Thoth Tarot & comparisons

Tarot Card Comparisons: The Thoth Tarot-4 of Disks: POWER & The B.O.T.A. Tarot- 4 of Pentacles.

The Tarot of EliIn the Hermetic Qabalah and Tarot, the Fours represent: solidification and manifestation and are attributed to Chesed (mercy). The fours are "below the Abyss" and express the Rule of Law (Laws of Physics etc.).

The Thoth Tarot Deck- Four of Disks, represents Chesed (Mercy) establishing the Universe in three dimensions (4th dimension is Time), that is below the Abyss.

Here, the Sun is in Capricorn, the sign in which the Sun is reborn. Basically this means that the generating idea is established in its full material sense.

The Disks are shown as large, square and solid, representing a fortress comprised of the Four Elements of Metaphysics (Fire, Water, Air and Earth). We know from history, that Fortresses are to keep Law and order by constant authority and a vigilant defense.

Though seemingly stationary, the Disks revolve due to the fact that the Sun is the "dead center" of the engineer; and Capricorn is the point where the "Sun turns Northward".
Now the word, engineer, may have left you confused, but the 4th Sephirotic Being- Chesed,  is also known as the "engineer or architect". Also, what may confuse one is that the Fortress with a moat is considered a Womb, for it is a restrictive container. The Greatest Engineer is "The Womb with a View", or The Divine Feminine Principle. In Yi King, the Sun in Capricorn is represented as the Second hexagram, Khwan, which is the Female Principle. The student may wish to compare Khwan, to the English word Queen, Anglo-Saxon Cwen, Old Mercian Kwoen, all of which are The Female Principle of the Divine Creative. As in most of the Hermetic Tarot, there are layers of understanding, that require diligent pursuit.

To reiterate,The THOTH FOUR OF DISKS: Power equals
[Pentacles in other decks]
...the condition of assured material gain, and earthly power completed but nothing beyond. (Waite).

Here we have a fortress made by the grounding of Chesed (mercy)in Assiah, the Material world. Held by constant authority and vigilance, where a type of Law and order holds the Four Alchemical Elements in balance.

Fire (Spirit), Air (mind), Water (emotions) and Earth, are all centered around material security and in doing so "nothing ventured, nothing gained", becomes a problem of the stasis resulting from the limiting factor of comfort. However,  be assured that in the future, stasis will be removed by the Greater Spiritual Self (A Tower Moment) to keep things moving.   But for now things look under control and sitting back and enjoying material security seems justified. Here we  also have gift, legacy and inheritance.

Astrologically we have Sun in Capricorn which assures the light and warmth of success but nothing beyond the moment.
Therefore, the Thoth 4 of Disks is representative of the Rational Mind in total control of creative energy for material wealth; boundaries against change are erected and the illusion of security is enjoyed.

Now this feeling of benevolent strength, is indeed wonderful but we must also invest in the motion of wealth and send it via The Law of Attraction into prosperity, as prosperity is spreading your wealth around by spending it; therefore, attracting even more wealth. Hence, being flexible with your wealth is recommended.  Therefore, this card reminds us that damming a river can secure water, but if we don't leave room for flow, we stifle the prosperity all around us for a false sense of security. This easily becomes Avarice and blockages of thought, empathy and in-action shall naturally follow from excessive devotion to materialistic rewards.

However, if the drawbridge of our mind, (seen on card) is open for "outside" traffic we can make something tangible and take concrete steps towards creating security in the physical world that actually enhances that security for others as well.  So when all is examined, this card represents a positive with a caveat of caution ; a kind of  " good for you", that can only keep being good if you expand it to "good for others" as well.  The draw bridge is down and the gate open on this illustration of the 4-of Disks, for we must allow flowing change in order to really stay Secure in our power.
To those who know that the number 4 is also assigned
to the Secret Name of God, Tetragramaton and also relates to the 4th Female Principle of the Scarlet Woman, Maid, Mother and Crone being the first 3, there would seem to be a deeper occult meaning to this card. However, this is not so. For as Waite stated:...the condition of assured material gain, and earthly power completed but nothing beyond. (Waite).
Earthly Power, is the Ability to Work one's ideas into material wealth and nothing beyond.
The B.O.T.A. Tarot, 4 of Pentacles, places 4 earth colored pentacles in a square. This implies solidity and security, but nothing else. However, the Builders of the Adytum, are an Hermetic Qabalah order, and therefore, the Thoth Tarot meanings apply, even if they are not illustrated.

Unlike Lady Freda Harris (the artistic element of the Thoth Tarot) and A.Crowley, Dr. Paul Foster Case, applied very little attention to the small cards. I find this to be a common problem with many Tarot designers. Spiritual focus, seems to be main consideration, and Spirit operates in subtle ways as shown in the Major Cards.  However the fact that the small cards are being objective, manifested principles, I find that the small cards are of a great if not major interest; they are the "in your face" events of the sensual life of the body and therefore, Very important to the being experiencing them as physical principles! My advice is to extensively know the small cards for Spirit overcoming their activity is unlikely in the mundane human. Only the most, aware that they Are Spirit: i.e. Life who makes "alive", rather than a human being, can change the operation of the laws of the mundane world. Chesed, has a good grip on the Laws of Matter, and isn't easily dissuaded and most certainly not by those limited to brain material as a state of self-consciousness.

When the 4 of Disks card is thrown during a reading, it represents:

  • 4wks or 4months of monetary gain and influence, A present arriving in that time period.
  • Assured material gain, success, rank, dominion, earthly power completed and going no further than earth.
  • This is an Earthly material wealth as boundary card.

Now if ill dignified, the meaning could be:

  • prejudice, covetous, suspicious, careful and orderly, but discontented.
  • Very little enterprise or originality.
  • More like imprisoning oneself in order to be "safe". Again, dignity is shown by the accompanying cards.

Thank you for your interest, comments and supportive donations. May you live long and prosper!
