Tarot Card Comparisons: The Thoth Tarot-PRINCE OF DISKS & The B.O.T.A. Tarot-KNIGHT OF PENTACLES.

The Tarot of EliThe Thoth-Prince of Disks: In past blogs, I have stated that Tiphareth is The Central Sun of our conscious energy expression into incarnation, and it is from Tiphareth/Beauty that the Intelligence of the Princes radiate. Tiphareth is called -Beauty, and is as high as our Personal Consciousness can go up the Tree. This state of Consciousness is known in the Mysteries, as the Christ, or Buddha consciousness and it brings the body into a "higher" state of vibratory life force that we know as "unconditional Love". It is the Conscious of Life itself, that brings into self-conscious animation the "alive",
and changing the physiology by doing so. However, because of its higher vibratory nature, only through diligent meditative techniques and ritual divination is this conscious state possible to physically experience.

THE THOTH PRINCE OF DISKS, OF THE HERMETIC QABALAH:
(Also called the Prince of Pentacles, in other Tarot Decks), is the Prince of the Chariot of Earth,
Prince and Emperor of the Gnomes. This Prince is zodiacally attributed to the last Decan of Aries and the first two Decan of Taurus. Making him "active earth-consciousness".

The Prince of Disks is the Air of Earth and/or Specific Air (Rational Mind) of Primal Earth. The Chariot of the Prince of Disks is pulled by the Bull of Taurus, demonstrating this stable attribute of earth itself.

Being Air of Earth, the Prince is Intelligible Earth, as Air is Mind. Thus he brings incredible energy to physical matters. Such intelligent Earth, is the instinctual mind that shows its incredible focus on building, as in bees, ants, etc.
Because the Prince of Disks is so active, his armor is light and nonrestrictive.
  1. On his head is the Bull helmet, reflecting an animal sacred to the earth.
  2. The disk in his hand is an orb resembling a globe, marked in agricultural mathematical symbols.
  3. The orbed scepter, that is surmounted by a cross, is a symbol of the Great Work accomplished. The Great Work being manifesting the Higher States of Conscious Energy, in the lower states of consciousness below, on earth; by physical focus and attention to work.
What many of us don't understand that if you empty your brain of random thoughts, while only focusing on the task at hand, you are meditating! Even a daily commute in your car, with radio off, and doing nothing but "hands on the wheel" driving, while paying absolute attention to traffic, is a meditation! The Prince of Disks intelligence, albeit seemingly slow, knows that multi-tasking, is just another way to do a whole lot of nothing well.

The Prince of Disks, is the Green Man Intelligence of Celtic mysteries, whose job it is to bring forth, from the Earthly element, that Vegetation, which is the sustenance of Spirit itself. The Mother Gaea/ Earth makes the form, he enlivens it and enforces the design.

The Character of the Prince of Disks Archetype, is methodical, competent, ingenious, enduring, trustworthy, cautious, and imperturbable. All the qualities of a very capable manger and a steadfast preserving worker. Very good at horticulture and hard-patient work.

This Princely of Mind and Earth, is ingenious  as he constantly seeks new ways of using common things. Always adapting the circumstance to his slow and methodical purpose. This is to say, that his plans are well thought out making his emotions subdued. Therefore, he may appear insensitive and maybe even dull and slow of wit, but this is because of one's misinterpretation of his mental activity that he won't devote to ideas that he understands to be beyond his expertise.  Simply, the reaction of others to this stalwart character, depends entirely on their temperament and not his.

As stated: In the zodiac, the  Prince of Disks rules from 21degrees Aries to 20 degrees Taurus. The Prince of Disks is known as the Specific Air of Primal Earth.

To a Hermetic Qaballist, this card represents  the intelligence of the Element of Earth. This card has been likened to Merlin of Arthurian legend and/or the Green Man of the druids and even Pan.

Pan's name is a derivation of the word paein, meaning pasture, as well as, being the word for "all" and for "bread" recalling various "All Fathers" who were gods of divine bread, such as Osiris, Adonis, and Tammuz. Like them, Pan was a sacred king who died in fertilizing the earth.

Pan was one of the oldest gods of Greece, being King of the Arcadian Satyrs, the horned and hoofed woodland god par excellence.  He was said to have coupled with the Dionysian Maenads, while also being mated to Athene, Penelope, Selene, and many archaic forms of the Great Goddess.  As one can see, he represents the force of fertility for the earth, as does the Bull image of the Thoth Card Prince of Disks. The Greeks also claimed that the Egyptian solar god Amon-Ra ( 6th Sephira-Tiphareth on the Tree of Life which radiates the Prince of Disks) was the same as Pan. They even called Amon-Ra's holy city Panopolis, "city of Pan", saying it was inhabited by "Pans satyrs".  In fact the holy processions in the City of Pan were called Panoply.

Another interesting fact, is that Pan's sacred drama of death and resurrection was the original "tragedy", from the Greek tragoidos, meaning "Goat Song". This death and resurrection is also later attributed to the "Christos", a later Christian tragedy. The 6th Sephira-Tiphareth of the Qabalah, is the number of the Sun, and therefore the "Christos", that is also responsible for the death and resurrection of Consciousness. Form the self-conscious death to the resurrection of the "higher conscious" (son of god) in the material world. This story of the fertility of Nature, can get extreme ribald, and has often been portrayed so and one can get very acquainted to the "Lustful" male nature of the Green Earth, often know as the "Spermatic" force of Earth.

In retrospect, The Taurus bull pulls thechariot, the Prince holds the Staff of earthly dominion, and an inverted orb that symbolizes  material force grossly applied. He is the Physical Architect and the Pan fertility force of Earth, rather than the Priapic force represented by the Knight of Disks.

The influence of the Divine Feminine is not easily seen in this card's illustration: However, the Divine Feminine is always the Stable Platform and/or Chariot, that the Prince is encompassed by, a metaphor for the encompassing of the consciousness by the unconsciousness, as well as, the yoni encompassing the phallus.

The B.O.T.A. Tarot-Knight of Pentacles, uses the medieval image of a Knight/Prince, whereas, Crowley used the Knights as Kings in the the Thoth Tarot.
Mounted on a rampant charger, the knight of pentacles, holds high the pentacle symbol for the five elements (Spirit, Fire, Water, Air and Earth) surrounded by the circle in earthen colors, signifying the encompassing of the elements in the planet earth.
His suit of armor is violet, and his tack is blues and violets, signifying that he represents the Air of Earth, as does the Thoth Prince.
The Horse is a russet color, showing that he is active earth fertility intelligence.
All that pertains to the Thoth Prince, pertains to the B.O.T.A. Knight as well.  However,  the Knight of Pentacles is in armor, rather than ready for amour, as is the scantily dressed Thoth Prince of Disks. This is because the medieval artists, showed rampant Stallions as a sexual force rather than the human body.

When the Prince of Disks/Pentacles is thrown during a reading, depending on the position and the surrounding cards and
as a personality Archetype whom the Querent will meet or has met:
  • The Prince of Disks represents and ambitious young person who seeks to benefit from changing circumstances.
  • This person is willing to work hard, toiling and striving for a chosen ambition.
  • Enduring, steadfast and persevering bringing to bear great energy to material matters but makes no great effort to understand emotional ideas.
  • This person will also enjoy investigation into the origin of things with a fearless following of clues disregarding possible dangers.

For the Querent, this card implies:
  • An intense focus on security, to feel safe, secure and centered.
  • Working steadily towards goals, knowing exactly what is wanted and singularly focused on getting it.
  • Being responsible, hardworking, and uncomplaining while being deeply rooted to the outer-world and dedicated to practical matters.
  •  Pretty much ignoring the Inner-World.The Prince of Disks implies a Mastery of the fluorescence and fruitification of Air (mind-intelligence) and  Earth (Material Architecture), a kind of magician when it comes to practical matters.
  • Implies issues of physical activity. Such as, body building, muscle tone, sports, and a steel like resolve to move through issues and remove blocks.
  •  The querent is in a kind of Moving meditation, a focus on the material world, experiencing personal balance and productivity.
  • Becoming or is a builder who works steady towards their goals and being singularly focused on establishing security.
  • The querent, is both kind and trustworthy and will complete a long and laborious task, "come hell or high water".
  • There is suggested a Mastery here, of change and harvest procured by knowledge and productivity.
This is a hard card to make negative, the only thought being, that of slowness, and seemingly dull witted.
