In the gematria of the Hermetic Qabalah
, nines are attributed to Yesod
(Foundation) on the Tree of Life,
thus after the incursion into double misfortune (7 & 8's), the current of energy is back on the middle pillar
. Yesod, is the Sephira-seat of the great crystallization of energy , much like the Etheric Body of the Human Aura and is the "fabric that matter is woven from". Although this "weaving" takes place far down the Tree, getting very little vibratory help from the unbalanced spheres Hod and Netzach, Yesod is directly connected to Tiphareth...the highest state of balance possible for Human psyche that is operating physical matter. Therefore, the nines give the full most elemental impact of the idea of Force; The "idea" because Yesod is still in the Formative World of Yetzirah.
Zoroaster--- [ "The number 9 is sacred, and attains the summit of perfection."]
*Rome and Egypt, also had Nine Major Deities.
Four many of us,
luck and happiness seem to go together, making this card a particularly good one as it is ruled by Jupiter, who is the Planet of Good Fortune. Here, we have Jupiter in Pisces, and in watery signs there is a certain amount of illusion, such as, romantic love which requires illusion in order to gestate into full blown passion (dream within a dream) and/or complete satiety. We also know that full satisfaction is merely the matrix for putrefaction, as there is no such thing as absolute rest; another reason why romantic love, fades away into change. Like the bubbles in a good Champagne, left out too long, it all goes flat, leaving a memory of effervescence . So, for most of us, happiness is momentary with out hope of permanence but that rare moment of sensational synchronicity is why it is so fascinating!
Again as stated,
the astrological assignment to this card is Jupiter in Pisces, here the benevolence of Jupiter functions through the Water/Emotion of Pisces effecting happiness and satisfaction in the material world.
Represented here is the happiness of the innocent who has sensual pleasure as Spirit in Being rather than a being looking for pleasure.
For instance, sometimes I just sit, and experience Me, it feels good to do so for the bliss of spirit resides inward rather than outward. (In Qabalah, "inward is" is up and "outward" is down). Often, I have noticed my fellows dashing madly about, with screaming horns, blaring lights and faces set in grimaced hurry. Always going, always running but to where? Most say,"... please I don't have time, I have to go somewhere", which is often called the "pursuit of happiness". Besides the fact that to pursue something implies you don't have it, what they really mean," if I stop the enemy will get me." That enemy they are fleeing from, is not of a race, creed or color, nor is it a sex or responsibility, it is corporeal consciousness's fear of Pain, and/or lack and discomfort, all of which are the many colored shadows of fear of death. The nightmare of mortality has destroyed our sensual dream of utopia and life becomes suffering as dreams of unconscious innocence become human beings seeking happiness outside of themselves; Dreams become people and as reflections of mind, people must become their dreams, even if they are nightmares.
The Dreams of Stars made Earth
, and the Dreams of Earth are myriad in in Her Ocean mind and became alive as plants, insects and animals. Dreams made all living beings, and the Dreams of the Divine I, made He and She; the I Am. The resulting intimacy of Force and Form: the Divine Creative made suns and earths and then "Goddess & God" dreamed of being intimate with their Beautiful Dream Children; the ME, of I AM ME. That creative happiness, is inside of us all.
Our inheritance is that One Mind of the Dreaming Couple who became through the process of I AM ME, the Universe Collective Unconscious-dreaming of itself. Those who know they are the dream of the Divine Creative, living among their creation as "alive being", are very happy because they know that the nightmare of "enemy", you know, the one seeking to destroy our comfort, is merely the trick of ignorance dreaming about one's death rather than moment of I AM Me.
Many of us are taught to not be the "Me" that was already approved of by the Divine Creative, rather, to be a "man made" me, who must seek itself to be approved of by its "masters". Such thinking of the "pursuit of happiness", turns the bright shining Psyche, into a tarnished slave who sells its identity to whomever peddles faux-happiness and/or the "idea of happiness": such as religions, or philosophies, and any amount of "snake oil" salesmen. For to pursue anything, implies lack of that thing.
To lack spirit is impossible. All is Spirit. I am Spirit, as are all of us. Being a "point in time", i.e. entity that is "me", means that the human entity is but a "point in time" for the Infinite Being that I AM. Points in time, are moments of experience, which are greatly needed to produce discernment in thought, emotion and creation! Therefore, happiness is simply being me.
To the Hermetic Qabalist
, this card represents Yesod (Foundation) in Briah (The Mental World). The 9 of cups is a card of emotional balance that is known as "pleasure in being yourself". Happiness is our natural creative-state whereas, unhappiness is a state of unnatural fear and perverted creation; an artificial fear, invented to drive us forward pulling the Chariots of Greed that our "masters ride".
I love this card, for it reminds me to stop and feel the beauty of being me. For only then can a smile of delight open my eyes to the beauty all around me and as me. I AM the Happiness that Mastered Sensuality! I AM ME.
The Jungian Tarot-9 of Cups: Vacillation,
represents the psychological problem of the free flowing of thoughts, ideas, of emotional inner pictures of experiences, that maybe directed from the outside. This may mean that this outside experience is being controlled by others, causing terrible insecurity and inability to focus thought clearly; a sense of purposelessness in one's life. Seemingly, this card is focused on the negative emotions.
However, if a free flow of consciousness is intentionally invoke and perfectly controlled it becomes quite a different matter and shows a mystical and meaningful diminishing of focus on the personality that results in a purposeful bond with the unconscious; the "secret lover" of the consciousness.
Symbolically this card refers to the phases of the moon and to water, both of which are of the Mother. In fact, in Jungian terms this card represents the process of which the mother teaches the son to meditate effectively; the unconscious teaching the consciousness to focus inward.
The 9 of cups, when thrown in divination:
- Is about a full and happy life that should continue.
- Is complete success and fulfillment of wishes. (We know wishes to be dreams).
- We are reminded to look into the Rainbow Mirror and delight in our beautiful reflection of many colors.
- Contentment and Satisfaction.
- Everything looks and feels "rosy".
- The querent, is enjoying self-esteem and inner joy; Flowing feelings of inspiration and joy.
- The dull thunk in this chiming joy, is that this is temporary, as Change is the stability of the Universe; "the cat's away, so the mice can play", kind of moment.
- Before reason takes over, and finds the logical points of survival thinking that messes up or mitigates "unmitigated joy".
