The High Priestess of the Thoth Deck, is to me the truest representation of any Tarot deck . She is the Root matter of the universe and is always linked with the Magus who represents the First matter. The distinction ow which may seem subtle, however, She is the Uniting Intelligence, while the Magus is called the Intelligence of Transparency.
The High priest is associated with the Moon, for she is both veiled in light which conceals
Her Darkness. This card shows both the Indigo/blue and the veil of light is wave like flow. She is the essence of the Unconscious. what Carl Jung called the virgin anima which is related to the Alchemy symbolism, the virgins milk which is fed to the Philosophers Stone ; the life giving force of the unconscious. She is the first principle of the Feminine on the Tree of life and in Mythology is often refereed to as one of the Moon Deities, Hecate, Diana-Artemis, or Hecate-Selene [the far shooting moon] which is another aspect of Artemis. Thus the bow and arrow is shown on Her lap.
Now we know that mythology has grown out of the social needs to understand the "powers that be" and that Goddesses and Gods are purely personifications of Intelligent Forces. The High Priestess represents the "triple goddess", which is shown in the Thoth Deck as the High Priestess, key 2, the Empress-key 3 and the Temperance/Art key 14 which is the lower extension of the High Priestess. Since Artemis was know as the "maiden of the silver bow" and the High Priestess is also called the "Princess of the Silver Star", suggests Sagittarius the Archer whose arrow may fly to heaven or deeply into the earth. The Moon Goddess, is often called Maid-Mother-and Crone (full Moon, waxing and waning moon). She is all phases of Woman at once and can go from Virgin, to Mother to Crone and back to Virgin again----as does the Moon go from Full, to waxing and then to waning----back to full moon once again. The High Priestess is the reconciler of opposites---the uniting intelligence. She is the number 2 which is the number of reflection and duplication. She acts on the First matter of the Magus, and causes it to function in the pattern of the lemniscus; the figure eight laying on its side where one cycle is opposed and duplicated while the flow is totally unified. When the veil of Light is removed, The High Priestess is without illusion, without a mask and is the cold clear intelligence and the Fiery Darkness of True Spirit is revealed. The mysteries, tell us that light doesn't reveal, it conceals by its very brilliance and that in order to understand the Supreme Spirit Identity, we must face the crystalline reality of our freedom of choice. This facing, has been called the "Dark Night of the Soul" which was coined by a sixteenth century monk, St. John of the Cross. There is much information and disinformation about this event, where we face the desolation and terror as one is on the middle path towards truth but has not reached the end. So I caution the investigative student who might think that the "Dark Night" is a moment of depression. It is far more severe and terrifying than just having a cycle of missed expectations and assumptions. The High Priestess, removes all falsehood, from the Soul and most of us "are just a story we tell ourselves" and are the True Novel of Self that is written by the Supreme Spirit Identity. The High Priestess is called the path of Gimel, of which I have written extensively in a previous blog. To understand this card, I would recommend in depth study of the "Triple Goddess" concepts of mythology. She is the underlining cause of the vibratory patterns of the universe----and all of us are patterns of vibration! There is much to learn here.
