Tarot Card Comparisons: The Thoth Tarot-Queen of Disks & The Jungian Tarot-Queen of Pentacles: The Secretive Mother.

The Tarot of EliThe Third Sephiroth, which rules the Queens, is shown on the Tree of Life as Binah, and means: Understanding. For Wisdom (Chokmah), only once understood, can be made into form (Knowledge).
The four Threes, and the four Queens of Qabalistic Tarot are ruled by Binah.  Therefore, to Understand the Queen of Disks, one must have at least an elementary Knowledge of Binah.

Binah's symbols are:

  • The Yoni
  • the Triangle
  • the Cup
  • and the Hebrew letter-Heh/He
Her planet is Saturn and Her color is Black. She is the Dark Womb, before form, and as such she is known as the "will to form". Light is born of Her, out of Understanding of I AM.

  1. She is the Supernal Mother.
  2. The organizer and counterbalance of Chokmah.
  3. She is the Requiter.
  4. The dark Sterile Mother-The Crone.
  5. She is the bright fertile Mother.
  6. She is also the Virgin (High Priestess) of which no man has ever bedded. For she created the "Sexual" but is not of it.
  7. She is the Great Sea-The Mari.
  8. She is the Blood: The Great Whore/ The Babylon/The Scarlet Woman.

The Principle symbol of Binah, is the Yoni, a Sanskrit word for female vagina. In Tarot, shown as a chalice or cup. I know her as, "The womb with a view", indicating that she is the "all seeing" Force of Form, from which all Life emerges. This Great Womb, is known to every culture, with many names. She is the completion of the Upper Supernal Triangle, which began as a Point, in Kether, and a Line in Chokma and a Triangle in Binah.
Now before you get all Victorian, and shudder at the concepts of  sexuality, think upon this:
The Primary Female, Binah, stands at the head of the Pillar of Severity . While the Primary Male Sephira is Chokma and he stands at the head of the Pillar of Mercy. This is because as Time/Death, the Mother shows no mercy! Only the Father (Creative Reason) can show "mercy" because his authority is and illusion and cannot stop the building of; nor cessation of Form, just our "painful reaction to it"!

The Qabalistic definition of sexuality is about qualities rather than static forms of sex. The Soul is ultimately hermaphrodite.
The Male quality is also called Mercy because it is unrestricted, energy ejaculated outward; Electric. The Female qualities of Energy are restrictive, thus form is made out of energy-in-motion, a type of oppression we call Magnetic. Thus a Severe limiting quality is applied: How else are you going to build an atom, let alone hold together a "cloud of spinning protons" that is the form of everything?

The fact that our concepts of gender are insufficient to describe the subtleties of polarities and interactive energy in this Universe is shown throughout history. For instance, The Goddess Isis, is the key figure for Binah. Yet, the male Gods Chronos and Saturn are also attributed to this Sephira. Here, we can see the Dark side of Time, as Saturn, heavy and gloomy and as Chronos who symbolizes Time...yes Time is the Greatest Predator of All living things. Thus we have the Crone image of Binah.

Yet this isn't all, for beneath Binah on the Pillar of Severity we find the God Mercury in Hod and at the base of The Pillar of Mercy, we find the Goddess Venus in the Sephira Netzach.
Therefore, the anthropomorphism of the qualities of Intelligent Energy, binds us to Sexual figures as energy is at once expressed and then at once confines.  By understanding the 1st Law of Thermodynamics, you may see the problem of sexing the qualities of energy.  The 1st Law states: "There is only one Energy that cannot be created nor destroyed, only transformed (and Transmitted)." These Transmissions and Transformations, are caused by Qualities of expression-he and repression-She. I find it best to say that She is Magnetic and He is Electric. Thus, the value statements of the mundane are not involved in any misunderstanding. Then there is the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics which states: "All things proceed from order to disorder" (All things die): From Chaos (Pure energy), to Order (Wisdom + Understanding= Knowledge, the formula of Form), back to the "Dark Sea of Chaos".

So the restrictive nature of Will to Form (Binah-Understanding)) is a discipline imposed on the ejaculation/expression of Chokma (Wisdom). At the same time She is the Great Unconscious Sea from which all life (Knowledge/Daath) emerges and returns.

Binah is described in the Qabalistic Mysteries as "The Dark Robe of Concealment", the Great Dark Sea. In the Golden Dawn texts, She is described thus: "In Binah is thick darkness which yet veileth the Divine Glory in which all colors are hidden, wherein is mystery and depth and silence, and yet it is the habitation of the Supernal Light." Many us also know that "our dark-side" resides in the Unconscious and that "Supernal light" is Dark Energy.
Hence, the " Brightly Dark" Fertile Mother, Binah gives life by restriction---the First Law of Form. And as Law giver she is the Dark Sterile Mother of Death as well. This duality is found in Yesod--The Moon, who reflects the "illusion" of Sunlight into Malkuth-the material plane and then cycles into darkness. Mythology has given us the Bright Moon-Diana and the Dark Moon-Hecate, one is the adverse of the other. One is the foundation of Form, Hecate, and the other is the brightly lit house/temple of Form, Diana.

However, Binah is not a "belief system", which is understood as religion, for She is also called the "Parent of Faith" in the Qabalistic mysteries. Thus, she is an organization of discipline behind faith...a Sanctifying Intelligence, as Paul Foster Case named her in his text, THE THIRTY TWO PATHS OF WISDOM.  Therefore she is known as the Parent of the organized disciplines of reason, science, and intellectualism.
The Qabalistic Thoth Tarot- Queen of Disks represents the Watery part of Earth and the function of that element as Mother. She is also "Grandmother River" to certain Native Nations.

In the Zodiac She rules from the 21st degree of Sagittarius to the 20th degree of Capricorn and represents the Highest aspect of Passivity/or Magnetic Force in Repose. As a psycho- physical union, we may notice that just by sitting by a calmly flowing river, we can feel  Inner peace flowing through our desert landscape of worry and fear. We become re-balanced and centered again by the Magnetic Flow of the Great Mother. This is the very essence of our Form and brings back the feeling of paradise that form gives Spirit.  Grand- Mother River is a great Lover of Being! She is the river of Psychic-Magnetism, that forms all light into beings.

There is a lot to interpret on this Thoth Deck Court Card, as she is enthroned on vegetation (magnetic force in repose-- is "Form") and is looking at a river flowing in the background (Her other name as "life giver") bringing life to the sandy desert as an Oasis that is springing up along the River's winding path.

The Goat standing on a sphere, refers to the dogma of the Great Work as fertility (The expansion and liberation of life.) The Helmet she wears is of coins and/or disks (wealth), and upon it are the Great Spiral Horns of the Markhor (symbolizing the Dual Sexual Serpent Force). Her staff is topped by a Crystal Cube (Three dimensional Hexagram of the Universe of Form)  and in her left curved arm and hand, is the Spiral decorated Disk/shield. Everything in creation is a spiral creation better known a "circles upon circles".

All this symbology represents the Ambition of matter to participate in The Great Work and/or Creation.
Most of which has been somewhat explained in the presentation of Binah.

The Jungian Tarot-Queen of Pentacles: The Secretive Mother, represents the Jungian Archetype of the "controlling mother".
Here we have a Personality that is:
  • Economical to the extreme.
  • Ever cautious about money. Never paying out more than is absolutely minimally necessary.
  • Extremely private and is ever-wary of letting people into her private world.
  • Selfish person who feels that the goal of wealth and power justifies the means.
  • Her desire for control, is the reasoning behind the great held secrets of her thoughts and feelings; about personal life and business.
  • This unrelenting desire for control, is also from a deeply ingrained feeling of insecurity; a borderline paranoia.
  • Extremely astute business woman.
  • A very good mother and provider.
  • At her worst: untrustworthy and the source of devious plots, and plans that generate bad feelings among friends and co-workers.

The Archetype personality (and person) symbolized by this card is endowed with:
  • The quiet and serene qualities of power.
  • They are indeed ambitious, as water is ambitious which is to say they calmly go about their work.
  • They have immense wealth of affection, kindness, and greatness of heart.
  • They are not usually intellectual, but instinct and intuition serve their needs just fine.
  • Having the qualities of being, hard working, practical, quite, domesticated they are also unassumingly lustful even to the point of "kinkiness" as they revel in the sensual fertility of their demeanor.  However, this can lead to the Bacchanalian abuse of alcohol and even drugs finding them useful  in getting outside themselves and/or the mental servitude of their cultural minds, into the Happy frivolity of surrounding Nature.
When this card is Ill Dignified:
  • This personality type can be dull, servile, foolish drudges rather than workers.
  •  Life for them is purely robotic and they can't seem to rise above their appointed lot.
The general advice of this card:
  • Is to go forward quietly without overt attacks upon existing situations, i.e. go with the quiet natural flow of your personality in all situations.
