TAROT CARD COMPARISONS: The Elemental Tarot 3 of Fire/ Beacon and the Thoth Tarot 3 of Wands/Virtue

In the Suit of Fire, the Thoth Three of Wands is Springtime.....thus the flowering lotus wands are shown. The Sun is exalted in Aries and the number 3 is Binah (Understanding) on the Tree of Life which means that the Sun has rekindled the Great Mother.

In the Three of Wands, Primal Energy is established, as the Will (Spirit) has been transferred to the Great Mother, who prepares, conceives, and gives birth to the Will as manifestation.
Since the Sun is at its zenith in Aries, there is a caution of overdoing it ...too much Sun can kill.

There is an underlying admonishment suggested in this card, one must seek patience and perseverance or succumb to over weaning ambition. With this much force focused on the personality, Virtue is indeed a... virtue.

In the case of the Three of Wands, Virtue is "always being true to one's Self" which means don't violate yourself for any reason. Since I know that everyone I see is another way to be me, I understand that by thinking ill of or mistreating others in anyway, I violate my own body's balance, as it must enact my emotional-energetic- thought. Emotional thought, is ambitious thought and with this much fiery motion (e-motion) thoughts seek ambitiously to bloom! Thoughts must be well guarded before they are let out of the "pen" of the brain; be not afraid to examine the seed before you cast it!

In the Thoth Card the Sun is full-out and Shinning behind the three wands, therefore a great emotional period of powerful energy is upon the querent, who must be Virtuous at all times,"or be slain by the Arrows of Apollo".

This is also full on sexual (Spiritual) energy, and can be quite a rush towards creation! But again, be Virtuous or "all hell will brake loose". Now don't get me wrong, this is not about Chasity, this is about the type of energetic manifestation of the Solar Phallus, that Tantric practitioners seek to experience, as it enlivens the dormant seeds of greater self, just as spring does to the dormant seeds of winter. But this can become uncontrollable to the untrained personality, so take great care with great energy.
In  the Three of Wands, the Fiery Spirit is focusing on the Querent and great things can be done. There is realization of hope, completion of labor,  and success in the struggle. There is also an Establishment of force, strength,  and even Pride with wealth, power, maybe a little conceit....which can become greatly conceited in a flash!
There is a gift of great Energetic Will here, but be cautious, for if one is lacking in focused control while driving a 70 horse-powered car, there is often room for recovery; However, if the car is of 400 horse-power, and the driver lacks focus, you will be lucky to live through the accident. This card, the Three of Wands, is of at least 1000 horse-power, the "driver" must focus all their skill here.

By now, you know that Binah is an aspect of your own Energetic Unconscious, The prefix Un tends to make one think of something "less than" consciousness. Nothing can be farther from the Truth! Here Un just designates the Unseen.  Being Un-seen does not mean less in anyway, anymore than unseen H-bombs are less powerful than the one on your doorstep.

Consciousness, itself, is a child of the Collective Unconscious of the Universe, and that Mother of consciousness, is Binah.  In the Great Sea of Imagination, your image floats in the amniotic fluid of "will to form". Binah is the Great Will of the Sea of Unconscious.
The Texts of the Golden Dawn said it best:
" In Binah is a thick darkness which yet veileth the Divine Glory in which all colors are hidden, wherein mystery and depth and silence, and yet, it is the habitation of the Supernal Light. There The Supernal Triad complete. And the Sphere of its Operation is Shabbathi, or rest, and it giveth forms and similitudes unto chaotic matter and it ruleth the sphere of action of the planet Saturn. And Jehovah Elohim is the perfection of Creation and Life of the World to Come.  And the Archangel is Tzaphqiel,  the Prince of the Spiritual Strife against Evil and the name of the Angels is Arahim, the strong and mighty Ones who are also called the Order of Thrones."

"The order of Thrones" are represented as the Four Queens of the Tarot. who are united with the Four Kings. ..Their Husbands.

Generally, the four Threes, represent  the realization of the Action (conception) of the Prince having been conceived  Symbolized  as the central figure on each card. Action is definitely launched for good or evil.

Thus in the Three of Wands, the Prince of Wands conception is shown as central flames radiating outward form the Supernal Union of the Triad.

THE THREE OF WANDS-VIRTUE, is also called the Lord of Established Strength. Well noted, as the Sun is in Aries here. There is great power where the Sun illuminates Aries, the Cardinal Sign of Fire often called Mars.
The Three of Wands also represents Binah's influencing the World of Pure Spirit (Atziluth).
Here the Three crossed Wands indicate the balance of Chokmah, Binah and the birth of Tiphareth, the Sun (son), and/or The Prince.  Growth begins and is shown on the card as the unfolding lotus blossoms opening to the Warm and Bright Energy of Aries.  To be more mundane, but not less accurate, the Three of Wands represents the perfect communion of the ternary I AM ME!
To an astrologer, the entry of the Sun into the sign of Aries, heralds spring.
Thus the blazing colors of the Card show great strength for individual expression (central Wand). Here also is absolute power that can corrupt absolutely, thus egocentricity, pride and conceit are lurking dangers. Yet we have Virtue here, the key to Spiritual integrity and honesty.

The Elemental Tarot choose to illustrate the Suns elemental power as a blazing, warm season of spring. Here a young woman, hands raised to the Sun, becomes the sun as the radiant rays of the sun become her hair. She is wearing a "three piece" suit, of three red triangles, suggesting the element of fire for this card.  Below on the ground, are shown two sunflowers, showing the fertile nature of the glowing sun.
The mountains in the background, support tall, swaying palm trees which also support the concept of fertility and fruitfulness.
The Word Shamash, on the bottom of the card is an ancient Sumerian/Mesopotamian name for the sun god.
Again, the authors of these cards, Caroline Smith and John Astrop, choose to join a planet with a planet as a unique astrological interpretation of this card; Sun/Jupiter the signs of which are on the upper left hand corner. The implication here, is that this promotes the content of joy, health and recognition. The Thoth Card places the Sun in Aries, which is a true zodiacal/ astrological application and implies season of Spring, as that is when the Sun is in the house of Aries.
The lower right corner, illustrates the Egyptian hieroglyphs that support the meaning of this card.
The symbols for the number three, are in the upper right hand corner of the bright and sunny card.

When the Three of Wands -Virtue, or The Elemental Tarot 3 of Fire/ Beacon is thrown during a reading:

  •  The querent is experiencing the conjoining of Body, Mind and Spirit.
  •  Putting thoughts into action.
  • Keeping on with present activities for they are conceived and will soon flourish into manifestation.
  • Clarity, where you are seeing yourself honestly.
  • Established strength in enterprises where collaboration will favor the querent.
  • Radiating intention, understanding the Will of Fire and increasing energy to birth ideas.
  • Being true to yourself, not compromising what has true meaning to you.
This is a very active card of powerful supernal direction, so it requires us to understand that Virtue is not chastity; no nothing so obviously prejudicial, but rather "Always being True to Thine own self." Here there is a warning not to compromise your passion for others.
Be as Spring and flower in your own inner fire! Clarify your identity and " Above all things, Know thyself!"
