Tarot Card Comparisons: The Thoth 3 of Swords- Sorrow & The Babylonian Tarot 3 of Arrows- Sorrow

The Tarot of EliThe Four Threes of Qabalistic Thoth Tarot, are associated with Binah who is the Great Mother and is called UNDERSTANDING. In Understanding, the idea becomes fertilized and a child can be born. The formulation of the Triangle, (Kether-Crown, Chokma-Wisdom & Binah-Understanding) is a stability that cannot be made unstable. We know the Triangle that begins all birth as many combinations of 3. For instance, Maid-Mother-and Crone, each a special perspective on the Female triangle of Womb-rite, or Father-Son- and Holy Ghost, each a active part of the stable foundation of "the Spirit Fire" or rite of Phallus. Then there is  Ocean-Rain-and River, each a process of Life or Ocean-Sun-and Earth.  While the mind is made up of the Spirit Mind of the Universal Collective Unconscious, subconscious (body) and conscious, We can go on and on but in all cases a fertilization is achieved and a child can be born.

The Thoth Three of Wands is called Virtue, and/or The Lord of Virtue (Husbandry) , for in this state of conscious energy, the idea of will and dominion has become interpreted in Character.

The Thoth Three of Cups is called Abundance and/or the Lord of Abundance where the idea of Love has come to fruition. The Threes are far enough down the Tree of Life to begin seeing definite differentiation between the suits, giving birth to the idea of division----so that "many can be made From the One who is Three".

The idea of division, of mutability, which is the "airy" quality of things, is made manifest in the Three of Swords.

The Three of Swords is named SORROW; not the vulgar sorrow of individual discontent or disappointment but the Sorrow of the Dark Binah, and of the Dark Isis, who must destroy what she creates.

In German this great divine sorrow is called Weltschmerz, the universal sorrow. It is the Divine quality of Melancholy. I find it easier to understand the Three of Swords by understanding the Great Mother's sorrow over her seeing the Bright Shimmering Beauty of Her Children, born of Her own Imagination and yet because of the loving trust of "freedom of choice", unable to intervene when watching her children become ugly in their own minds as they identify themselves as monsters. All of Which happens when fear is the foundation of our ideas/identity rather than Love. Then there is the Divine Melancholy, for all that is created must be destroyed; something any creator of beautiful things, who watches them "fall apart" must feel.

The Three of Disks (Pentacles) exhibits the crystallization of forces, which is the idea of Earth. There is an obvious manifestation of Work having been done. This is also often called the Great Work and/or Life creating the Alive.

The  Qabalisitic threes may make more sense to you if you remember that the"other-side of the Mirror", is the Dark Place where Life is the Supernal Triangle, the World of Atziluth, of the Tree of Life, and the Alive are the Child made manifest from this Union of Conscious Energy (Forces), that combine to make the Crystallization of Light,and/or what Life creates as a self image in the Reflective side of the Mirror!  This conceptualization of a two sided mirror is simple and yet goes far in explaining why "Mirror Magic" is so often used to insure manifestation of idea into a "living expression". Or one can say "from the warm, watery Darkness of the nurturing womb, Light is born and formed into image."

A lot has been said, but not many understand that the body is merely a Reflection, of your Dark side; the invisible you who is the energetic majority of You (you are 99.6% invisible). It is in the Dark, warmth, of your "infinite unseeable light" (Spirit) that all Life comes from. The body is Alive, but in itself, it is not Life, as the Greater Self is the swirling Breath of Life that is in it!

As stated, the body is a Reflection of Life. Therefore one must think well from one's deep dark places, to be Alive and Well! It pays to remember this axiom,"Do unto another as you would have done to you."...for that is in itself a Triangle of three---Idea, Cause and effect. It is unbreakable in its stability. So it pays to know what your ideas create. If you identify "others" (enemy or not enemy) instead of "Another" (everyone I see is another way to be me) you will keep lessening yourself until your life force can no longer sustain the body health and balance. To think less of others, is to lessen your self and this generates a deep sorrow in your soul.
Therefore understand that your thoughts, ideas, and opinions only effect the cause that is "Me". Your Reflection, enacts your Deep thoughts, into "aliveness". Your body, the youngest part of the Spiral Entity that is I AM,  is the only one who feels your thoughts and then must enact them as a "Me". We are not responsible for how "others" react to us. We are, however, the alive response of reaction to our own thought!

Love, is smart as it is both wise and understanding (Chokmah and Binah)---not the act of a simpleton but of a Powerful Spirit. To Love Being----is to Be love and to Be sorrow. For entropy which is the 2nd law of physics (thermodynamics) proceeds to disorganize what has been organized: in other words, to  understand love is to not fear but to understand loss.
Others are just another way to be Divine Children; Children who have the Goddess given Freedom of Choice; gifted Divine Children, who have a right to their identities, be they ill or well thought out. Therefore, everyone I see is another way to be me; I have no need to be right, nor need to be wrong. For that 2 dimensional way of thinking only generates enemy (wrong/predator) or not enemy (agrees with me/prey). This is animal survival thinking, and not of the Higher Self who is infinite and forever creating itself as a universe of image.

The Magus knows, that to be able to "think" means you are not the effect called thought, but the Cause of it.  So my thoughts aren't "my precious", they are the effect that causes the "thought-collective" of idea, which then emotes to Alive motion, making the body a sacred place of motivated discernment, which is "my precious" point in time. I, who is a trinity of " I AM ME",  then has the Knowledge to make, and remake thought to  improve the function of my Soul, mind and body, and also all the "alive"  of creation!  I would rather be "always evolving" rather than think that I am the thought I think, and must defend those thoughts to the death. I know I am more than the sum of my thoughts. To think that the thinker of thought, is limited to thoughts "thunk" is ignorance. That is like saying, " the motion of the Ocean is limited to the swimming of fish".  The esoteric ocean that is Mind, is not limited to the thoughts it creates. This ignorance, of thought being more precious than created being, elevates  unproven idea above the proof of Alive ("Truth is made manifest") and therefore eliminating the Alive or at least enslaving the Alive, to unproven "visions/ideas". This is the reverse of reason, for  being Alive is how Life expands and liberates the manifested consciousness from self-imposed limits and how the Soul learns discernment! To make Thought Sensual, is to form a screening process for the purpose of Life expanding Self Awareness!

Because of this Life/Alive process each of us is now a creative Spirit (Life microwave spiral frequency) who can devote our though controlled "time/space" to expanding and liberating the Body-proving ground, from the survival thinking of the animal domain by making it "Me". This in turn expands and liberates self awareness! By the feelings of sensual Love, or sensual Fear generated by the Communion of idea with a sensing device, the soul /psyche has created a living laboratory. Now idea becomes experimentation where we can find the ideas that either free creation from the past (love) or bind it to the past (fear).

Idea is not enough to properly operate the Alive! Life depends on the Threesome of the Divine Wedding  which is the triangle made of Thought, the "first Matter" (Kether), the Union of Wisdom (Chokmah) and Understanding (Binah) to create the Beautiful Bright Child called "I AM Me" and/or the "invisible Child/Sephira" called Daäth-meaning- Knowledge!
When you understand the Threes, you begin to understand your Divinity!

The Thoth Three of Swords-Sorrow:
The Great Mother, Binah, rules the suit of Air in this card's imagery, Binah, the 3rd Sephiroth named Understanding, is not the beneficent Great Mother of the Trinity of Kether and Chokmah, but rather is seen here as the Dark Deep Sea of the "Abysmal Womb"; the Dark Unconscious. This doctrine of Sorrow, is a very difficult doctrine for the average student to grasp. Much study and skrying is recommended.

In the Zodiac, this card is Saturn in Libra which accentuates this darkness as Saturn is the dark and brooding planet, often associated with the element-Lead.

The Three of Swords represents the melancholy of the Universal Mind; the Womb of Chaos. Further understanding may come from analyzing the second law of thermodynamics which states"...Everything proceeds from order to disorder". Therefore, in this card, the Great Dark Sea of Mother is a brooding sorrow, for all Her bright beautiful children must end, as they are built of time, or have become monsters in there own misuse of identity and prematurely ended themselves.

This is a deep heartfelt universal sorrow that is not necessarily human even though it can be felt by humans.  We must remember, that contrary to our religious or cultural teachings, darkness is not a negative for Unlimited Light is darkness to us, as it has no end or beginning to observe. Therefore our True Identity is Dark-Light. Light in reflection, is visible to us as the "inner-reflection" gives us a beginning and end to see; a self-reflection that is thought, which an unlimited creator must have "to know itself" ; which is to Understand itself. Therefore, the limited light of self-reflection resides in the Dark Mind of the beholder... we also call this "freedom of choice", the ability to choose one's own identity and live it!

The Great Dark Womb, is a birth giver of limited light, the stuff that all form is made of and therefore the Dark Sea (See) of unlimited Imagination. To truly understand the Joy of the Greater Self, is to also know the Great Sorrow that limit imposes on us. To create is to destroy. To create what one loves, and watch it die, is one way to experience sorrow of the Divine.  In the realm of the physical world, life must eat itself to stay alive, which is another form of sorrow.

In the Thoth Deck Three of Swords, the sword of the Magus (Will communicated) with point uppermost, cuts the junction of the two curved swords. The Impact destroys the Rose, causing disorder which implies the supreme transcendence of natural order (...all things proceed from order to disorder).

The back ground of this Thoth Tarot card is a brewing storm of implacable light. A very deep and visceral understanding of this card's symbolism is necessary for one to become a Magi... as the foundation of this universe comes from the energy-in-motion generated by sorrow.  For in the beginning, there was only I and I realized it was the only One. It realized, " Am alone".  Therefore "I Am" (God's name)  was first existence conceived from the idea of loneliness/sorrow. I AM Me, is the first expression of Love.

The Babylonian Tarot, 3 of Arrows-Sorrow,
depicts a hapless lioness, struck by three down ward pointing arrows, a sign of misfortune.
The Lion hunt was often portrayed in Babylonian art as it was the sport of royalty.

With the introduction of animal husbandry and agriculture, mankind began the killing of animals that preyed on livestock. Lion hunting in particular became the "sport of kings", who believed that killing a lion proved their virility. This is also seen in today, as hunters mount heads of "trophy" animals, to prove how viral they are. What is unseen here, is that in order to need to prove virility, one must fear they are not, so they must hang a symbol of virility to  "cope" with their fear of vulnerability. Sorrowfully, killing to prove virility is often the product of fear; a "coping mechanism" that brings sorrow.
On the right of the card, just below the unfavorable downward pointing arrows, is the cuneiform symbol for the letter three.
When this card is thrown during a reading, it means that:
  • In three weeks or three months the querent shall experience unhappiness, sorrow, tears.
  • Disruption of plans, interruption, separation, quarreling, sowing of discord and strife, yet there will be mirth in evil pleasures, deceitful in words.
  • Depending on the dignity of the cards around it, it could also mean dishonesty in money transactions, selfish and dissipated, yet sometimes generous.
  • Depicts the sorrow felt by someone who goes against their greed, which they generally relish as a win.
  • Disruption, separation, quarreling, and interruption.
  • End of love.
  • Acceptance of one's pain.
  • Healing process is block by one's refusal to accept pain.
  • Wallowing in misery.
