Tarot Card Comparisons: The Thoth Tarot-Knight of Swords & The B.O.T.A. Tarot- King of Swords.

In the Thoth Tarot, the Kings are Knights. The Knight of Swords is called "the fiery part of Air" which may confuse you, but really He represents the violent power of motion applied to mind. He rules from the 21st degree of Taurus to the 20th degree of Gemini.
In the Thoth Tarot, he is a armored warrior knight whose helmet bares a rotating wing and is mounted on a rampaging steed. With both sword and poniard in hand, he is the very idea of Attack. He is the Spirit of the Tempest and is also known in Qaballah as Lord of Winds and Breezes. King of the Elemental Spirits of the Air; the Sylphs and Sylphides.  This is a very Strong masculine mental force whose zodiacal attributes are the last Decan of Taurus and the first two Decans of Gemini.

The Knight of Swords can be compared to the Lightning bolt of an idea absorbing the entire mental- life in concentrated aspiration. There can be Live and Evil here, for the Mind can ignore empathy just by rationalizing.
Will of Taurus-the Bull
and the
Inspiration of Gemini-The Twins,
are applied here. The Knight of Swords represents the True Will (Will to Force) exploding in the mind spontaneously with idea.

What many of us forget or have been indoctrinated to forget, is that True Will is not empathetic, as immortal Spirit has no need for empathy, for it never Dies and in the beginning, the Love of Idea is its first motion. Mortality changes this as those of us Spirit (only One Spirit with many ideas of self)-who wear personas, produce individual collectives call "Souls" and  are fortunate enough to inherit a human body.

After a few "lives"
(Created self-visions of souls) we may know how to empathize with the "living" and with proper love of form, will adjust our ideas to accommodate the expansion and liberation of the living from their poverty of self imposed-definitions, using our unlimited power to identify ourselves. Rather than just erase them with visions of Tempestuous velocity; of immense violence, we shall expand and liberate form and realize the love Spirit has for the flesh.
Therefore, Love of idea without empathy
is a Terrible Tempest of Self-Absorbed Desire, where the Vision is more important than the living, which is the danger of the Knight of Swords persona. Hence, this Card reminds us to take time to love being, for the body human is a Vision of Divine Will-To-Be and must be our
Inner Vision Center, so that we can "feel/see" the violence of our own Ideas, and restructure them to care for the living rather than sacrifice the life of other's to our ideas. Life, is more important than any idea, as it is the Co-operation of the Divine Collective; i.e. a fractal made of all persons.
As before stated, the Upper Supernal Triangle can be compared to the Garden of Eden From here, the male and female polarities of energy balance against each other, evolving into increasing density as they develop  towards the lowest Sephira, Malkuth, on the Tree of Life.

In Qabalistic Tarot, the number Two, Chokmah, symbolizes the union and balance of opposites that underlies all material existence.

Because this equilibrium of opposites begins in Chokmah, which is represented by the Thoth Tarot Knights. This second Sephira is also called the Sephira of  "Perfect Harmony".  While Kether is that which is the "Root" of impetus: Chokmah/Knights is the impetus for all manifestation. The Harmonic Union of opposites supplies that action as the coupling of Chokmah-Wisdom and Binah-Understanding. Binah is Saturn, and Chokmah is the sphere of the Zodiac.

Ultimately Kether is "sexless" for the idea of a dual nature is not formed yet, it is however the " whirling force". Therefore, Chokmah is the idea of Maleness (Electric) and Binah is the idea of Femaleness (Magnetic), and the mating of the Three (Supernal Triangle) "whirls the Electromagnetic Spectrum" into form, through the androgyny of the High Priestess (Key 2 of the Major Arcane). Therefore, the Thoth Knights represent the Archetypal Yod (Divine Masculine) Male Force, while the Binah-Queens, represent the Archetypal Divine Female, the Divine Heh.

Once again our sensual ideas of sexuality do not apply on this Higher Scale of Communion.  Here Maleness is the vital outpouring of electrical energy that is organized, limited or formalized by the magnetic qualities of Female. Thus the Hebrew- Yod is male and the Hebrew- Heh is female, and the resulting offspring is Vau of the Divine Name, Yod-Heh-Vau-Heh, that is attributed to the six lower Sephiroth in which Tiphareth (Beauty) is central.

As you may note, there are many interchangeable symbols in the Hermetic Qaballah that may make it seem more complicated than it is. The essential key is  that the Vital outpouring Energy (Knights), which in intercourse with an organizing force (Queens), produces "something else". For example, red combined with blue, creates purple by the motion of the mixer (Kether). Therefore, opposites joined in balanced harmony, produce something greater than the parents.  This is not possible if exactly the same united with exactly the same, you would only get , exactly the same!

Therefore the Qabalistic Tree of Life originated in the opposition of Chokmah and Binah. However this is not static, any more than male female union on earth is static, there is a constant back and forth motion of growth and movement as the "undercurrent" of the Whirling Force of Kether, personified in the Knight of Swords. This "undercurrent" insures that when a change occurs in one Sephiroth, there is a natural balancing response in its opposite ( often shown as the figure eight). Therefore there is a continual exchange that could be compared to breathing, as the inhale/exhale action that powers Life.

On the Tree of Life, the Uppermost Sephira is Kether, Eheieh ("I Will Be..."), which sets the pattern for all below it. Like an electrical switch that is off, Kether is all potential, while Chokmah is the electrical switch in the On position, the "Will to Force". Thus Chokmah/Knight is function while Kether is potential function.   Kether is a "no-thing" while Chokmah is a function of the whirling  force that is Kether, and called Force. Therefore, Crowley, made his Kings, into Battle Kings or Knights, as they are Switched on and forceful, rather than sitting on a their royal ass on a throne anchored to earth.

Chokmah is the State of Self-Awareness, where we, begin as "Willed-Force" ; Kings and Binah is the State of Self, that organizes Force into "Willed Form"; Queens. Together will to force and will to form unite  into being, from a Divine State of Meditative-Meditation.

In our world of "self-conscious", the dreamed is unaware of the dreamer as we dream ourselves "inside out" (we are infinite inward and limited outward), an ultimate fact of our Earthly existence. We are always "looking outward", forgetting that the Driver of any vehicle, must already know how to drive it and must be "inward" to drive it.Thus you are the Master and the Masterpiece, the Transmitter and the Transmitted. Ideally our identity should flow back and forth from Transmitter and Transmitted by being the "corporate manager" in charge of both the transmitting intelligence and the receiving intelligence. Once again, you can see that your only savior, is an awakened subjective inner self saving the active-objective outer self from the delusion forced on it by "reflection".

From One "I" all identity becomes, so in actuality, we do not exist as separates, any more than fish can exist separate from the Ocean. As Self-Awareness of "I AM", we declare existence by stating "I AM ME" (Force and Form and Self conscious) becoming a Psyche/Soul/Persona  combination of Fiery Father (Electric Force) and Watery Mother, (Magnetic Form) and Child (self-conscious). Each of us a "self-vision" of the Divine, given the freedom to preform on our own. Therefore we set about defining that invisible principle of existence as a manifestation of self-identity called "Me". Thus manifestation is a simple three word definition called, "I AM ME" of which we, who are the inheritors of the Divine Creative Mind (Imagination), hold total freedom to define.

Since I AM Not, is impossible, for what ever you define as not being you, simply states, that it is you as being! This is because as you use the Force of Psyche to imagine "what is not" you must "inwardly" see it as a form, therefore, you succeed in making "what is not" into form and therefore it is "what is". Never forget, that you must identify something to deny it exists. Much like an Ocean that builds a fish of its self-identity and denies "itself" exists after it becomes identified!  Therefore it behooves us imaginative creators to understand that " I am happy" creates happiness, while "I am not Sad" creates only sadness.  Time to rethink your psyche power over the dream of you!

Since dimensions are descriptions of spatial terms, our life dream has specific dimensions as that is our best frame of reference. The Tree of Life is how the Qaballah describes these dimensional frames of reference as being a downward flowing evolution of Chokmah thru various levels of Self Dream called Sephiroth. The Hindu yoga's describes these dimensional frames of references a being the "Bodies of the Human Aura" that flow into and out of the material form.

In an attempt to make this simple: we are first willfully-dreaming our own existence (Eheieh), and that we are all collectively bubbles of Psyche (Souls) in the metaphorical effervescent Ocean of The Divine Collective Unconscious...The "Dreamer." You could say we are what is known as God-looking into a sparkling mirror (electromagnetic energy) and realizing an image.

This process of Macrocoscmic dreaming towards a more condensed and sensual dream self, Microcosmic image, is a state of Self-Awareness called the "fall", but it really is a "down sizing" the Ocean of The Divine Collective Unconscious into streaming Bubbles of individual fractal components (Souls), that causes us to "lessen" and/or give dimension to our self concepts to become more sensual and interactive, all of which is necessary for evolutionary discernment of identity.

This "Bubbling" is a type of fragmentation of the Collective, thus we lose sight of our own Divinity and must regain the Divine Sight by "reclaim" all the data we left behind on our "downward" journey into Sensual-Self-Dreaming. You may say that in manifestation, Malkuth, we are to become a Lucid dreamer, rather than a "sleeping one".

The obvious goal here is to get the inner dreamer and the dreamed to cooperate with each other and thus the dreamed-Self than begins to get control over its life happenstances as "Will to Force" (consciousness) and "Will to Form" (Imagination/unconsciousness) work in sympathy with each other. This sympathy, is a truly extraordinary experience  and is the making of a Magi where the Union of Dreamer and Dream has no veils between them, and we can have anything at all, but often require very little as we no longer experience the " wanton need" of the disconnected. One Loves, without need; One creates without fear or need of result. One wants nothing at all because one becomes I AM Me rather than "I seek Me".

Once one  discerns what does matter and what does not ("No-Thing Matters"), One goes about the Great Work of "As above, so below", a place where the bubbles are not separate, but a collective of effervescence in the Ocean of the Divine Mind.
Again, Chokmah, the 2nd Sephiroth that is known as Wisdom, rules the Knight of Swords. Chokmah also represents  the beginning state of conscious energy that is masculine in action. Therefore, Chokmah is the "idea of male" and it's mate, Binah, is the "idea of Female". When one exists, so does the other.  Now we have the concepts of Father-Mother God and/or the Divine Creative.
Chokmah being the 2nd Sephira, called---Wisdom, who is also the Force behind the four twos and the four Knights, that launches ideas towards Binah, "the womb of Mind", who receives  and Understands, therefore, beginning formation.
The twos symbolize the Forces of the King, who are shown in the Thoth Tarot as Knights/Battle Kings. The four Queens unite and initialize the "will to Force" of the Knights.
Hence, the Knight-Kings are the Fathers of and initiators of Material Forces.

 Qabalistically, THE KNIGHT OF SWORDS:
is called Specific Fire in Primal Air and that is the personification of a Force behind the World of Astral Images and ideas. This Power is violent, aggressive, and a cutting edged force that is much like a overheated wind. He as an archetype personality, is storm and violent emotion applied to an apparently manageable mind.
The symbols of this Mad Movement, is depicted in the art of the Knight of Swords, as his maddened steed is charging down from the heavens, with Tempest about, and armed with both sword and poniard, he is the very personification of the idea of attack. The Bull like power of Taurus is represented in his steed and the Twins of Gemini are shown in his armament The crest on his Helm (his personality) is a revolving wing, showing violent motion in air, much like a helicopter beats the air into submission.

Such a character, if personal, would be born between May 21st and June 10th, forming a personality  of a person who is clever, skillful, active and subtle. Being that he is fierce, delicate, and courageous, much like a Dragon Fly, does not keep him from being prey to his or her ideas which come as inspiration without consideration. Often we find, that inadequate violent action is merely futile effort at best.

However we choose to dignify this bold Knight, he is the "Extended Flame of mind" as Zoroaster calls it. Here the True Will To Force, as Chokmah is exploding the Mind.  The Taurian influence, makes the personality  steadfast and the first Decanate of Gemini makes it inspirational; thus an Idea tends to absorb the entire life of the individual in the blinding light of concentrated  aspiration. Thus is shows the danger to this state of mind, for the first Decan is also known as "shortened force" and  that shortened force is symbolized by the poniard. Shortened force often comes off as defensive and stubborn behavior.

All of this changes when this card is ill dignified. If such occurs, he is incapable of decisions or purpose, and any action he takes is so weakened by his mental indecision that it is easily brushed aside by opposition.

The B.O.T.A.  Tarot, King of Swords:
Illustrates a medieval king who sits upon his throne. He holds the sword of justice and the book of law.  The blue sky, clouds and his golden colors, subtlety state he is fire of air, so thoroughly stated in the Thoth definition.

The butterfly images, show his power of transformation., for this state of mind can change ideas by the simple transformation  of "going where the wind blows".

He is depicted as a giant, with feet on the ground and head in the air, thus implying he is an Archetype from the realm of Archetypes, i.e. The Supernal Triangle  of the Qabalistic Tree of Life.

The querent is or may be experiencing:
  • The Will to transcend.
  • An analytical period, where the power of idea and motion come into play.
  • Letting go of old beliefs and attitudes that no longer serve the motion of the individual..
  • Is a person of tough- minded common sense that is usually based on preconception and prejudice.
  • The arrogance of a powerful mind turn on itself in its own desire for control.
  • tends to judge harshly but with scrupulous fairness.
  • a lawyer, senator or doctor.
  • Mastery of creativity and confusion, as he sees new points of view, while brainstorming new thoughts that vent the mind.
  • Intellectual, and mental prowess whose only emotion is to control.
  • A strong personality of fiery emotion and powerful thought.

This Archetypal personality is a person:

  • Who possesses qualities of skill, activity, subtlety and cleverness combined with fierceness.
  •  He is both delicate and courageous while also being prey of his inspirational idea--- that he doesn't question.

If ill dignified:

  • The Card represents inadequate violence, which is useless and futile. The vigor in all the qualities before mentioned, is gone...merely a convulsion of breezes rather than a Tempest- a-charging!
