THE SEVEN OF CUPS: The Spiral Tarot and Thoth Tarot Card Comparisons.

7 of Cups-Debauch

Both the Spiral Tarot and Thoth Tarot, represents emotional over extension where depression is causing us to over-indulge in certain habits to avoid pain. This card indicates that imagination is running away with itself and we have a problem with facing reality. There is also an suggestion here that there is a tendency for us to emotionally wallow in negative emotions of the past rather than changing our moods to live in the now of reality.

Overindulgence in food, drink, drugs, smoking, gambling, sexual antics, even shopping ...all from a tendency to feel sorry for ourselves. In other words, the seven of cups -represents a self destructive way of coping with depression, or uncomfortable issues that one doesn't want to face by indulging in distracting patterns of excessive behavior.

The Spiral Tarot, 7 of Cups illustrates a woman standing in the rain and who cannot see the standing cups, nor their content through the mist. There is an implication here of being blinded by ones own cloudy emotions, making reality difficult to see. The rain, implies not only the element of the card, Water, but also the internal crying that goes on when one is emotionally locked in the past.

The astrological symbol of this card is Venus in Scorpio; Venus represents love and beauty while Scorpio represents transformation and deep-emotional exploration. This suggests that a choice has to be made with much care and consideration during a time of run-away imagination and innumerable thoughts. This confusion is only enhanced by the abundant creativity, artistic talent and energy of the querent.

For personal performance, the 7 of Cups represents one of the worst ideas one can have; it poisons the mind and madness assaults the emotions. It represents Delirium Tremens and drug addiction, as one sinks into the mire of false pleasure. Fear of pain, is the foundation of such nightmare where the personality is the disease and the only cure is a new personality construct... by "old self" destruction.

There is something almost suicidal  in this card, as there are no strong planetary influences to balance it. Venus is assaulting Venus and Earth is a "scorpion morass" (A. Crowley), the lowest form of Scorpio which is quite a fall from the Eagle-Sun of the Six.
The illusion of suffering is so deep here, it is like a smothering swamp with no horizon.

When the 7 of Cups card is thrown, it indicates that in:
  • The next 7 weeks or 7 months, you are willing to move through indulgent or addictive patterns. This is shown by the number 7, which represents the Charioteer, that is the principle of change and movement.
  •  This case the number 7  indicates an inner spiritual/emotional support to assist you in your movement through depression and debauch patterns.
  • This card is about motion-emotion in fact, and it shows emotion be expressed in negative ways, rather than facing our feelings and solving them in positive non victim ways.
  • The 7 of cups, suggest a willingness to change and move on but some confusion on how to go about it without undue pain.
  • You may also be experiencing negative emotions from the past; 7 years ago or when you were  7 , during some relationship crisis or family crisis.
  • This card suggests that you may want to move on and that you are no longer willing to carry the emotional burdens of the past family debauch or indulgent patterns of the past.
  • This also indicates that you may no longer tolerate the debauch patterns of others in your life or the indulgent dynamics of the Scorpio people in your life (October 21 to November 21).  The Seven of Cups reminds us to , "get over yourself and get on with you, impeccability is what we do"! In other words, be more magick and less tragic.
  • Thank you for your interest, support and comments.

Great interpretation of the card, and how cool is it that I found this particular one using the two decks I use most? Did a reading for myself using the Spiral and the image really got to me. My mind immediately goes to the Lord of Debauch Thoth interpretation, and here you are with this great information to fill out my reading. In particular, I am a Venus in Scorpio, and I'm moving out of addiction to alcohol (92 days clean). Really trying to transmute the energy of Scorpio, and this card is telling me to wait......and I'm negotiating.

Hi Shanon. Thank you for your comments. Glad to see you have stepped out of the Swamp of "yesterday's". Congrats on your sobriety, The Spirit is the "I" and the "Will", the mind is the " Am" and the body is the "me". When the Will of Spirit takes over, the other two of "self" fall into line. You are doing a good job of harmonizing the "three that is thee". Remember, all of us are a copy of the Supernal Triangle on the Tree of life, therefore, we to are a triangle of Spirit, Mind and Body. Good work! May you live long and prosper.
