Tarot Card Comparisons: The Hermetic Thoth Tarot- 9 of Cups-Happiness & The Connolly Tarot-9 of Cups

The Tarot of EliThe Qabalistic Thoth Tarot-NINE OF CUPS-HAPPINESS.
In the Qabalistic Thoth Tarot-The four Nines are attributed to Yesod (Foundation) and after the double incursion into misfortune the energy current has returned to the middle pillar. Balance is restored and energy has crystallized to form the foundation of all things. Yesod is in direct line with Tiphareth (Beauty-the Christ/Sun Sephiroth) so it has a direct  line of succession and manifests the full force of the element. Zoroaster said," The number nine is sacred, and attains the summit of perfection".

The Thoth- 9 of Cups is called HAPPINESS and is ruled by Jupiter and Jupiter is known as good fortune. Happiness implies luck. However, Jupiter is in Pisces, a watery sign, which is based more on a certain element of illusion. Like the illusion of  Romantic Love, it is more like a "dream within a dream". Being ruled by Jupiter does bring good fortune here, but it is based more on satiety stating that the fullest satisfaction begins the next putrefaction; change brings stability to motion. Absolute rest is an illusion.

Hence Jupiter in Pisces, suggests the benevolence of Jupiter functions through the Water/Emotion of Pisces effecting happiness and satisfaction in the Material world.

Represented here is the happiness of the innocent who has sensual pleasure as Spirit in Being rather than a being looking for pleasure.
Sometimes I just sit, and experience Me, it feels good to do so, for I Am is existence and Me is the sensual Life.

I have noticed my fellows dashing madly about, with screaming horns, blaring lights and faces set in grimaced hurry. Always going, always running but to where? Most say,"... there, I have to go there." What they really mean," if I stop the enemy will get me." That  enemy they are fleeing from, is not of a race, creed or color, nor is it a sex or responsibility, it is the fear of Pain, lack and discomfort, all of which are the many colored shadows of fear of death, enforced by indoctrination.

The nightmare of mortality has destroyed our Utopian dream and life becomes suffering as Dreams of loss become human beings running for "the one thing" that will make us happy"; Dreams become people and  as reflections of mind, people must become their dreams, even if they are nightmares buried deep in the group unconsciousness. When one is born, one is happiness, but being perverted by fear of pain, (fear of the lash), the identity is enslaved to fight or flight purposes. Here one is their own worst enemy, and the slave becomes his own slave driver. Happiness for such an identity, must be pursued.

The Dreams of Stars, became atoms, atoms ejaculate by the Stars, made Earth, and the Dreams of Earth are myriad in in Her Ocean mind and became alive as plants, insects, fish and animals. Dreams made all living beings, and the Dreams of the Divine I, made He and She; the I Am. The resulting intimacy of He-Electric and She-Magnetic   (I AM) became fertile in union, Goddess & God became pregnant with potential and "Me" was their golden child.  Simply, I AM is existence, Me is sensual life; I AM Happily Being.

Our universal inheritance is that One Mind of the Dreaming Couple,i.e. Imagination,  who became through the ternary process of I AM ME: that is, the Universe by dreaming of itself. Those who know they are the Dream of God and Goddess; the Divine Creative, dreaming it is Both Parents and Child, are very happy. They know that the nightmare of "enemy; you know, the one seeking to destroy our comfort, is merely the trick of a man made ego dreaming about "what it isn't", rather than I AM Me.

Many of us are taught to not be the "Me" that was already approved of by the Divine Creative, rather, to be a "man made" me, who must seek approval of its "masters".  Such thinking of the "pursuit of happiness", turns the bright shining Psyche, into a tarnished slave who sells its identity to whomever peddles, things, stuff, and presumed approval as happiness. For to pursue anything, implies lack of that thing. Happiness, is Being not pursuit of being. To not understand that Being is your purpose, is to not be grateful for the Sensuality "Me" gives you. It is time to be grateful, for now your Psyche's dream, is lucid, therefore, changeable and forever yours to manipulate by discernment.
Thank you Divine Creative for that!

To the Hermetic Qabalist, this card represents Yesod (Foundation) in Briah (The Mental World). This is a card of emotional balance that is known as a pleasure of being yourself. Happiness is our Natural state whereas,  unhappiness is a state of natural fear; our unhappiness is an artificial fear, called "Stress", invented to drive us forward pulling the Chariots of Greed that our "masters ride".

I love this card, for it reminds me to stop and feel the beauty of being me. For only then can a smile of delight open my eyes to the beauty all around me and as me.  I AM the Happiness that Mastered Sensuality! I AM ME.

Those who have read my blogs, know by now that Yesod, the ninth Sephiroth, is the Foundation of all manifested forms and forces on Malkuth-the physical plane of the Qabalistic Tree of Life.

The Nines, generally show very great fundamental force because they rest on the Firm Foundation Base of Yesod.
Now this is pure power, which is neutral, so that means it can be used negatively or positively, depending on the perspective of the user. Discrimination and/or discernment is the Key here.
THE NINE OF CUPS-Lord of Material Happiness, is as stated, Jupiter in Pisces. The Angels of the Decan are Saliah and Asriel.

The Qabalistic Thoth Nine of Cups is Yesod in Briah, the lower triangle,  influencing the Material World. Here, the benevolence of Jupiter, effects happiness and satisfaction in the Earth plane (Malkuth), by functioning through the Water of Pisces.
This is a card of sensuality, as all number cards represent the "objective" and in this case, a sensual pleasure, more mystical than convention allows and less stable than the Ten; However, Happiness is now flowing and reaching towards the mystical states of ecstasy. Here, sensual pleasure, may be felt as a religious experience as the influence of Jupiter is strong in the passive, receptive and somewhat psychic character of Pisces. Jupiter in Pisces also indicates pleasant travel by water and brings good fortune through occupations governed by Neptune. The Mind is the Ocean of Image, and we are the self-image of this Ocean, therefore we are "Fish" that are entirely made of Ocean, and who the Ocean flows through so it can "see" itself.  Happiness is therefore comparable to a free swimming fish, sensually experiencing the ocean. To seek happiness, is a fish in the ocean seeking water. Such a pursuit is futile indeed!

The personality inclination here is a tendency for kindness, quiet and unassuming, with an unambitious approach to life. If the planet Jupiter, is well dignified, there may be a more ambitious approach to occupation.

The Square arrangement of the Cups, on the Thoth Card, overflowing into one another, suggests Chesed-Jupiter (Mercy) and the perfection of Water force; a dreamy current of Consciousness which is also reinforced by Yesod-9, being the number of the Moon. Pisces brings out the most Placid form of Water ( consciousness), so this card is a Happiness well-spring that floods into our normal state of consciousness. The recipient of this Happiness, really doesn't ponder a reason to be happy, for their own consciousness has not reasoned it out as a logical way to be, they "just are"  and they feel "good all over". One knows, that the Happiness of the Divine Couple, built them, so they are the manifestation of Divine Happiness.

The Connolly Tarot,9 of Cups, is the traditional mundane "wish" card.
Therefore,it's fall in the spread is important to its meaning. If in the 10th position of a Celtic Cross reading, it is a wish fulfilled. The other cards of the divination will determine how it is fulfilled.
Of course, if the other cards are prone to the negative, it means wishes won't be fulfilled at this time.

The rosy glow of this card just helps illustrate that everything is rosy and dreams have come true.

So when the Nine of Cups-Happiness, is thrown during a reading, it implies:
  • Contentment and Satisfaction.
  • Everything looks and feels "rosy".
  • The querent, is enjoying self-esteem and inner joy; Flowing feelings of inspiration and joy.
  • The dull thunk in this chiming joy, is that this is temporary, as Change is the stability of the Universe; "the cat's away, so the mice can play", kind of moment.
  • Before reason takes over, and finds the logical points of survival thinking that messes up or mitigates "unmitigated joy".
  • Is about a full and happy life that should continue.
  • Is complete success and fulfillment of wishes.
  • We are reminded to look into the Rainbow Mirror and delight in our beautiful reflection of many colors.
