The Hermetic Qabalah- Thoth Tarot:
The Four Fours of the Thoth Tarot are
attributed to Chesed-Mercy- on the
Qabalistic Tree of Life. There is also a connection between the Threes
and the Fours that is extremely complex. However, by just
remembering the important characteristic that the Fours are "below the
Abyss", meaning they are responsible for solidification and
materialization of the element they represent. Thus the Fours explain
that things have become manifest and expressed as the Rule of Law.
The Four of Cups:
Four of Cups- Luxury, is attributed to the alchemical Element-Water. The weakness
of Water as a solvent, threatens its purity (its weakness is also its strength) and it is not quite strong enough to
control itself properly and is a little unstable. Somehow, the purity of
emotion, is lost in the process of satisfaction. Hence as does water, emotion
in a state of "pooled" satisfaction, becomes putrid, unless new
emotional expression (Water flow) is added. It is easily understood that
emotions are a "wobbly bit" of energy flow that left to it's own
incapable of controlling itself properly and comes out in a gush of
irrationality at the weakest point in our self -image. Thus,
such static emotions as satisfaction, happiness, lust, etc,
frustratingly seem to be fleeting as they degrade into dissatisfaction,
unhappiness and boredom; but then, the process of flow is necessary to
keep energy in motion as energy forms "proceed from order to disorder" is the
Rule of Law in our material world ( 2nd Law of Thermodynamics).
Therefore a truly aware
that today's feelings are for the pleasure of the creative-living
moment, not dead in the past, nor to dedicated to a future that isn't.
For to live in the dead past, or the nonexistent future, is to be "dead" today. So when a moment of satisfaction is enjoyed, celebrate it
and then move on. Life its a satisfying journey, a motion within movement, rather than a static goal
With the Moon in Cancer(Moon on top of card, Cancer sign on bottom)
, there is the
influence of Chessed (Mercy) in the unconscious mental realm/The Creative World.
There is a
certain self-satisfaction with this card that is felt as an emotional luxury; pleasure flowing from an unconscious source.
Illustrated on the Thoth Card is an outpouring of emotional luxury from above, which is not overflowing in the
lower cups, symbolizing that this pleasure will soon end but for now,
the feeling of you having everything you need in your life is luxuriant
and you are not now open for suggestions.
Again, the Four of Cups-Luxury, refers to the Sephira Chesed in the
suit of Water. Here the Pure Water of the Supernal Triangle has passed
through the Abyss to Chesed (Mercy) and although ordered, balanced, or
stabilized, it has lost the purity of its conception. You might say,
that instead of pure energy in motion, it is now an emotional idea held
in conceptional confinement.
Being that the Moon is in her own
house in Cancer, one would think it was well placed. However, Cancer is
so placed that this implies a certain weakness, a abandonment to
The calm Sea
of the 3 of cups is still present in the 4,
but slightly ruffled, implying a disturbance is building and therefore making the
Four Cups that are standing on the sea less stable.
The Spirit of the Lotus, the
Dryad, has gathered strength, growing multiple stems, supporting one
Lotus Blossom spewing forth water. The Four stems, are the number of
manifestation for the Dryad, it is also secretly preparing a catastrophe
by emphasizing individuality.
By understanding that the number
Four is a "awkward" number that is alone among the natural numbers, it is therefore
impossible to construct a "Magic Square" of four cells. Hence, four being a
"dead stop" number, it is therefore necessary to have a different idea of Order to carry on the
series. However for now, everything is seemingly luxurious in stability,
but the Changing of the Moon, its waxing and waning, is such that this
Water is emotion (Energy in Motion) and for energy to
keep moving, the damning effort of the number four, will fail. Change
is the formula for motion (Change=Stability). Four is the number of
restriction, as in "Four walls" etc, and as a cage, it shows a certain
amount of stability, until the energy gets tired of confinement. We all
know the weakness of putrefaction in stable water, it must keep moving
to stay pure.
The Connolly Tarot, 4 of Cups, depicts one basking in the rosy glow of luxurious feelings. There is a certain boredom also, as everything has reached an emotional stability, the stack of three cups, causing one to ignore opportunity, such as receiving the angelic fourth cup.
The Connolly Tarot card seems to suggesting that "resting on one's laurels" should only be a temporary repose.
