The Fives often bring trepidation among the both readers of tarot and their clients, but in truth they represent motion coming to the aid of matter. They are storm and stress that result in the complete upset of the statically stabilized system, simply because things in stasis don't evolve. So these fives aren't regarded as "evil" but rather as a reluctance to get up and leave comfort zones and get on with the "job".
To the Adepts of the White School of Tarot, (Great White Brotherhood) every phenomena is a sacrament, as "what exists is supposed to exist"...by Divine decree. Divine-Creation, doesn't build what it doesn't want. So, the Five of Wands is called Strife, it is a disturbance, caused by the Fiery nature of Spirit----where the "inner motion" disturbs the stasis of the "outer" being.
The Five of Cups is called Disappointment because the Water of Pleasure is placid and is very unlike Fire, which delights in superabundant energy where as,Water represent emotion, and placid emotions are often called Peace. Disturbance, in placidity is necessary to "expand and liberate" the personality from it's self imposed emotional limits. However, the placid, rearguard disturbance as misfortune.
The Five of Swords-Defeat, is also a troubling one. The Emotional power to control the many levels of consciousness, where the "As above" is manifested in the "As below" has become weakened, and the Four of Swords-Truce falls into division. The Universal Unconscious, the Spiritual Conscious, the Personality and the sub-conscious of the body are now at odds. The flow of Powerful Consciousness, is now defeated by confusion and a quarrel has broken out. This is Defeat, because the original idea of the Swords was a manifestation that came from the love between the Wand (Father Fire) and the Cup (Mother Water). thus the Passionate Union of Goddess-God has produced the Conscious Energy, (Swords), as their birthed Child. The "Big Bang" produced Conscious Energy and the I AM (God-Goddess) is the Union of idea and form! So the Defeat of the Five of Swords, suggests that body and mind are not getting along, new concepts of united effort must be considered.
The Five of Disks, is called Worry, and is equally troublesome, as it implies Worrying, as in "dogs worrying sheep", a type of strangling feeling. This is where the stability of the Four-Power, has broken down and our own thoughts are strangling the body's very nature to preform. This is easily seen as disks, by their very nature, must spin, action must be applied, for them to be stable. So we can see the Five of Disks, as action and/or active life being strangled by worry.
The Fives do seem to emanate doom and gloom but in reality they are "Tough Love" from the Great Sword of Geburah (Severity) on the Tree of Live who is also in union with Chesed (Mercy). That union of Severity and Mercy, shows us that it is indeed Tough Love, that is causing our troubled times, for you would not be given challenges to your character if you weren't up to the task. Great Character, requires active participation in body operation from all levels of Conscious. Each one of us is seen as The Divine Child---The Christ---and when we don't see our Divinity-----God-Goddess take the time to remind us, and because of this Merciful participation in our lives, we rise from the dead past into a new now.. That is tough Love and I thank Her for it every day! She hasn't ever given up on me, even when I have given up on myself! The Fives, speak of a Great Love rather than a Great doom.
