The Thoth Deck-Key 6-The Lovers, is claimed by Qabalists to be the most obscure of the Major Arcana. Every symbol on this card is of a double meaning; hermaphroditic, marriages, communions, etc. . Most fitting, since Key-6, The Lovers, is ruled by Mercury in Gemini, the Twins of the zodiac. To obscure the meaning a little more, the Hebrew letter representing The Lovers is Zain, meaning Sword. Knowing this, Lady Freda Harris, designed this card's framework as Royals being married under the Royal Arch of Swords; Swords are a Suit acquainted with the intellectual world of analysis and as a primary agent of division.
The Lovers, is the first card in the Major Arcana (Arcana, means secrets or mystery) in which more than one figure appears and thus it is the story of creation.
Obviously the subject of this card is analysis, closely followed by Synthesis. For example, in Science,, the first question is usually, "of what are things composed?' , When answered, the next question will be,"How shall we recombine them to our advantage?" This happens to also be the policy of Tarot.
Cain and Able are the Twins, which is a long and complicated story derived from historical investigations by many ancient scholars. I would suggest reading A.Crowley's dissertation. Liber 418 which begins with the Ayssirian legend of a woman with a fish. Then there is the legend of Eve and the Serpent, for Cain was the child of Eve and the Serpent and not of Eve and Adam. The Fish represents the First Matter, and the Serpent represents the First Vibration. To explain this in a blog is rather like writing a book, so I'll refrain. Too make this Cain and Able symbolism horrifically simple:
The Child Cain, is a representation of the Soul who slays its own bodies for the organic organism of earth (agriculture) may continue (a necessary recycling of matter). This is represented in the card as the Dark Energy Child-Cain with Thor's hammer ( shown as a club, with which he killed Able) in his right hand. In the original Card, Cain held his left hand out in the sign of innocence which symbolizes lack of wrong doing. In the revised Thoth Deck card, Caine holds his Father's Lance (Phallic symbol). Then there is the cupid arrow shot in the Breast of Able, showing in a somewhat obscure way, love between the Twins. As you can see, this card requires diligent study and research to enable understanding.
The hooded figure occupying the center of The Lovers card, represents the Hermit, which is another form of the god Mercury, Key 9. He is shrouded to imply that he exists beyond the realm of intellect and manifestation. This shrouded Mercury, is standing in the sign of the Enterer, and about his arms is a scroll, symbolizing his essence and message. The sign of The Enterer is also a sign of Benediction, thus his action in the card is the Consecration of the Hermetic Marriage. Images of Eve, Lilith and Cupid are behind the Shrouded figure of Mercury which are in keeping with the Original card as explained in Libre 418. I've also shown a Hindu depiction of the Divine Marriage because it also requires an in depth study of its symbolism that is entirely in sync with the Tarot Thoth Deck Card.....but this is as far as I am going to go with this Occult card today, as I will faithfully continue in part 2 of the Thoth Deck Key6- The Lovers.
