Tarot Card Comparisons: The Thoth Tarot- 8 of Disks:PRUCENCE & The B.O.T.A. Tarot- 8 of Pentacles.

The Tarot of EliThe Thoth Tarot-EIGHT OF DISKS: PRUDENCE.

Astrologically this card is  Sun in Virgo; hence, the planetary aspect here is a very practice one that tends to cause concern with small details.

Qabalistically, 8 of Disks (8 of Pentacles in other decks) is Hod (splendor) in Assiah (the material world). Prudence in the Material world is no great virtue, for this is the tendency to focus only on the small details while ignoring the bigger picture.

In the Hermetic Qabalah, The Four Eights of Tarot are attributed to Hod (eighth Sepiroth--Splendor) on the Tree of Life. Since Hod is in the same plane as the Sevens (Netzach-victory) the same weaknesses and/or defects that are in the sevens will apply. Yet, in a sense, the alleviation of the Sevens weakness is also being applied in the Eights. One might say that the mischief has been done and there is an action against it---much like white blood cells attacking a intruder in the blood stream; not a total cure but a beginning in that direction.

The Eight of Disks, which is called PRUDENCE, is a great deal better than the eight of swords or the eight of cups. This is because in the purely material world of Disks, and in money matters, there is a certain strength gained by doing nothing at all. Sometimes, "putting away for a rainy day" is best. Since,The Eight of Disks is attributed to the Sun in Virgo it is also the card of husband-man and/or husbandry. One can sow the seed but do little more than sit back and await the harvest.

As in all eights, a certain amount of calculation is suggested, and it the Eight of Disks this is not necessarily a noble idea as it is like fixing a fight and then betting on the outcome. This is a very congenial person, on the outside, but who is nobodies fool on the inside.  Hence, practicality with a hint of villainy. However, if linked up with "higher" cards, this is the impeccable path of a Master, who takes their development seriously and examines each step, with out haste. In the realm of matter, a master craftsman comes to mind.

The Divinity meaning of this card is, skill, prudence, and over- carefulness about small things, at the expense of the great.

However on the positive note, the 8 of Disks also shows the abilities to work steadfastly on new projects, and proceeding to others later on.  Often this is called the Master Craft Card, since it is about focused will, skill with energy and material matters which is the kind of focused state needed for meditations. It is about the craftsmanship of one who thinks of the work itself rather than the goal of reward.

Crowley's Disks are traditionally Pentacles or Coins, in other decks. However, since the disks represent a whirling force, disks then become an appropriate symbol, something on  which Crowley and I both agree. Disks must be stabilized by a spinning motion, a circular rotational force, in order to hit their mark. Even the atoms of rocks are spinning in a centrifugal manner, so when representing the earthly powers, the spinning of the Disk, with its internal spin best shows force and form as one presence in the crystalline light.

To Reiterate: In the Hermetic Qabalah, The Eight of Disks-Prudence, is known as Hod in Assiah; the material World. The Sun is in Virgo, therefore the Fiery Creativity of the Sun is held to an attention to details. The angels of this Decan are; Akaiah and Kehethel.
Virgo is noted to be a very practical sign which tends to cause over concern with small details.
Because this is an eight, any gain that prudence gives is easily dispersed making Prudence no great virtue.
The message in divination, is that of skill, prudence, and over-carefulness about small things, at the expense of the larger. But because the 8th Sephira- Hod is represented by Mercury and Mercury is exalted in Virgo, there is also predilection for intelligent loving, involving material matters such as, agriculture, artistic craftsmanship, and engineering.
The Ruler ship of the Sun in Virgo suggests birth, as well, thus the disks are arranged in the Gemantic figure Populus. These disks are then shown as flowers of a Great Tree, rooted solidly in fertile lands.

The number 8 also, when laid on its side, is the symbol for infinity which is the 0, twisted into Two zeros which is also the symbol for the Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine, inseparable and indivisible and/or the Divine Creative. This twisting of one into two is shown on the Thoth card as a twisted central trunk. In modern physics the eight is the symbol of the Mobius loop.
So there is also an deeply spiritual aspect peculiar to the figure 8; it is O, the symbol of "without end" twisted into what looks to be two separate zeros joined at the cross roads; an intercourse of opposites that produces all form from force. Force is merely matter released, while material form, is force contained. Therefore, Electric contained by Magnetic, equals Form.

This "lazy eight" is also known as the symbol for Infinity and/or the Magi symbol of the Lemnistrate ( Latin: lemniscus) which is shown as the Figure 8 laying on its side (See the traditional Magician Card Trump #1 of the B.O.T.A. Tarot). To the Tibetan Tantric this is the symbol of Yab Yum which translates to "Goddess/God face to face". What is known to the Magi, is that the figure 8 is how the One became male and female who together form the Divine Creative. By one energy twisting upon itself, the concept of male and female---i.e., Goddess/God and/or opposites was created. It could be said that Electric male force and Magnetic Female Force came from God's introspection of "I AM"...which implies "I" and "other than I" and/or existence of opposite concepts of the same One.

The B.O.T.A. Tarot-8 of Pentacles, illustrates the most use symbol of the occult stamped on earth colored disks.
The Pentacles, are arranged in the same gemantic symbol of Populus, as the Thoth Tarot, but without the central trunk that is a twisting of the energy polarities of "He and She".

In fact, not much is depicted on the B.O.T.A.  small/minor cards.
This could be because, the Builders of the Adytum, offer a correspondence course, which explains the Hermetic Qabalistic ideology as understood by Dr. Paul Foster Case, their founder.
Or it could be the fact, that the objective world is of little concern to them. Both Crowley and I find this to be a grave error. For it is certain that the Invisible Forces (subjective) influence the Forms (objective worlds) but the objective world is also about the equilibrium of objects and force which must be understood, if one is to have a fulfilling life experience. The Small cards are about the intelligence found in Form, and how it can influence the subtle aspects of unconsciousness. All "force and form" is a figure eight for as one gives the other receives, and as one receives it gives experience!

When the 8 of Disks is thrown during a reading, the querent:
  1. Is in a moment of creative birth of 8 weeks or 8 months, requiring the practice of physical caution, carefulness, and prudence.
  2. A type of physical wisdom radiating from a inner place of balance and integration.
  3. Making sure that all the bases are covered; every "t" crossed and and every "i" dotted.
  4. Making intelligent choices so that the material world more closely conforms with one's needs.
  5. The possibility of turning a talent or skill into a profession.
  6. Skill in work with energy and forms, such as fingers working on a manipulative substance.
The negatives would be focusing to tightly on the small details and not seeing the big picture!
  • That Prudence is a short term focus on the small details, baby steps rather than a long term goal.
  • After about 8 wks or 8 months, there will be good influences to start a utilizing your learning as a skill in business or career.
  • This is a card of "talent" (which means hard work on the details) and shows the possibility of turning a skill  or talent into a profession, or money earned.
  • The 8 of Disks card is about turning all that learning the details, into beginning a profession; from student to  beginning Master Craftsmanship.
  • 8 of Disks also calls for caution, for Prudence overdone, resists change and the ability to move with the changes, is success but to resist change can only bring failure.
  • The important message here is to  at first pay attention to the details and then focus on the big picture to insure success.

As a man who has devoted over 10 years to the superbly exact Thoth deck, I need to state that I utilize reversal seldom. And still, after all that, unless the card is encompassed by greatly negative cards of repudiating suites, I don't much think of it as. What's more, the way the card faces when set into position is not even a variable for me.

Hi Corporate. In the Hermetic Qabalah, the reversal of a card is meaningless, unless you consider it as sloppy card handling. The surrounding cards do indeed designate ill or well. Thank you for your interest and comments. May you live long and prosper.
