The Hebrew Story Letters of the Tarot: Ayin

Ayin: Eye---Key 15-The Devil

Illustrated Hebrew Letter Card by: Ask the Kabala-oracle cards . Authors: Deepak Chopra & Michael "Zappy" Zapolin with Alys R. Yablon

Tarot Card: Thoth Deck

The Story of Ayin comes from Akedat Yitzchak ( The Binding of Isaac):  Then Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, 'Father...' And he said,'Here I am my son.' And he said,'Here are the fire and the wood but where is the lamb for the offering?' And Abraham said, 'God will seek out for Himself the lamb for the offering my son.' And the two of them went together. They arrived at the place of which God had spoken to him: Abraham built the altar there, and arranged the wood: he bound Isaac, his son , and he placed him on the altar atop the wood.
                                       Genesis 22:7-9
The story of the binding of Isaac has raised much controversy about Abraham; his morality; his faith and has even question his sanity. But this story is really about the faith of two men. Isaac was 37 years old at this time, Abraham was over 100yrs old and yet Isaac, seeing that he was to be the  lamb-sacrifice didn't resist and let himself be bound.
  • He was 37 and could easily have resisted a 137yr old man. Yet his faith in God, allowed him to know that he was being tested as well and that only good comes from faith/trust in God. Abraham's faith is different, he didn't believe God would stop his knife from killing his son, rather he just obeyed. He was a man who would willingly do anything and everything for his God. We know that both Abraham and Isaac saw the cloud that signaled God's presence while the two servants did not; signifying that both father and son were faithful and had "the sight" to see God. Isaac knew what was going to happen because he "had the sight" and knew that his sacrifice would be interrupted by God and not carried out. Years later, Isaac, the father of "the sight" goes blind, signifying that the physical sight is not as important as the inner sight of the "third eye". You'll see that "eye" on the Goats forehead on the Tarot card and as the main image of the Oracle card.

The Devil may be the most difficult image for western peoples to understand. It is rooted in "bogey-man" meanings but in Qaballah, The Devil , is not an evil entity having its own existence as a "demi-god" . It represents the special mystery of the "trickster" of our own physical mind, that must be penetrated before we can directly know the Higher Principle of the Self. It could be called the "Animal Mind of Earth" which is not evil but is based on survival thinking that requires "enemies" (good and bad things) so it can protect itself by deceiving others and in so doing deceives itself! The physical personality and the Spirit Personality are to be combined in a special communion, in order to build a limited expression of the Unlimited Self. We weave illusion, (thought) into forms, where as, the Universal Self weaves knowledge into Personality. Knowledge is wordless...it is image in action. While words are "thought forms" that require no knowledge beyond body self-awareness. That awareness is based on fear of death (fear of pain is an offshoot of this.) Yet the Spirit is Eternal, and its creation is based on Eternal-Self-Awareness whose base is "I AM" ! In other words, Love of Being! The two different worlds of both sides of the "mirror" of matter. The Self-reflected side and the One whocreates reflection side of the mirror of Light. Like I have said, this is a difficult understanding to achieve, but one that must be achieved by not only thought but the release of thought in order to become intuitive action, which is necessary to become a Qabalist. We must have developed the Third Eye sight, that sees the ideas of the Spiritual Self that are on the "other side of the mirror" of self-reflection. The sight of Isaac, must be developed in order to read the Tarot Cards well Otherwise, the reader reads them by wrote, as Abraham would and would fail to understand the Real- images generated by the Spiritual Self. Reality is individually made, while the Real is Spiritually made! The difference can be "Seen" beyond the reality that our "Trickster" has invented for us. Often, that trickster is our very own personality, which is based on good-bad; right-wrong, and the morals of the survival mind. We delude our eyes with such images. The "eye" is not deluded, it differentiates reality from the Real. It knows reality is a woven illusions based on an individuals reaction to environment, cultural training, etc. and knows the Spiritual Personality that has built you for the Purpose of Energy-in expression as "I AM Me". Understanding this card will challenge you,; often as much as Abraham was challenged. So I suggest diligent effort in understanding your illusions; especially believing that you are inferior to another because of "titles" or physical strength. Above all things know thyself!
