Tarot Card Comparisons: The Qabalistic Thoth Tarot- 2 of Cups: Love & The Jungian Tarot - 2 of Cups: Adventure

The Tarot of EliSome of you may understand that Chokma, the Hebrew word for Wisdom, is the #2 Sephiroth on the Tree of life. You may also understand that Chokma is attributed to Male  Will-to-force, even though "he" has the potential to radiate the "pure  female", as it is an unbroken flow to Binah (understanding) who has the potential of the creation of all life-forms.  To understand there is no more a division of male-female than there is in time-space, will greatly heed your understanding of your self!

From the ordinary linear point of view, Chokma is really #1 rather than #2, because he is the first manifestation and/or the "I"; Kether (Crown) is completely sealed, unseen, because limitless light, is unseen. Nobody knows anything about it at all, even the Quantum Physicists that call Kether, Dark Energy, know nothing about dark energy. All we know is that it is the "swirling force" that moves the universe. It's kind of like the foot print in the Jello that tells you there is an unseen "elephant in the fridge"..(Old joke:-----" How do you tell if an elephant is in your refrigerator?" Answer: "By the Foot Prints in the Jello!").

In reality, only upon reaching the Hermetic Two, does an element appear as itself. Since, Chokma is completely uncontaminated by influence; the elements appear here in their original harmonious condition.

 The Two of Cups:
Is the Lord of Love, or Husbandry of Love. Thus, two of cups is preforming the same office for Water as the two of Wands is playing for fire. "
To understand that when He is Created She is created, may be seen by the unbroken equal paths connecting Kether to  Chokma and Binah, on the Qabalistic Tree of Life, that is the  Chokma -Binah path that is called the Empress Card. Just as it is impossible to separate electric from magnetic, so it is impossible to separate the electric masculine from the magnetic feminine.
Understanding the Twos, kind of gives you that annoying brain buzz, as the heart dumps the  understanding of the paradox of the Divine Creative in the structured brain-world of linear separation. But  like a Taoist Koan, I find this a worthy investment of "buzzing confusion", for it shows that all of us are just "pretending" to be real!

The Thoth 2 of Cups, Love:

As I have mentioned before, the Two is the Qabalistic number that represents "the Word and the Will" (I Am) and is the first manifestation.
In the suit of water, this is Venus in Cancer. As I have stated, and will again, Astrologers know Cancer to be the most receptive of signs and is the House of the Moon. Jupiter is most exalted in Cancer. Thus we have arguably the three most friendly Planets, Moon, Venus and Jupiter, linked together in mutual positives forming a visual ménage à trois.

For those of us who aren't astrologers: In the element of water, Love is the force that recovers unity from individuality by the process of mutual annihilation.  In other words, Love changes both individuals and combines them in a new form, and therefore considered a metaphysical solvent, such as water is a physical one.

The Two of Cups shows two overflowing cups in the foreground, on a calm sea. The translucent  water (represents energy in motion/emotion) flows from a Lotus, filling the cups, while another Lotus arises from the sea, supporting two Dolphins. The Dolphins are Alchemical symbols of solution and can be studied by looking into alchemical reference material. The Alchemical Dolphin Symbol is a little too lengthy, and out of context with the Qabalistic Gnosis, so I won't go into detail. However, John Dee, royal Alchemist in Queen Elizabeth's Court could be an interesting reference point.

The number two refers to Will, so The Two of Cups is also known as the Lord of Love under Will, and shows the harmonic technology of Female-Male in the largest sense of the words, i.e. The Divine Creative/ I AM.

This language may sound deliberately obtuse, but this is an invisible Force, that human words cannot give form, so we must unite words in such away that they allude to the mystery, rather than literate identification. That is why poetry is the "language of love".
If you ever have experienced a self-annihilating love where the ego becomes lost in the Overflowing Sensation of Being One from the Union of Two, you'll understand that you just can't "wrap" your brain around it. The common statement being." I am at a loss for words..." In the endorphin fueled glow  of Love, there seems to be some kind of heated fluid that is drowning all reason. Then, my friend, you have experience what the Two of Cups alludes to! However, being a purity, from a cyclic united dimension of conscious and unconscious (Sun and Moon) energy, after time, as the tides of the Sea, it will pick up detritus from our culturally "shipwrecked" brain, and slowly progress to a Four of Cups, as the suit develops. Therefore the Second Law of  Thermodynamics comes into play, and "...All things proceed from order to disorder" and entropy slowly degrades the Mystery, with words of fear-based reason and the pink clouds of "the dream" fade away. Just like Astral trips or dreams slowly fade from our brain.

The Two of Cups, is also called the Lord of Love under Will; which is its true meaning where Will is Spirit and not some egoistic possession of the brain. The Two of Cups shows the harmony of the Universal Female and the Universal Male, radiating an intensity of joy and  ecstasy that washes away any and all concern; where "will to be" becomes "I AM ME"! It is The Love, that connects us all together as One, while the massive flow of this connectivity to All, flows through the Union of Two. Such esoteric power, of the union of the unconscious and conscious, may explain why it seems so overpowering to individual reason.

The Jungian 2 of Cups: Adventure, represents a wide range of experiences for the individual as well as "new love" in a relationship. Adventure signifies, conditions outside of normal or daily mundane existence and often beyond the control of the individual.
Commonly chosen adventures are usually traveling to a foreign land, experiencing different foods and cultures or it may be a hot but brief sexual encounter, as depicted by the Fire in the Cups. Therefore, a situation may be planned or an exhilarating, "border stretching" surprise.

These two cups represent two considerations:
  1. There is a great heightening of sensation and/or feelings are unusually sensitive.
  2. There is no security in this unpredictable experience, which maybe exciting and safe or could be dangerous trouble at home or the workplace.

Hence, as in any adventure, this two of cups, represents lack of certainty about what will happen next or how the situation will be resolved. Moreover, the situation is unique to the individual and to their past experience.

When the Two of Cups card is thrown for the querent,
 it implies:
  • Love, marriage, and pleasure.
  • Some say, warm friendship, but that is a weak statement for such an overwhelming heat, so it's more like an intertwining, of harmony, mirth, subtlety, pleasure, and a sometime dash of folly that seems to bind us in mystery and sensation of a "deeply Warm" friendship that radiates from the galactic core.
  • This is an ecstasy that only the True Union of the Feminine and the Masculine can produce.
  • Romance.
  • Harmony, Love, marriage, pleasure, Warm Friendship, mirth, and subtlety.
  • It is about human love on a large scale.
  • It also is a 2 week or 2-month card, representing the accumulation of the above emotions in that time period.
  • Soul mates have found each other or will within 2 months.
If the Cards accompanying the Two of Cups are all ill defined, than this card represents, dissipation, waste and silly action.

  •  In the Thoth Deck Tarot, ill dignity and well dignity, are decided by the surrounding cards and there is no significance supplied to up-side-down cards. This being because this is seen by many Qabalists as an act  of disordered deck handling and not an "act of God".
Thank you for your interest, comments and supportive donations. May you live long and prosper!
