The Thoth Tarot-SEVEN OF DISKS : FAILURE
[Pentacles in other decks]
Astrologically this card is Saturn in Taurus which indicates a great deal of work with very little reward.
To the Qabalist,
this is Netzach in Assiah, the influence of the 7th Sephira-Victory in the Material
World....but this is very little victory after extreme effort.
In other words the rewards aren't worth the effort. So this card seems
to be as all Sevens, which means very little good to be gained in the
material world from continued emotional and mental effort.
On the Qabalistic Tree of Life of the Hermetic Qabalah,
Sevens of Tarot are attributed to Netzach (victory) which is very low
down on the Tree of life. This position on the Tree represents a doubling of the unbalanced nature of
conscious energy, as consciousness is now descended deeply into illusion
while engaged in a frantic struggle with self-identity.
The 7th Sephira-Netzach
pertains both to Venus and Earth, and the Heavenly Beauty of Venus is
now debauched by Matter. The four Sevens bring no comfort as they are
the denigration of each element, exposing the utmost weakness in every
Since this card is more about fear of failure
than failure itself, it reminds us that trying to defeat our own self-conscious fear
is what is holding us to a snails pace, if any pace at all, towards our
Fear is not to be defeated, as that just
means you are using your own emotional force against a thought you are creating. Rather Fear is
to be understood and transformed by knowledge; scientifically, being focused on the issue, as a type of magnifying
glass so that you can solve the slightest error in action, rather than focused on survival thinking, making one blind to the details. Again, Failure is not the problem, it took Edison over 999
failures to make a light bulb---but failure did not stop the invention
of the successful one thousandth try!
Rather, it is our own fear of being less than the challenge, that tricks us and leaves us to believe we are incapable.
Hence, The 7 of Disks reminds us that we must keep on our projects, they will be completed by perseverance with in 7wks or 7months.
The aware consciousness
knows that fear is only for the sharpening of the senses so that we can
pay attention to the details; it is not for avoidance. Therefore
failure tells us what didn't work and to not stop working on solutions!
To listen to our fear of failure, as if something serious, is to
abandon labor and sink everything into sloth.
The Seven of Disks
reminds us that we are fooling ourselves by fearing discomfort (fear of
failure, fear of discomfort and/or vulnerability are all offshoots of "Fear of Death") we become
inactive, passive, and fallen. The Fear of failure states," it is
better to lay here on the damp earth of wept for dreams than stand up
and pry your feet from the resistant mud of comfort". [Eli]
Again, what I say to my own self-conscious ( The conscious of the Soul-creates self-conscious of the body), consciously, is that, " If you wish to speak to me you must stand for I'll not kneel to your weakness!"....I
then slog on to a new day where success awaits me. Thanks to the 7 of
Disks-Failure, I am reminded that its not far now and that I Am Creative Action not reaction! I also tell my body, "your still breathing
so get on with it!"
Physical failure, is
labor thwarted, by psychosomatic reaction and everything is sunk in the dark mire of a survival fantasy. Hence, this card represents a
pause in the garden of financial, health, and physical relationships.
There is also fear of failure and fear of success which is generated by
negative past experiences.
Therefore, to emotionally fear is to
constrict energy normally used to move forward and to obfuscate the direction it is being sent which is against one's own movement. Hence the paradox of Fear
is that it is a construct of one's own creative energy gone against the motion of the intelligence. Our fear of
discomfort, is our worst enemy here.
What many of
us don't realize is that we are both Force and Form (The study of Force
and Form is the Qaballah) and that our Spiritual and/or Mental Force (Psyche)
runs our physical form (soma). Therefore, to think ill of ourselves is to
perform ill as a form. Since the most powerful Force of our Mental Self
is Imagination, you are held to no actions of the past if you are
willing to imagine a new action such as, imaging yourself -Well, or wealthy (money
raining down all around you) etc. and you will set a force filled course
of prosperity for your physical form. Make a forceful chant such as,"
North, South, East and West, my prosperity flows to me which ever way is
best!"; do this morning, noon and night or the instant you worry about
income. By taking action to change your mind, you are being Spirit in
motion. Spirit is action; a forceful energy-in-motion, while the "lizard
brain" is a fear based survival mind who reacts to environmental
present with past fearful reactions and in being bound by such error, calls those reactions,
present emotions. Above all things know thyself! You are a Psycho-dynamic- Force that operates a Power-Tool--known as "your body"; the body doesn't operate you, as a psyche!
Take a long look
at this Thoth card.
Its astrological sign is Saturn in Taurus. The planet
Saturn is symbolic of constricted, restricted and/or the feeling of
Taurus is representative of productivity and
achievement. The two together tell us that our productivity and
achievement are being restricted and limited by our fear of failure. This
aspect of Saturn and Taurus can also be seen in the coins as the helmet
symbol is Saturn and the bull is Taurus. Hence, predicting a feeling of
failure that interferes with our mundane financial situation. The
Helmet is also a symbol of a conscious constriction of which fear is
What I have most often found is that it is the individual's Fear of Failure
that is the stumbling block to success here and that somewhere in their
emotional past the idea that they were/are unworthy of success, is an
underlying personality construct. Other people have reacted so
emotionally to loss, that gain itself is a threat as they might lose it
and therefore will not dare to desire it.
This card also indicates a loss
of capacity to inspire
ourselves or others. Yet there are contradictory meanings here since
this is a pause in the force of our creativity. In a more positive note, this pause could also be just
waiting for the fruition of our efforts and is a time of repose and
waiting for results as the past is purged by putrefaction; However, this does depend on the supporting cards in a reading. Seeds of new growth may be planted here and the
querent may be waiting for a better and more rewarding path to be
The Thoth Tarot- 7 of Disks is also about putrefaction
which is the alchemical and therefore natural force necessary for purification.
the number 7, Netzach-Victory (7th Sephira on the Tree of Life) has a natural
enfeebling effect as a precursor to change; However, in this case it is made even more enfeebled
by the influence of Saturn in Taurus.
This cards interesting disk emplacement
is in the gemantic figure Rubeus
, the most ugly and menacing of the 16 figures. ( 777-And other Qabalistic writings of Aleister Crowley).
Therefore there is an atmosphere of
blight about the card's coloration and since Saturn in Taurus brings very little
gain with a great deal of effort, it is blighted in many ways To carry
on this idea. Hence, the back ground of the card suggests cultivation and
spoilage and Netzach's four colors are blotched with indigo and reddish
orange, which again promotes the concept of spoilage ( the reddish
orange, on the card is faded by processing). Saturn's disks are lead in
color and suggest bad money.
*NOTE: In the Golden Dawn, B.O.T.A.,
and Rider-Waite Tarot Decks, the Disks of the Thoth Deck are known as
Pentacles. In other decks they are often shown as coins.
The B.O.T.A. Tarot-7 of Pentacles, although of the Hermetic School of the Builder's of the Adytum, doesn't employ the image of Rubeus. The pentacles are just displayed as the lower parts of the Qabalistic Tree of Life.
Therefore, the Failure of Matter is seen as a positive power of change. The Power of Limitation, is Transformation, and therefore, never is a form permanent.

When the 7 of Disks is thrown during a reading it implies that:
7 weeks or 7 months, the querent (the one receiving the reading) will
experience or has experienced, unprofitable speculation, and employment
- Little gain for much labor leaving promises for success unfulfilled.
- Hopes deceived and crushed as apparent fortune is lost.
- This is also the Alchemical putrefaction, a process necessary to produce the purest element.
- Cultivation of land, with little gain.
- Sometimes this card suggests slight and isolated gains with no fruits resulting.
- Depending on the dignity of the accompanying cards, each being positive in nature, then the 7 of Disks-Failure, can also mean: Honorable work undertaken for the love of it and without a desired reward.
the next 7 weeks or 7 months, the more rewarding path will be
discovered and the period of waiting is over, or you will have to
confront your fear of failure in the next 7 weeks or 7 months in order
to plant anew and reap a more generous harvest in your future.
is time to move through old fears and self defeating thoughts of past
failures whether they have been experienced in the past 7 weeks, 7
months or when you were 7 years old.
- Fear is constricted energy focused on a point of I Am...I Am
is our inherited God Voice within our Super-conscious. It declares the
direction of our energy such as, I Am sad...I Am happy...I Am poor..I AM
wealthy..In the infinite realm of possibilities, I AM is the foundation
of all creation and creation is a restriction of energy to form a
"point in time". Which we are as a self-conscious! Since you have been given the God-like
freedom to declare yourself any way you like...repeating concepts of
failure tell your Greater Self that you demand failure as an expression
of your likeness! Knowing this:
- It is recommended that for the
next 7 weeks or 7 months that your repeat declarations of Wealth. How
about; "I Am The Will and the Way. I Am the Wealth and I own the Day!".
Say this at least 7 times a day for 7 weeks or 7 Months. I've been doing
it now for the past 7 years and my days flow in a joyous dance of
discovery. I highly recommend that you remember yourself as a I AM Magic
Sorcerer from the Source of all Creation who has been given the power
of emotional focus to create your reality. This is a great power; The Power of Limitation---use
