Today is commonly Known as Halloween...it is a "knock-off" of the Celtic celebration of Samhain, The Feast Of The Dead.
The Deity was called Sammael-"The Dread Lord", a Semetic version of the Asiatic Sama, Samana, or Samavurti ( The Leveler), Judge of the Dead, who is identified with the Underworld King Yama
. The Sama Veda
(Hindu) called him a storm god, clothed in black clouds. Like his later incarnation -Satan_, he was Prince of the Air; also the Celtic god Samhain, the feast of the dead which was Christianized as All Souls. Medieval Gnostics were accused of worshiping him as Sammael
The Britains had a feminine counter part, Samothea
(Death Goddess), queen of the mysterious land of the Hyperboreans, where Pythagoras traveled to learn the arts of letters, astronomy, and science from this all-wise lady. She seems to have been another form of Skadi
The Celtics also honored "The Apple Woman" on this day, who was the goddess of both life and death. She gave away magical apples which were laced either with a benevolent enchantment or a malevolent poison. The evolution of "Trick or Treat" was said to come from the Apple Woman celebration. According to Celtic Texts, the Apple Woman lived in a beautiful secluded forest by a sacred river, and this may also be whence we derive the apple as a forbidden fruit (garden of eden) which bestows life or death, for nowhere in the Bible is the apple mentioned as being the food of which Adam and Eve ate.
Pope Gregory (5 AD) declared November 1st to be All Saint's Day, hoping to obscure pagan rites into Christian affiliation. However, Hallowe'en and All Saint's have and/ or are also known in diverse cultures as: All Hallowmass, All Soul's Day, Mallowmas, The Druidic feast of the Spirits of the Air, The Day of the Dead (Mexico and South America), Rite of Hella (Scandinavia), and Isia or Helaria (Egyptian recovery from death and rebirth of Osiris).
There is also some evidence that originally it was in remembrance of a great cataclysm that occurred millennia ago, thus another correspondence to Death, Judgment Day, souls and communication with the dead. Displayed, are The Devil, The Eon,The Adjustment, and the Death card of the Thoth deck tarot. Each of them relate to each other and to the celebration that today we call Hallowe'en. If you remember my past blogs, you will know how they correspond with the holiday and each other. If you haven't read my blogs, then you have some scrolling back to do.
