In the Thoth Deck, the Kings are Knights. The Spiral Tarot, of Kay Steventon has kept to the older style KING of SWORDS.
To reiterate, A. Crowley believed that since the King of any suit was an Active force rather than a Passive force, that they should be depicted as Battle Kings in full armor or KNIGHTS. Sitting on thrones showed only passivity and not the true motion of this Fiery Force.
The Knight or King of Swords is called "the fiery part of Air" which may confuse you, but really he represents the violent power of motion applied to air. In other words "The Ambitious Mind". He rules from the 21st degree of Taurus to the 20th degree of Gemini. The Thoth King/Knight is a helmeted warrior whose helmet bares a rotating wing and is mounted on a rampaging steed. With both sword and poniard in hand, he is the very idea of Attack. He is the Spirit of the Tempest.
That Spirit of Tempest motif is also shown in the Spiral Tarot KING OF SWORDS, as the crowned ruler is surrounded in whirling air. The Alchemical sign of Air is also present on this card, indicating its ruling element.
The scepter in his right hand is the ruling eagle globe design of the medieval kings and he is holding his sword up and in front as if in defense.
The King or Knight of Swords represents an Archetypical personality who is a person that:

The Will of Taurus and the Inspiration of Gemini are applied here. The Knight of Swords represents the True Will (Spirit) exploding the mind spontaneously. What many of us forget or have been indoctrinated to forget is that True Will is not empathetic---Spirit /Mind has no need for empathy, as it never Dies and the Love of Idea is its motion. Those of us Spirit-personalities, who are fortunate enough to inherit a human body in many "lifetimes", now know how to empathize with the "living" and will adjust our ideas to accommodate the expansion and liberation of the living from their poverty of self imposed- definitions; rather than just erase them as Tempest of immense violence. Love of idea without empathy is a Terrible Tempest of Self-Absorbed Desire, where the Vision is more important than the living. this Card reminds us to take time to love being, for the body human is a Vision of Divine Will-To-Be and must be our Vision Center, so that we can "feel" the violence of our own Ideas, and restructure them to care for the living rather than crucify them on the unforgiving hardness of our ideas.
