The Thoth- QUEEN OF DISKS
Archetype Personality--Generous, fertile, opulent, compassionate, comfortable, supporting, Mastery of Reflection and nurturing.
In the zodiac, The Queen of Disks rules from 21 degrees Sagittarius to 20 degrees Capricorn ( the symbol of the goat on the card).
This Qabalistic Tarot card represents the function of Earth as Mother. Everything about her is abundant; affection, passivity, kindness, generosity, sensibility and practicality.
The illustrated card shows a Teutonic like image representing the Goddess Erda who was primary Muse and universal life giver to many primitive cultures in Europe.
As a persona
(from the Latin Personae, which means Mask
) the Queen of disks (Pentacles on Waite decks) represents a mature, dark woman who is practical and able to make specific forms out of potential substance. In other words, she is able to both nourish and define. She is the physical nutritionist. We must also remember that a personality is but a mask over the face of our Spirit. Which another Thoth Queen, Queen of Swords, points out as she holds a mask in her left hand.
Esoterically for the querent
, the Queen of Disks, suggests a high level of compassion, loving and nurturing the earth, and rejoicing in life. This card also suggests a gift from a rich relative and since it is a Threshold for birth
( giving substance to dreams) the Queen of Disks can also represent a happy marriage for a young man.
The Queen of Disks, is a personality grounded in mothering and the earth. She shows great harmony with the Physical World and health. This is a Wise Woman of Earth, who is very intelligent when it comes to physical things but can have difficulty arising above the material world.
There is great symbolism to this card:
- The dual meaning of the Serpentine Horns on her helm that represent the Horns of Hathor (Egyptian Earth Goddess whose symbol was the cow) and the Life force of Earth.
- The Capricorn goat.
- The Crystal headed staff of Life (Crystallized light is what earth material is).
- The Reptile Patterned Dress that symbolizes regeneration force (serpents shed their old skin to become new).
- The Pineapple Throne of Earthly Wisdom and nutrition.
For the Qaballist,
the Queen of Disks, is Water of Earth, Specific Water (Consciousness) in the World of Primal Earth (Instinct). She holds a symbol of her ruler-ship over earth, the six sided solid (cubed crystal) that refers to the Altar of the Mysteries. As stated before
, Binah is the "will to form" and is a force that is imposed on the Pure Fiery Energy of Chokmah.
She is known as Understanding, for an idea, once understood, can be molded into manifestation.
Again, these are not Persons, but States of Conscious Energy, called "Beings" that are parts of the Divine Collective Unconscious, meaning the deep Imagination of The Tetragrammaton (YHWH), "All That Is", where images are formed and words won't explain. Images are the only way to realize these deep inner layers of Mind and that before Mind.
Binah is the 3rd Sephiroth/Understanding,
on the Tree of Life, in the upper part called the Supernal Triangle, She is the essence of Womb, and I often call this state of Mind a "Womb with a View", because She conceives by Understanding.
The Queens all represent the Water/Consciousness in each suit; water representing Consciousness. They are enthroned in the Element of Consciousness and make it bring forth the Force of the King, by realization and understanding that develops that force. As consciousness does to idea.
The Queen of Disks, often called the Queen of Pentacles, is also Queen of the Thrones of Earth; Queen of the Gnomes.
Astrological attribution is last
Decan of Sagittarius and the first two Decans of Capricorn.
The Queen of Disks is Water of Earth, a specific consciousness in the Primal Earth element. Most of us call her "Mother Nature".
Her ruler-ship over earth is shown in the crystal cubed scepter that has within it a three sided Hexagram. Her zodiacal attribute to Capricorn is shown by the image of the Goat.
Her Throne is vegetation as she is the life of such. She is the Highest Aspect of passivity and this is shown as a winding passive river flowing through and fertilizing waste land. The Great Work is ultimately expressed in fertility, where the "As a Above manifests in the Below'. She as Queen, is the facilitator of such manifestation.
The Disk on her left arm
is curved with loops and spheres interlaced, representing the ambition of matter to take part in the Great Work.
This ambition is often described as Fecund motion. This is also shown by the Spiral Horns on Her helmet/crown, as Spiral force is both Spirit and Vital Life Force.
The reptilian patterned armor of the Queen represents the regenerative force in nature, as serpents shed their skin to become more.
The Babylonian Tarot Card, Queen of Disks-Gestinana,
also concentrates on the loving nurturing nature of a fruitful Earth.
Gestinana, in Babylonian mythology, was the daughter of the Sheep Goddess Duttur (or Sirtur) and was the loyal sister of Dumuzi (Tammuz) who was the Shepard God of Vegetation. Gestinana, was also the wife of the tree god, Ningiszida. She was also known as the "vine of heaven", as her name was constructed from the word, gestin, meaning grapevine.
In the Sumerian Story of the "Descent of Inanna", Gestinana, is also known as " the wise woman who knows dreams". This title comes from the fact that she interpreted a disturbing dream for Dumuzi . Realizing that the dream was a sign of her brother's impending demise, she hides him in her home.
Finally, the galla demons sent by the gods to haul Dumuzi off to the underworld and torture Gestinana, to find out where he was hiding. She refused to tell, but nevertheless he was eventually caught. But by praying to the sun god, asking him to turn him into a gazelle so that he could escape, the Shepard god managed to run off; only to be caught again.
Lamenting the loss of her brother, Gestinana also became known as "she who always weeps" and presented her weeping presence to Inanna (Ishtar), volunteering to take his place. Inanna, who because of overwhelming remorse for sending him there, takes pity on her and together they go off to the underworld to rescue Dumuzi. Upon arrival, they find Dumuzi weeping, which is just too much for Ishtar so she grants an alternating cycle where Gestinana takes Dumuzi's place for 6 months of the year, resulting in the change of seasons. Gestinana reappears above ground in the Autumn of the year, giving her ruler-ship over the vineyards Autumn harvest. While in the Underworld, Gestinana, served as Ereshkigal's scribe.
Because of her extreme devotion, unselfish loyalty, compassion and self sacrifice, Gestinana has the strength of character to stand firm even under the most extreme pressure.
The Babylonian Tarot depicts Gestinana with grapes and vine in her hair, showing her authority over Autumn. The goat standing in a tree, alludes to her brother Dumuzi, the Shepard god and the earthly sign of Capricorn.
