Tarot Card Comparisons: The Thoth 7 of Wands-Valour & The Babylonian Tarot 7 of Wands- Courage

The Tarot of EliThe Thoth, Seven Of Wands: Valor:
This card represents: the unbalancing of a previous spiritual victory, by the dynamic flow of transformational energy all around us; things change. Just when we thought we were victorious over the emotional, spiritual and physical resistance to our vision some issues change and we have to exercise bravery, and valor to not doubt ourselves or our vision. This departure from balance tends to direct us to loss of confidence; However, if we hold to our vision and trust our inner integrity, we shall still achieve our goal and also learn discrimination in the process.

The Thoth 7 of Wands Card is Astrologically, Mars in Leo. Mars represents a dynamic vitality, an agitation of motion while Leo represents creativity and/or creative expression. This suggest that you don't try to stop the new motion in your life but instead become creative in channeling it towards your vision without compromising or settling for less.

  1. The central wand is the inner self trust gained by experience.
  2. The lotus wand  represents the unfolding of your vision if you show the valor necessary to carry on and not be deterred by conflict.
  3. The Ibis headed wands represent the new directions that allow you to move in new regenerative ways that you value.
  4. By showing valor in the face of adversity, you will be able to see things more clearly and be able to honor your vision and creativity which is represented by the winged Eye of Horus wands (a symbol of the All Seeing Eye).

The Qabalistic Thoth 7 of Wands represents Netzach ( 7th Sephira-Victory) in the Suit of Fire, which seems strong enough, except that in the Seven of Wands, the Power of Netzach is in Aziluth, the realm of pure spirit; this is astrologically defined as the Lord of Valour, known as Mars in Leo.  However, Netsach is the 7th Sephiroth, assigned to the formative astral, in Yetzirah. Therefore all the activity is lower down in the realm of Assiah, our physical world of transitional elements, slowing down and weakening spiritual influence.

Therefore, the position of Mars in Leo maybe one of strength and courage and of a " Fiery clash", as here we have exalted the "God of War"; However, Valour implies, the armies are in chaos and personal physical courage needs to be applied to win the battle, so the fray is certain but victory is not.

The number 7 is a feminine number, and in this case applies a certain passivity to the Force of Mars, not much, but just enough to unbalance the energy. Mars is distracted by the beauty of Venus.

Netzach, is a Sephira of polarities, as it is on the Male pillar (right hand path) with Venus, a female god attached to it.  This gives Netzach the interplay of Mars and Venus. Thus the certain Victory of the 6, is now an uncertain Victory in the 7 of Wands. This unbalance is shown by the three Wands of the Adepts, being crossed by a crude club like wand, imply a lower state of energy, and the balanced flames of the Six thrown into chaos.

This feminine element of Valour is depicted on the Babylonian Tarot, 7 of Wands/Courage.
Depicted on this card, is the goddess Ishtar (Inanna), descending naked, without her power, into the underworld of the dead that is ruled by her dark sister Ereshkigal. Ishtar had "all the knowledge of heaven" but not of the underworld, so determined to learn it, she courageously gave up everything that protected her, to learn.
Since none of the living may enter this Underworld, Ishtar threatened the gate keeper by declaring she would make the dead outnumber the living if she wasn't allowed in. He "freaked out" and let her in.

Having been let in, Ishtar proceeded through 7 gates to confront her dark sister. However, at each gate she had to give up some of her clothing, jewels, amulets etc.  After entering the 7th gate, Ishtar was naked, and confronted her Sister Ereshkigal, who had her immediately killed.
Like the Greek goddess Persephone, who enters the underworld of Hades every winter, Ishtar's death, caused all fertility to cease; no plants can blossom, no animal can give birth.

Ereshkigal's violent action, distressed the gods who then appointed the wise god Ea, to solve the situation. Ea, sends an envoy with the waters of life (Astral fluids), to restore Ishtar to life and secure her release. Ereshkigal demands a replacement to take the place of Ishtar before she would be released from the underworld.  Ishtar chose her lover, Tammuz, who showed no emotion after her death. This seemed to hold a lesson for the cheating or unfaithful man in Babylonian society; the dummy Tammuz would have been fine, if he just put a rose on a grave in her name, but instead he went on as if nothing happened..."beware the wrath of a jilted woman", is still a well known "visit to the underworld" today!

The moral of the story aside,  Ishtar is depicted as naked woman who courageously walks down the stairway into Ereshkigal's dark and dead littered throne room, showing great personal valor.

Six crossed but unbalanced wands are shown in the upper left while the seventh lion headed wand is shown apart from the six. This indicates that in times of trials, one is often alone. Beneath Ishtar, is the cuneiform symbol for seven.

Now we of the Qabalah know that "the gods" are the Creations of the Created. They are not emanations of Eheieh, the One and eternal Intelligent Energy. Rather, they are creations of the Group Mind of the Races. These "gods" are therefore potent forces formed in our own image...they are us and after many thousand years of worship, have become "patterns of coded energy" or what I like to call, Psychic engines. If you know the code, you may access the stored data and energy, as it sits on the Astral levels awaiting those who have learned the codes.

We are the "Above and the Below" of the Emerald Tablet and/ or Demiurges who must "know ourselves" to claim our Universal Inheritance. We are at once the many and the One. Each of us is a Transformational identity of the One Energy, therefore Each of us is everywhere at once and nowhere at the same time. If it wasn't for the establishment of a point in time, which is an entity that I or we call "Me", I wouldn't have a sense of presence! I Am  Me, made of a family of Potent Forces, that are called gods by some, The Universal Collective Unconscious called Psyche by others, and/or the Intelligent Forces of Physics. What stands out is that I am a wyrding of Forces (old English-To weave) a Weaving, into a tapestry of potent function that I call "I AM ME'! I am both the Transmitter and the Transmitted, and the Radio that picks it up and gives it a presence at this Time/space dimension (and the other Ten on the Tree also have a "point in time"). My potency depends on my "self-awareness"...my perspective of Self. Gods, are such a perspective.
EVERY THOUGHT I THINK BECOMES A SELF-IDENTITY (Am) AND WITH A BODY, MUST be EXPERIENCE as Me!

Therefore, those who know this, don't believe everything they think. They examine the thought and think to themselves,"do I want to be this"? Unless I learns to discriminate what is Am, Me becomes of howling hell of clashing self identities, each trying to be "king of the Mountain"!

In this clash of forces, the armies are in chaos and only the crude Valor (Valour) of  an individual effort will carry the day. This tells one that ."Sure, you may carry the day, but only by a impeccable effort of will that ignores pain"; that impeccable effort of Will" is I AM Valor!

So, when all is said and done, the throwing of this card during a reading states:
  • That within 7 day's or 7 weeks, the querent will need to display personal valor to achieve success, as there will be opposition obstacles, difficulties, and quarreling.
  •  With Mars in Leo, the querent will also have the courage to meet them.
  • Victory is always possible if we have the courage and proper energy excised to meet ignorance, pretense, wrangling, and threat, face to face.
  •  Depending on the dignity of the cards, ill or well, victory may just be in small and unimportant things and influence over a subordinate.
  • A rough way to view this 7 of Wands-Valour (old spelling) Just grab your flaming club and charge.......you'll succeed without dying, but you may bleed a little.
  • That in the next 7 weeks or 7 months it is important that you have the courage and valor to stay with what you value, especially with the Leo people in your life ( July 21 to August 21).
  • It is important that you stay by what you value concerning work, career and/or creative expression by not compromising or settling for less. Stick to your guns-so to speak.
  • Trust yourself and your valued experiences.
