Tarot Card Comparisons: The Qabalistic Thoth Tarot- 9 of Wands & The Connolly Tarot-9 of Wands

The Tarot of EliIn the Qabalistic Thoth Tarot-The four Nines are attributed to Yesod (Foundation) and after the double incursion into misfortune the energy current has returned to the middle pillar. Balance is restored and energy has crystallized to form the foundation of all things. Yesod is in direct line with Tiphareth (Beauty-the Christ/Sun Sephiroth) so it has a direct  line of succession and manifests the full force of the element. Zoroaster said," The number nine is sacred, and attains the summit of perfection".
The Hermetic Thoth Nine of Wands is called STRENGTH  and is ruled by the Moon and Yesod, therefore, it is Strength in Change.

Sun above (Tiphareth) Moon below (Magnetic womb of Form) forms a balanced flow from God (will-to-force) to Goddess (will-to-form). Of all important doctrines, this is the easiest to understand, change is stability.

Stability is guaranteed by change and if everything stopped changing---even for a second, everything would cease to exist. The One Energy can only keep in motion, by transforming continuously. It is the intense energy of atoms, electrons, protons  and molecules. Hence, change guarantees the order of Nature.

To those of astrological bent, the Moon is known as the weakest planet and Sagittarius as the most elusive. So in this case, the 9 of Wands strength is in mobility, which is the greatest defense for keeping destruction at bay. Even in a simple game of foot ball, motion is the best defense.

The Thoth 9 of Wands, represents Yesod in Aziluth; it is The Lord of Great Strength. It's Planet is the Moon and the sign is Sagittarius.
Angels of the Decan are: Yirthiel, and Sahiah.

The Thoth 9 of Wands-Strength, is the dual influence of Yesod in the World of pure spirit. The Lunar powers do acquire great strength in Sagittarius, but being the Moon, there are two sides to this "coin". Meaning, that successes are usually acquired by strife, apprehension and moments of insecurity.[illustration of Four Worlds, from the book: THE QABALISTIC TAROT, by Robert Wang]

The good health and strength implied in this card are certain, but it harbors doubt about the later course they may take. It is best to know the motto: "Change is Stability", when viewing this card.

The Nines may be considered the best that can be obtained from the type of forces involved, when regarded from a practical-material standpoint.
The Thoth Deck 9 of Wands, shows 8 background Wands as Arrows (Sagittarius influence) and one Master Arrow in the forefront, sporting a Sun at one end as a driving force, and a Moon at the other end as it's point of form.

This implies that Sagittarius joins the Sun and the Moon, and that the Greatest Strength is the Balance of this coupling flow. The flow of Electric Male force and Magnetic Female receptivity. Together, all that is Living Form, is from this flow and reception. When we, as Magi, master both the Male Force and the Female force within, it is called a "Oneness", but a oneness formed by a cooperation of dual wills; will to force and will to form. This dual union of wills, reveals all the 4 Worlds in a communion of the Sun (Father-Will to Force) and the Moon (Mother-Will to Form) that never ceases. The Tenfold flames of the card, imply that the Energy of the Solar Logos, is directed down ward into the "reflection of being".
Great Passions at the expense of the physical  body can happen in this state of Mind but recovery from any illness rendered is assured.
Therefore the mundane divination meaning of this card is great strength, power, recovery from sickness.

The Moon is the ancient symbol used to represent the Womb of the Divine Feminine, therefore, of the Sun, for the Egyptians believed that the Sun followed the Moon across the Sky and that the great She created the great He from herself. Since the Moon, is known as Dark, and the Sun as a symbol of  Light, the Moon before the Sun makes sense even to us moderns, who know that Dark Energy gave birth to the Suns of this Universe and that the electromagnetic union makes all form; even though objectively, the real Moon is a product of dead stars. So to keep from getting confused,  just remember, symbols are a story in image telling a truth.

This is Spiritual Power (Spiraling Energy of Yod), potency, force and internal strength----A  powerful flow of Serpentine Force and/or Kundalini (Sex force) that drives the Great Lust of Will To Form of the Universal Collective Unconscious. This is the Same force felt by a student when learning from a Master Teacher who Channels directly from Kether (Solar Crown on the Middle Energy pillar, connected to the Moon Binah who is Goddess Mother depicted on this card).  Often the Student will become excited molecularity as well as mentally, as this force rises up the spinal/middle pillar of the body and may have to "ground" their energetic excitement before they can either eat or sleep.

This force of  fire born Strength, overcomes any physical resistance to motion and as any power, if ill directed can have negative results. Being directed by the balanced Mental/Emotional realization of Self, it heals, energizes and overcomes.

Either way, the querent will be arriving at peak experience in 9 days, 9 weeks or 9 months depending on the Strength being channeled which is determined by the surrounding cards in the reading. Anyway you look at it, delays are over and swift progress is being made.

The 9 of Wands card represents Great Strength in Union. When the Divine Animus and Divine Anima dance in your Soul and Body (Inner Self) "All things great and small are created"; but if you lean to far towards imbalance, where the electric (Force-Male) and the Magnetic (Magnetic Force-Female) are not dancing in the same rhythm, all emotional (energy-in-motion) becomes "wobbly"  goes to what you concentrate or "lean" towards the most. Hence the English slang, "are you having a wobbly", suggesting one is losing emotional control.

Because of the indoctrination of the mundane, what they fear is what they focus on most, thereby adding more energy to this fear will cause "all hell to break loose"! Therefore, it is best to become emotionally stable before stimulating the Kundalini/inner Sun. Hence, this card also advises us to stop, take a few deep breaths and focus before releasing the Power of Spiritual Will (Will to force and will to form) whose flow is often triggered by anger! For Passion is neither good, nor bad, it is Powerful Energy In Motion.

Spiritual Will is the Spiral Dance of the Communion of The Divine Creative, Electric and Magnetic forces intertwined, and in any passionate expression, we Will to Force and then often will it to form as a "curse".  In order to influence the invisible, (doing magic) the magus, uses Will, Passion, and intent as the trinity of powerful focus and unknowingly, many of us do the same when in great throws of anger and fear. To unleash inner strength only when we feel threatened, is a slave's reaction to the environment. Hence a master of self, is always Present and like the Sun, is always bright, and warm, even when unseen, like the Moon, changes the tides of environment.

Just to be "made Manifest", requires the perfect rhythmic union of the Divine Anima and Divine Animus.  Therefore, becoming a perfect balance of Will to Force and Will to Form, establishing the As above so below of the Universal Great Work, happens even in the most mundane of "wobbly" people, who have such wondrous moments when everything aligns, and experience a "healing".

Often for the mundane reading, the 9 of Wands represents a Strength of Will, that may not be optimized, but is unusual and is exciting.

The Connolly Tarot, 9 of Wands,
follows the mundane explanation of strength.
Illustrated, is a fiery haired man (depicting the cards assigned element of fire) choosing a wand from the group that seems to form a loose fence on a low brick wall.  The message seems to be that one is in control of their interests and that discretion is to be used in any forth coming decision.
The leafing of the wands, represents the fecund union of Fire/ Will to Force and the Earth, feminine Will to Form. All that applies to the Hermetic Thoth Tarot, applies here.

When the 9 of Wands card is thrown during a reading, it implies:
  • Internal strength, recovery from illness, potency and spiritual force.
  • Yet, it is Moon in Yesod, so one may have to defend their ideas, but because of Sagittarius, will not lack the strength to do so.
  • The 9 of Wands also implies that energy is brought back into balance, thus health restored.
  • Creatively, this card implies a peek experience in ability were one sees clearly and accurately, leading to solid creations that will have the strength to endure over time.
  • Here the Energy of the Spirit is rapid, interchanging both electric and magnetic energy, taking whatever action is necessary to restore balance and thus enable the Creative Mind. (Moon is ruler of the Sub-conscious).
