Tarot Card Comparisons: The Hermet Thoth Tarot- 3 of Cups-Abundance & The Connolly Tarot- 3 of Cups

The Tarot of EliThe Thoth Tarot of the Hermetic Qabalah-3 of Cups-Abundance:

The Pomegranate Cups of the Three of Cups, represents the fruit Persephone ate in the realms of Pluto (Hades), thereby allowing him to hold her in the lower world even after the most powerful influence was brought to bear. There is a subtle message here, that the good things in life should be enjoyed, but with a level of distrust.

Although the name pomegranate means "apple of many seeds", its biblical name was rimmon, from rim, to bear a child.  Hence, throughout the ancient world, the pomegranate, with its "numerous offspring" and red juice, was used as a representative symbol of the womb. Representing fertility, pomegranates were carved in the pillars of Kings Solomon's Temple (1 Kings 7:18-20).
Solomon himself, was said to impersonate Baal-Rimmon, the Lord of the Pomegranate, when he mated with his holy bride and drank the juice of her pomegranate (Song of Solomon 8:2).

To the Queen of Heaven, was the pomegranate assigned in Europe. Be she Hera, Mari or Juno, the shine of Our Lady with the pomegranate (near Paestrum), still shows the Madonna with her child in one hand and the pomegranate in the other. Before the Madonna, at the same shrine, was a very ancient "pagan" Goddess, seated and holding her child in one hand and a pomegranate in the other; both were worship in the same way. Hence the pomegranate is a worthy symbol of the Divine Feminine.

In the Thoth Deck, The Three of Cups represents Binah (All Mother) in the suit of Water and is the the card of the "Queen of Heaven", Demeter, Hera, Juno, Mari, or Persephone. Binah, the second Sephira-Understanding, is symbolized by the calm dark Sea, from which arises a  multi-bloomed single Lotus (many states of the One Goddess) that fills the Cups to overflowing. Being the Spiritual basis of fertility, this card is the fulfillment of the Will of Love in abounding joy.

The Three of Cups zodiacal reference is  the influence of Mercury in Cancer.  Mercury, is the Will or Word of the All Father, and here it is descending on the most receptive of Signs, Cancer, whose planet is the Moon; another symbol of the Womb.

However, the mysterious ideas brought about by this objective card abound, as Binah, the Great Sea of Life, is also the Moon in one aspect and Saturn in another (eater of its own children); and Mercury who is also known as the guide to the souls of the dead. Needless to say, this card requires great subtlety of interpretation.

Since the Qabalistic Thoth Deck Tarot is inseparable from the Tree of Life, and the minor arcana (small cards) are numbered according to the Serphiroth that rules their action, the threes are all associated with Binah, Understanding. Thus, in each suit of the threes the idea has become fertilized, i.e. Understood and because of this fertilization, the triangle has become formulated. In Qabalah and geometry, we know that the triangle is the strongest structure (Trinity), an empirically stable plane and therefore, the idea of the card is now a strong union that is able to give birth to children, and thus evolve.

Therefore, in the Three of Cups, the idea of Love has become fruitful and has multiplied. It is now known that Love is the foundation of all Forms, i.e. Abundance. It is love that has made you. The Love of Being you, is why you exist. Hence, your Greater Self, The Divine Creative, is your true Parent, composed of a Triad of Love that operates the Divine Collective Unconscious Macrocosm and the Microcosmic collective that is"YOU", as Itself.

The Three of cups represents the understanding of the idea, of "Above all things know thyself", i.e."I AM ME". This is Just the Understanding that has willed form and has created all that is!
You may note that Love is sufficiently far enough down the Tree (Binah) to give Form to idea, which introduces a very definite distinction between the suits, which before was not possible as the distinction between Kether, Chokma, (Will to Force) is most subtle; being that the distinguishing fire/ vibration/ sound  is heard only in Dark-Silence.
Hence the Thoth-3 of Cups-is Emotional Abundance.
This special card represents the fulfillment of The Will of Love in abounding joy.
Subtly, the 3 card also reminds us that the good things in life are not to be trusted as stationary, rather they are temporary items.

Therefore mundanely,  this card represents emotional or intuitive clarification; clearer about what  your feelings and intuition are saying.

Again, astrologically, this card is Mercury in Cancer.

  1. Mercury, on top of card, is the symbol of communication.
  2. Cancer, is the ability to communicate the emotional feelings one has especially the nurturing, loving, and light feelings one has as represented by the golden lotus blossoms spraying the "pollen of golden light" into the pomegranate cups.
  3. Pomegranate cups, represent the rich emotions one has received from others.
  4. The golden lotus represents the "solar plexus" chakra of an enlightened being, so this is emotion from deep within; the master within each of us.

The Connolly Tarot, 3 of Cups,
also represents abundance. As the Red Wine flows from the Cherub of the Suit of Water, as Yods of red life force, filling the cups of the loving couple.
Here again, the roses and rose pink colors and the happy Cherub, represent the emotion of Love.

When Thrown during a divination,
the 3 of cups can also represent:

  • The deep emotional , abundant feelings that we have for  three important people in our lives;
  • Or it can represent that the next 3 weeks or 3 months should be a good time to communicate your deep feelings and utilize you nurturing communication abilities to motivate, empower, and comfort others.
  • Remembering the Cancer people in your life (June 21 to July 21) with loving abundance and/or to communicate your deep feelings.
  • This card is about love, abundance, healing and the expansion and liberation of self that those feelings generate.
  • Being ternary, this card states that all three states of self identity are involved in communicating these abundant feelings; sub-conscious, consciousness, and self-conscious (ego to some).
  • Plenty, hospitality, eating, drinking, pleasure, dancing, new clothes and merriment.
  • Abundance, plenty, success, sensuality, passive success, good luck and fortune.
  • This card reminds me of the God of Wine, Bacchus, who engages in all the above in a bounty of food and wine....and suffering the hang-over the next day.
  • The observant Reader should caution the Querent, that although great abundance is available, and to be enjoyed; try not to over do it.

Thank you for your interest, comments and supportive donations. May you live long and prosper!
