Tarot Card Comparisons: The Thoth Tarot- 9 of Cups: Happiness & The B.O.T.A. Tarot- 9 of Cups

The Tarot of EliIn the Thoth Tarot of the Hermetic Qabalah:

The number 9, is the Sephira Yesod [foundation] on the Qabalistic Tree of Life. Therefore, the Thoth 9 of Cups, is Yesod in the Suit of water, and 9, being also the number of the Moon, strengthens Water. Thus the stability is restored to Water.

Since the Nines are attributed to Yesod (Foundation) on the Tree of Life, after the incursion into double misfortune (7&8's), the current of psychic- energy is back on the middle pillar. After its wobbly exclusions to Hod (left hand path) to Netzach (right hand path) , the suit of Water has now returned to the Middle Pillar.

The Nines of the Hermetic Qabalah,  Yesod, is the Sephira-seat of the great crystallization of energy, much like the Etheric Body of the Human Aura where "Bio Protons" are produce,  and  therefore is the "fabric that matter is woven from".

Although this "weaving" takes place far down the Tree, getting very little vibratory help from the unbalanced spheres Hod and Netzach, Yesod is directly connected to Tiphareth...the highest state of balance possible for Human psyche and imagination that is operating physical matter. Therefore, the nines give the full most elemental impact of the idea of Force and Form; The "idea" (Blue Print) because Yesod is still in the Formative World of Yetzirah wherethe construction work goes on, including the "finishing touches" before it is assembled in the material world.

Zoroaster--- [ "The number 9 is sacred, and attains the summit of perfection."]
*Rome and Egypt, also had Nine Major Deities.

Jupiter in Pisces is assigned as the Ruler of the 9 of Cups, thus adding a benediction that is more than sympathetic to Water. This is obvious, since Jupiter is the Planet of Chesed [Mercy] where water/imagination is in it highest manifestation. Plus, Pisces brings out the placidity of Water. Here is True Wisdom fulfilled in Perfect Happiness, i.e. sympathy.
As you can see upon viewing of this card, there are nine cups arranged into a square overflowing and filling one another in sympathetic flow. Here we have the most benevolent aspect of the force of Water....a pleasing state of stable and sparkling emotion.

Since, astrologically, this is  Jupiter in Pisces, here the benevolence of Jupiter functions through the Water/Emotion of Pisces effecting happiness and satisfaction in the Material world; much like the warm sun balancing the warm temperature of a pond.

Represented here is the Happiness of the innocent who has sensual pleasure as Spirit in Being, rather than a being looking for pleasure which is a type of zealotry.
Sometimes I just sit, and experience Me, it feels good to do so as mind and body form a sympathy: A bliss. We have noticed our fellows dashing madly about, with screaming horns, blaring lights and faces set in grimaced hurry much like a zealot pursuing it's god. Always going, always running but to where? Most say,"... away I have to go away or I don't have the time....." What they really mean," if I stop the enemy will get me." That  enemy they are fleeing from, is not of a race, creed or color, nor is it a true responsibility; it is the fear of Pain, lack and discomfort, all of which are the many colored shadows of fear of death. Here Imagination becomes the zealot, who seeks only relief from being mortal and a  nightmare of mortality has destroyed our sensual dream and life becomes suffering as Dreams of Spirit become forms, including human beings; Dreams become people and  as reflections of Mind-Self, people must become their dreams, even if they are nightmares. However, just as a zealot finds happiness in self flagellation, so do many people find happiness, in the amount of suffering they inflict upon themselves. I think we call them "hypochondriacs".

It can be said that,The Dreams of Stars made living forms of light, and the Dreams and/or psychosomatic forms manifested on Earth are, myriad in in Her Ocean mind, that is sympathetically linked to the Sun, her consort.  We can go even more occult here and say that the resulting intimacy of Goddess and God, I AM, made self-identity manifest as suns and earths and then Goddess & God dreamed of being intimate with their Beautiful Dream and created the self-conscious ME, who is but a sensual child of the I AM.

Our inheritance "self imagination" is that of the One Mind of the Dreaming Couple (Unconscious and conscious) who became through the process of I AM ME; the Universe. Those who know they are the Dream of The Divine Dual Creative, alive among their creations, are very happy for they are in sympathy with Creation.

However, self-conscious can be tricked into believing that the pain is from an outside "enemy"; the one seeking to destroy our comfort. This is merely the trick of self-belittling- ignorance brought about by the illusion of men ruling the definitions of "good and bad", "inside/outside" and/or "right and wrong", causing our dream to become fear about "what I ain't", rather than I AM Me. Many of us are taught to not be the "Me" that was already approved of by the Divine Creative, rather, to be a "man made" me, who must seek itself to be approved of by its "masters".  Such thinking is often called the "pursuit of happiness", which turns the bright shining Psyche, into a tarnished zealot-slave who sells its identity to whomever peddles happiness and destroy all that is said to make one unhappy.  For to pursue anything, implies lack of that thing, and those who think lack, fear lack, and must get "the thing"  before anyone else can take the "last one", even if they must destroy the world to do it! Such is a zealot.  For a person who shows zeal, often great zeal, in procuring...including seeking to procure a "god's favor", is a Zealot!

To the Qabalist, this card represents Yesod (Foundation) in Briah (The Mental World) and the initiation of zeal. This is a card of active emotional balance that is known as a pleasure of being yourself and wanting to know more.  A zeal of seeking "Self Knowledge" . In the beginning of  creation, The Divine Collective Unconscious, created Consciousness, both in Sympathy as "Mother/Father", making Happiness a Natural state of Self love, whereas,  unhappiness is a state of  unnatural self- fear; an artificial fear, invented to drive us forward pulling the Chariots of Greed that our "masters of material wealth" ride over the backs of slave labor.

I love this card, for it reminds me to stop and feel the beauty of being me. For only then can a smile of delight open my eyes to the beauty all around me and as me.  I AM the Happiness that Mastered Sensuality! I AM ME... a true sense of self.

The B.O.T.A. Tarot, 9 of Cups: shows an arrangement of silver and blue cups, the colors of the element of Water, of 4 above being reflected as 4 below, with One Upright in the middle.

4 is the number of Manifestation and or a cube. Therefore the above I AM Me of the Divine, is reflected in the below I AM Me of creation.
The one in the middle is the Tiphareth, the Sephira of Beauty, i.e. Sympathy, that brings into harmony the "higher and lower self".

The 9 of cups, when thrown in divination:
  • Is about a full and happy life that should continue.
  • Is complete success and fulfillment of wishes. We know wishes to be dreams.
  • We are reminded to look into the Rainbow Mirror and delight in our beautiful reflection of many colors.
  • The querent is or will be experiencing, complete success, pleasure and happiness for the next 9 weeks, or 9 months.
  • Complete and perfect realization of pleasure and happiness as wishes are fulfilled.
  • There can be some vanity and conceit here, but it is good- natured.
  • This card suggest the querent is high minded and not easily satisfied with small , gossipy, limited ideas.
  • Such a person may be maligned because of their self-assumption but the querent, being of a good generous, sometimes foolish, nature, ...the  malingers tend to look overly critical.
  • The number 9 is also the number of completion. Happiness, is a sensationalizing of success and is a hard one to find any negative connotations for. This is a pleasant card to have in your reading.
