The Hermetic Thoth Tarot- 2of Cups-Love:
Chokmah, the 2nd Sephiroth called Wisdom, is a state of Pure Maleness
or rather the beginning of the idea of maleness, and that Binah is that
of Pure Femaleness, or the beginning of the idea of Femaleness.
Another way to say this is the concept of Will to Force, Chokma is becoming
electric/expression, while the concept of Will to Form, Binah, is becoming magnetic/containment.
both are from Kether that is primarily a point, therefore without depth or magnitude. Hence before I became two; the I AM.
As we tend to understand sexuality, is not a vast enough
idea to encompass even a minor understanding of the communion of the Supernal Triangle of Kether, Chokmah and Binah.
To help with the confusion, generated by "where male is not male, nor the Female-female" (Gnostic Gospel of Didymos Judas Thomas). I'll say that Pure Male is Electric-Will to Force and Pure Female
is Magnetic- Will to Form; but again, understanding of these Two "Wills" is not
In the Hermetic
Qabalistic Thoth deck The Two's represent the "first
(symbol of the fish). On the Qabalistic Tree of Life, we know
Kether to be the 1st Sephira, and many have thought that this is the
first manifestation of conscious energy. Yet Kether is the "limitless
light", and has no end or beginning, which allows no viewing. Therefore
Kether is known as the "Dark Sun" as it can't be seen, so to see it, Kether is often depicted as White Blazing Light and therefore, is the least
understood concept of the Tree of Life sigil.
Leave it to say that the First manifestation falls to the Twos, which are represent in the 2nd Sephiroth- Chokma (Wisdom).
The Four Alchemical Elements may be ideas in Kether, but only upon reaching the Deuces are they in appearance.
Therefore, the Twos represent the Elements uncontaminated by influence, hence they appear in their original harmonious condition.
The Two of Cups-Love
is also called the Lord of Love
and this is easily seen as it represents Venus in Cancer. The angels of
the Decan are, Ayoel and Chabooyah.
The Two of Cups is
the influence of Chokmah in the Mental world of Briah.
Cups represent the
Alchemical element Water, which is the wave like action consciousness/emotion. Since Cancer is a
watery sign that is the House of the Moon, the match up is
obvious. Jupiter is also exalted in Cancer thus implying benevolence in
this most sensitive of signs.
This is a card
of feeling and romance in the human world, so misspent energy may
Generally, fish are a symbol of the Goddess Venus but dolphins
relate more generally to Neptune or the Sun god Apollo. However, the word Dolphin comes from the Greek-delphinos, which means womb. The dolphin was the totem of Demeter as mistress of the Sea. This changed according to classical myth, when the dolphin image was place among the stars as the constellation Delphinus, as a matchmaker who successfully brought together the Sea Goddess, Amphitrite and Poseidon. This was a later invention to elevate the god Poseidon at the expense of another title of The Goddess of The Sea. On Grecian urns, the dolphin/porpoise represented the soul passing to another world.
The early peoples understood the Porpoise/dolphins to be fish, as the concept of aquatic mammals was unknown to them. However, there is a dolphin fish and somewhat confusingly a dolphin aquatic mammal. The early Christians used the fish to represent the acronym, "Jesus Christ, Son of God" using the excuse that the Greek Word for Fish, icthys, spelled this out. But this was just Christianity coping one of the many pagan symbols they revised to fit their philosophy. Icthys was originally a name given to the son of an ancient sea goddess-Atargatis (also known as Delphine,Tirgata, Aphrodite, Derceto, Salacia, or Pelagia) whose name also meant "womb" or "Dolphin". Hence, the symbol of the fish or Dolphin, was often used to depict supernatural relationships. On
the Two of cups, we can see (by careful scrutiny as the colors are
somewhat faded) a Silvery Dolphin and a Golden Dolphin; the Silver one
represents the Moon, Female and the Golden one represents the Sun, male.
Here the union of both is loving, and romantic, as they work together
to bring light into our world. The Two of Cups represents the harmony of male/electric and female/magnetic, which is
also the nature of the Water sign Cancer.
Water of Emotion, or Consciousness, springs up from the Central Lotus, on the Thoth card,
flowing down into the overflowing cups to ultimately reach the Earth.
This imagery implies that only through the energy supplied by
Chokmah-Fire, can water flow. E-motion, is energy in motion, and the "motion within the movement' is Chokmah's domain.
Qabalistic Gematria (the book 777, by Aliester Crowley), the number Two
refers also to Will, So the Two of Cups can also imply Love under will
or Willful Love. The Two of Cups radiates a perfect placid harmony, amid
joyous ecstasy...often called the "adorable fire".
may be a tendency, among some readers to think of this card as one would the Major Arcana
Card-key 6- The Lovers. But that is not usually so, as the Two of Cups is
about Love being physical, between Two human partners. Where as, the
Lovers Card-key 6- refers to the inner Hermetic Marriage of the love
between the Yin Yang, balanced in harmonious union as the inner Divine Creative Self.
To a Qabalist, Key
6 rather than the 2 of Cups, would be the Love of Binah and Chokmah, the original Anima and Animus, of
Wisdom and Understanding. However, the surrounding cards will show if
this is the Hermetic Marriage of the anima and animus within or of two romantic mates in the human world. Here is where the intuition of the Reader
is most helpful as well. For Love is such a powerful energy movement that it
can overcome all limits of restriction and burn away in pure "adorable
fire" (Paul Foster Case), any reasoning. If the 2 of cups and key 6-The Lovers show up together, we definitely have an inner, anima and animus and outer physical sexual love, the combination of which is often called "soul mates".
The Connolly Tarot- 2 of Cups, depicts the deep love between a man and woman. This everlasting love is shown by the infinity sign,(figure eight on its side) which was/is used in India as the sign of infinity or completeness, as it is composed of a male/solar light, clockwise/right hand half circle and a female counterclockwise, left hand half Lunar circle.
Therefore, the figure eight or infinity sign, both represented the sexual union of male and female, in equal standing, as both are side by side. Therefore this sign is an understanding of the equal and intimate, Will to Force and Will to Form, male and female powers of the Divine Creative.
The Rose pink of love, and the blue of the Water element are both prevalent throughout this card.
The two equal cups, the diamond path of "Male/female" union, leading to a heavenly garden gateway are also symbols of this equality of the masculine and feminine.
