The Qabalistic Thoth Tarot- The Empress-Key 3, is attributed to Daleth
, the Hebrew letter that means Door,
and is ruled by the vibrations of the Planet Venus.
On the face of it,
the Empress is a compliment to the Emperor-Key 4 but her attributes are
more Macrocosmic and Universal as compared to his more Microcosmic and
The path of Daleth (on the Hermetic
Qabalah Tree of Life) unites the Father and Mother, Chokma (2-Wisdom)
and Binah (3-Understanding). Despite the number sequence, this is not
saying one came before the other, rather Chokma-Wisdom and Binah-Understanding are inseparable and simultaneous. For when the Kether
(Crown) became I AM---so became existence which is the United
combination of Feminine and Masculine.
Also showing this spontaneous
of the Divine Anima and Animus, there is the alchemical symbol of
Venus, which is the only planetary symbol that comprises all the
Sephiroth of the Tree of Life. The Doctrine implied here, is that the
fundamental formula for the Universal creation is Love (The Law of Attraction).
The Magnetic Womb,
and Women is difficult to summarize in a paragraph, let alone one word. Therefore the Greek
quote."Many-throned, many-minded, many-wiled, daughter of Zeus", points
us into the direction of the mystery that is "The Womb With A View"
, is both the Highest Spiritual and lowest of material qualities (as above, so below) as she is the Mother of Form
all planes of existence while she is also the Alchemical SALT which is
one of the three forms of alchemical energy (Mercury and Sulfur are the
other two). Salt is seen as the inactive part of Nature (Womb) that
must be stimulated by Sulfur (Phallus) to maintain the whirling (spiral)
equilibrium of the Universe. The Arms and torso of the Thoth Deck
Empress illustration consequently suggests the shape of the Alchemical
symbol of Salt.
The Empress card shows
in crown and vestments of the Imperial, seated upon a throne. Her
throne uprights suggest blue twisted flames symbolic of Her birth from
Water, the Feminine Element that is Magnetic. In her right hand is a
Lotus of Isis; suggesting the Passive Power of the Feminine (the Power that Contains
The roots of the Lotus are in the Earth beneath the Water itself, but
its petals are open to the Sun, suggesting the belly of the chalice,
i.e. the Holy Grail. She is then the Living Form of the Holy Grail (Yoni)
sanctified by the blood of the Sun (the Sun ejaculates energy which she
accepts; semen is of blood). Perched on the Throne's uprights are a
sparrow and a dove, her most sacred birds. On her robe are bees and
dominoes surrounded by continuous spiraling lines. Her girdle is the
Zodiac. The symbol of the Womb's Love of Form is everywhere similar on
The tapestry beneath the Throne
is embroidered Fleur-de-lys
and fishes (fishes being the symbol of the First Matter) and also the Secret Rose
which is at the base of the Throne. This is the Rose-Mari,
a sacred symbol/Grail of the ancient Goddess Mari-The Ocean Goddess,
who was seen as the Womb of all Life on Earth. On this card there are no
contradictions; what seems to contradict are held in equilibrium by the
revolving moons shown on this card.
The heraldry of the Empress is two fold.
On her right is a Pelican feeding its own young with blood from its
heart. On her left, is the white Eagle of the Alchemist. Meditation and
study, will clarify the deeper meanings of this Heraldry. The Pelican
can be identified as The Great Mother and the offspring as her Daughter (Consciousness)
who becomes many. The understanding of this Hermetic symbolism is as
deep as the Ocean, and that is the why and wherefore of initiations.
Love is not just a personal human emotion, which is but an offspring of the Universal Love that emotes from the Ocean of The Universal Collective Unconscious, as The Law of Attraction; Magnetism.
Being a Metaphysicist I know that to seek love, is to deny being love;
rather we are Love (electric-Animus and Magnetic-Anima) who Creates Itself as off-spring, i.e. "Self
Reflection". I think this is a deep enough plunge in the Divine Anima
(Latin: Spirit) and/or The Divine Feminine to end here; However, the Law of Attraction demands that one be it to see it--- so by declaring I AM Love, Love abounds in one's life.
The Qabalistic and metaphysical, symbolism of The Empress, may have been heavily explain by now; however, there is much more to realize if one is to be a powerful reader of Qabalistic Tarot.
is necessary for the reader to understand that all nature is bound
together in a continuity of life-blood. That no one is separated from the Divine Collective Unconscious/Empress. Even the Great Mother Ocean of Earth flows in
all of us, as even our blood PH is that of the Ocean PH; salt.
The Thoth Deck key 3,
The Empress, thus flows in our "Life Force" and both Male and Female are her "children/daughter"; all Form belongs to her.
We must also see
that there is no break between light and dark. The Dark is the
foundation substance that light reflects on. This phenomena is often
called the two sides of the mirror; dark side and light side. Isis
(the reflected) is not a different Goddess than Nephthys (the darkness),
She is the "other side" of Her. When these considerations are fully
understood, it is possible to reconcile Quantum Theory with
Electromagnetic equations. Also the fact that in our universe is the
phenomena of the "Dark Hole", whose fantastic magnetism and gravity sucks in even
light, and stars, only to eject all that darkness consumes, into another
Universe as a "White hole". This is the a great example of the Dark and
The consort of the Empress
is the Key 4-The Emperor, his Red Eagle (Sulfur) corresponds to her
White Eagle (Salt). For the student it is often necessary to understand
that sometimes, with these High Cards, it is necessary to work
backwards, as these are symbols of perfection
. In the Empress
and Emperor we have the initial perfection of Nature (a perfect economy
of energy) and the Perfection of the Art (...to be). I hope I am not
confusing anyone here, as I try to explain the inexplicable nature of
Dark Energy and Dark Matter as pro-creators of visible light. The fact
that Spiral Energy (Spirit) is Dark Energy, may go beyond our
understanding; However, realizing that Spirit makes forms out of light
by the process of "Self Reflection" in mirrors of magnetism, may help corral
this elusive idea.
The Arch or door, at the back of The Thoth Empress card, is representative of the Gate of Heaven;
the transition from reflected light to the darkness of unlimited light;
from the unconscious to the conscious. The student who is dazzled by
any given manifestation may be led astray, for there is no other card
that explains the axiom,"Can't see the forest through the trees",
better than this one. The competent Tarot reader must look past the
parts to see the whole of the Empress, for the state of Divine
Feminine/Anima is more than the sum of her forms.
The Jungian Tarot of Robert Wang,
uses the symbols of the Jungian dream psychology to depict his Empress.
She is attractively depicted as a kind and benevolent mother whose fruitfulness is shown in the green foliage around her.
The golden cup, she holds represents the Gail or Yoni (female regenerative organ), however, by understanding in the most abstract sense, she is the Universal Yoni herself.
Behind the Empress is the Ocean of Unconscious, also referring to her virgin phase as the High Priestess. However, in this Ocean is a "dragonish" serpent, which represents her destructive phase as the Hecate, as shown in the Moon card.
More aspects of the Divine Anima are emerging beneath her feet, as the dove aspect of Venus, The Goddess of Love and the Cave/Yoni of Mother Earth, who is the ruler of the Underworld, which Carl Jung called the "Cythonic" realm.
The Empress is Mother who is the extension of the qualities of the Anima and represents the nurturing qualities of the Divine Anima.
Throughout Hermetic Qabalistic symbolism it is shown that there is nothing in manifestation but the Animus-male and the Anima-female. To say this scientifically, there is nothing manifest but electromagnetic energy.
The interaction of the Divine Feminine and the Divine Masculine (now making them Father and Mother) produces the Son (6th Sephira-Tiphareth) who is the manifestation of the Perfected Self that is the compilation of the perfect balance of the opposites.
Frequently when meditating, onemay move from the inner conversation with their own physical mother to conversation with the Archetypal Mother of the Mysteries, Theologies and Mythologies. Therefore, one skries the Empress card to achieve such conversation.
When the Empress card is thrown during a reading, the querent is experiencing:
- Beauty, happiness, pleasure, success, and also luxury.
- There is also wise-love implied here.
(the Womb with a View) is everything here and there is an opening
towards all sensuality, implying a welcoming person who is receptive and
finding great comfort in Nature;creatures and people without need for
- One is contacting the Universal Mother in their meditations and/or divinations.
In order for this card to be ill defined, some very "evil" cards must accompany it in order to imply:
- a certain self indulgence and intemperate living.
Esoterically, this card is the " Universal Mother" of the ternary Goddess, "Maid, Mother and Crone".
