Tarot Card Comparisons: The Thoth Tarot -7 of Swords: FUTILITY & The B.O.T.A. 7 of Swords.

The Tarot of EliThe Thoth Tarot 7 of Swords:

In the Tarot of the Hermetic Qabalah, the 7's are ruled by Netzach is the Seventh Sephiroth, Victory, which governs love, feelings and instincts. It is the Group Mind Sephira, influencing nature and the arts.

As quoted from the Qabalistic Thoth Tarot Text book of Robert Wang:
"The beams of Chesed and Geburah meet in Netzach and thence in Netzach arises a green, pure, brilliant, liquid, and gleaming like an emerald. And the Sphere of its operations is that of Nogah or External Splendour, producing zeal, love, harmony, and it ruleth the Sphere of Action of the Planet Venus and the nature of the Vegetable World. And Jehovah Tzabaoth is a God of Hosts and of Armies, of Triumph and of Victory, ruling the universe in Justice and Eternity. And its Archangel Hanial, is the Prince of Love and Harmony, and the Name of the Order of Angels is Elohim, or Gods who are also called the Order of Principalities."

The Thoth Deck Seven of Swords, is called Futility or Lord of Unstable Effort, and it is almost counter-intuitive to think that futility is ruled by the intelligence of Victory. Here, the Moon is in Aquarius which indicates sociability, and religious inclinations; However, the fact that the Moon is less fluid and less changeable here than in other positions, doesn't keep the balance from being precarious and easily upset.

The 7 of Swords represents Netzach in Yetzirah-THE FORMATIVE WORLD, influencing the Astral World; a world of deception and fantasy where victory is more deception than fact; where liquid light begins to take form as dreams. Here, Crowley has precariously balanced the  Six planetary swords, one against the other, aimed against the larger Sun Sword. Implying unstable effort, vacillation and untrustworthy character. Hence, futile effort.

Green is the color attributed to Venus, the planet of Netzach. Love, feelings and instinct, the Societal Group Mind, Nature, and the Arts, all radiate from this Sephiroth.

Netzach is the first Sephiroth of the Astral triangle and is the first energy intelligence to make up the personality of the individual; Since we are all Spirit and timeless, a personality is an artificial intelligence called self-consciousness.
You may remember that I stated that the Personality is made up of the Four Alchemical Elements, each of which are represented by the lower Sephira, in the familiar sequence of Fire, Water, Air and Earth. Netzach is Fire, Hod is Water, Yesod is Air and Malkuth is Earth.

Netzach is the lower form of the fiery Yod of Chokmah that is reflected from Geburah through Tiphareth. This is the formula for Yod Heh Vau Heh, "The Secret name of God". Malkuth being the final Heh, because of the "fall" which is really a condensing or "down sizing" of Self from the impersonal Macrocosm to the personal Microcosm. Thereby, you truly are an "image of god".

In Netzach, normal waking consciousness of the student, must deal with the Astral Triangle and the component parts of the Personality, after all, we are not of the Personality, it is a fractal of Our Soul collective!

Personalities are software programs that are created from data"experience" and are to operate in an experimental fashion with Hardware. Therefore Personalities are supplanted in the brain to manipulate the physical body properly to the purpose of the Soul. All of which is seemingly easy enough, but then the fact the body is a small child whose brain isn't yet fully developed until about 7 years old, and is centered only on "not being rejected" by the Parents, who go about indoctrinating the child to their personality, makes the purity of the Soul's creation, futile.

Hence our personality was made for us out of the illusions, delusions, and ambitions of "Authority", who haven't a clue about themselves, and who still "fear rejection". The thought, that is often held in the darkness of denial, is that by becoming rulers of identity, who enforce identity on everyone else, they can't be rejected.  So instead of "being your purpose", our personalities are "seeking a purpose" and are just slaves to our environment and words.

Yet again the axiom of Qaballah: "Above all things, Know thyself!" rings true!

The most important part of Qabalistic and metaphysical initiation is to observe the layers of lies, that your personality is constructed from, removing layer after layer of false you (garbage in), until the real you shines true, just as you would a diamond in the rough. This "Garbage in" is called man-made group persona and the "Garbage out" is the dysfunctional action of "seeking yourself" in the eyes of your peers, or of authority. You are already God approved----you exist, and your Software for operating the Hardware, was already created by the Higher Self-Psyche, that many of us call "the Soul". Questions are not forms, they are "nots", vacant places. Whereas, answers are manifested as forms! Therefore, you are an answer to a need of your soul collective, not a question of "what am I" but rather an "I AM ME"!

Often, Mystery schools use a set of Tattva exercises as a type of "controlled day dream" (guided meditations), intended to bring the student into direct contact with the subtle Elemental realms immediately underlying the material sphere of sensation. Often, I bring those Elemental realms into sensual manifestation for my students, all of which is necessary to prepare the student for more advance techniques of skrying with Tarot Cards.
The Student of the Hermetic Qabalah, learns that the 78 Tarot Cards, are 78 fragments of a Self-Fractal, that they must rejoin to become "Holy" and/or Whole Self.

It should be understood, that the astral realm beginning with Netzach, is a fluid, non-solid electromagnetic psycho-dynamic realm where everything begins in illusion/dream. It is the place, where our Formative consciousness can experiment with image, such as children role-playing, in order to comprehend in a later stage of growth; the actual manifestation of being "that". If done with controlled will, this is a boon to any creative endeavor on Earth; if taken as rote, all hell will break loose on earth!

The Astral nor its denizens of personal illusions is not a Master of your personality! Nor is anything that you contact in it your ruler, for most of the Astral denizens are lost personalities, or superstition built demons, i.e. incomplete fractals!
The Astral is a malleable realm of  psycho-dynamic-thought-substance and/or "fluid light", used to begin creating form by assembling "thoughts", not what our identity is created by!  Most "Medium-Channels" just channel astral persona's, and live in an illusion of devotional thought, not allowing them to see that they are delusions. For it is futile to believe that you are "seeking" spirituality, since you already are Spirit's self-identity! Again, a fish in the ocean seeking water, is involved in a futile endeavor.

Let me explain what few wish you to know: A god is a dominate Consciousness on its Plane of Dominion. Every one of the Ten Sephiroth, is a god, you are composed of the United cooperation of these energy intelligentsia we call "gods" (microcosmic Demi-urges), which contribute to the make up the One God/ Divine Creative-Macrocosm. And not only are you a Demiurge (child of the One) you're are one better, because you have also composed a body of the Animal "god", Top Mammal Predator, ruler of its domain, the Human body! So, You, are a Great Group of Ten demi- gods, who should be working as One Group Soul of your individual Tree of Life...A One God/holy Spirit, rather than just identifying with the social-group soul of Netzach.  The fact that most of us are not, is because we've been mentally separated from the reality of our divinity! This was done by the manipulation of our imagination,(auto-suggestion) by "The few who wish to rule the many"i.e. Rulers, who are those who control definition! The Astrals are the beginning of identity formation in the Soma, of earth. And by giving you "nightmare" stories of how bad your natural body is, you forgot it is a 'god" of its domain!
To know ourselves, each of us must return consciously to the Astral , by meditation, skrying and lucid dreaming, and begin cleaning up our software by facing our identified terrors!

When we are dealing with Netzach, we are dealing with understanding a particularly difficult State of energy conscious, where imagination designs our self-identity and "anything goes".
Netzach is where both the Macrocosm and Microcosm meet. Thus we are dealing with the understanding of the entire race patterns of human kind, as well as, patterns of individual persona and as if that isn't enough, we must understand that this dichotomy is in itself an illusion! For as we cause a self-perspective we effect our form identity. This is called a psychosomatic reaction.

You may note, dear reader, that Netzach in the suit of Swords, does not represent as much catastrophe as in other suits, as this Sephira of Venus means Victory. There is, however, a wish to compromise. a halting tolerance and a certain vacillation. When over done, this need for compromise can bring disaster; not always does a policy of appeasement produce peace as any student of WWII knows.

The Six Swords chipping away at the One Strong Sword, suggests a contest between the many feeble and the one strong. The Strong One strives in vain against the pusillanimity of the many.

As stated, astrologically this card is  Moon in Aquarius (Moon symbol on top and Aquarius symbol on bottom). The Moon in Aquarius indicates sociability, often religious inclination. While the Moon is less fluid and changeable here, the balances established are easily upset.

To a Qabalist, this is Netzach (Victory) in Yetzirah (Astral World). The Astral world is fluid and deceptive, while Netzach is success after battle. Which indicates that much struggle is wrought before achieving what you envision.

The mundane divination meaning of this card is unstable effort, vacillation and untrustworthy character.

More over, this card represents wanting something but believing you can't have it. You are resigned to giving up.
  • However, there is  the desire and possibility of victory over this feeling of futility within the nest 7 weeks or 7 months. The feeling of futility is really just creating problems for yourself by not believing in your creative potential. The mind has become inflexible and focused on fear of lack.
  • Mental flexibility is the up side of this card. It reminds us to experiment in all areas of our life; lifestyle, daily routine, beliefs and communications. Hence, "to settle for" is to practice futility----because life is a constant transformation of Force and Form...Form and Force. We En-Force our will upon the Motion of our Form by creating Beliefs, dogma, ideas and emotion for the mind body union is Psychosomatic.  To know that Energy-in-Motion (emotion), is set in motion by the Will that is you and not the follower that is body---is to avoid futility. In other words,  I Am the E-Motion that operates this body, rather than, I am emotional, which implies that the body is moved by environment rather than an observant consciousness.  When Emotions are just let loose with out Willful focus, they are a unstable effort, vacillation, and untrustworthy character. Like all Motion, Energy-in-motion (emotions) requires guidance systems in order to "hit their target".
  • "Above all things know thyself", also describes a vital character who knows what it wants and is able to line up its sights and get it without harming others in the process. "To know thyself", means that every thing you see is another way to be you [Force and Form] so being intelligent, you knowingly treat them well but here is the caveat; to treat others as yourself is a law which you never have broken! If you think ill of you, you treat others ill! If you think Well of you, you treat others well! That is how the One Conscious operates, since all that is, is another way to be the One Energy that can't be destroyed or created, only transformed and transmitted!

Therefore, it is FUTILE to seek happiness when you are unhappy with you! Victory over chaos, comes from an Ordered Mind/Emotion union; to Love being is the Greatest Balance of Order! Love thyself, makes all things possible. Dislike yourself, makes everything a horrendous effort of futility!

One can say that the 7 of Swords card says,"Wake-up to a new perspective about you or all your actions are futile; you're good enough to inherit the All!"  Remember, inheritance is not earned, it is accepted. Justice states, that what you think you are worth, is what you get! We are all the Children of the Divine Creative (Divine Parents)---our presence is enough to inherit the Universe but we decide our presence by our perspective of ourselves! Why limit your presence? As a Solar-consciousness, Rock On with your earth body-dance partner! You are the Force of your Forms,  so dance!

The Thoth Seven of Swords-Futility: This card represents the sabotaging mind where you know what you want symbolized by the central sword and then go about defining the reasons why you can't obtain it, as shown by the six swords surrounding the central one. This is the yes-but mind that often keeps us from making our dreams work. Astrologically the 7 of Swords is Moon and Sun in Aquarius, the circle with a dot in the center is a symbol of the Sun /solar conscious (on hilt of large Sword), the Crescent is the Moon/unconscious and the wavy lines at the bottom are Aquarius.

Each of the six swords of procrastination bear a planetary sign for the six ways we sabotage our selves.
  1. The yes-but aspect of Saturn is telling us there is too much red-tape or it's too complicated.
  2. Another Sword has on the handle the symbol of Mercury which is about the negative communication of " I can't... I wish I'd a ...If only..." all negative reasons why "it won't work".
  3. Another sword handle bares the planetary sign of Jupiter; the planet that symbolizes flexibility and expansion. The negative self-talk of Jupiter is  "it's too limiting and constricted" or " I am not lucky" or "I am not talented enough".
  4. Another sword sports the planetary sign of Mars. Positively Mars is a sign of dynamic energy, vitality, and assertion but the negative side of Mars is " I don't have the energy to...I am burnt out...it's dull and boring etc."
  5. Another sword handle is adorned with the sign of Venus; the planet of Love. The Venusian negatives would be," I really don't care...It doesn't mean anything to me anyway."
  6. Then there is the final sword whose handle supports the double loops which represent the Sun and the Moon the negatives of which are consciously and subconsciously you sabotage yourself out of doing what it is that you want to do. In other words, you are caught in wanna-be-ism which is a viscous cycle of mental inferiority.

Instead of the Power of I AM,we are caught in the self-denial of I Ain't... Often we run "mind loops" that constantly repeat our past as today's reason for not progressing or going forward with our life. These mind loops are the "nag within" syndrome that fear of discomfort/fear of vulnerability, often generates in our subconscious to avoid presumed pain.

The B.O.T.A.  7 of Swords is again rather mundane in its depiction of the Swords.
The above triangle of three yellow-gold swords represents Tiphareth, Netzach and Hod (Sephira,6-7-8) and is reflected as a square of four below. Four is the number of Form. So what is implied here, is that what is imagined above, is what takes form below.  Which is true and requires one to Own their own imagination, rather than have one that is jerked around by environment or peers. Therefore, what is implied in the Thoth tarot is also implied here.

When the Qabalistic Thoth 7 of Swords card is thrown:
  •  You will have the opportunity presented to you in the next 7 weeks or 7 months to break out of your self-imposed defeatism and move towards creating what you really do want.
  • It's time to "damn the torpedoes and go full steam ahead".
  •  You do know what you want, that is the truth you may be trying to avoid.
  • The falsehood is the feeling of hopelessness and helplessness.
  • Remember that the 7's are associated with the Charioteer, which is the originator of motion and change. So this card is not nagging at your weakness but advising you that choosing you wants moves you forward into a satisfying life motion and that you have the inherent power to do so.
  • You have the capability to release sabotaging thought processes that where developed in a past that may go back to 7 years or when you where 7 years old.
  • Focus on what you truly want; focus your heart, creative mind and passion on it, and your programed self-defeat won't be able to impede you , it just becomes white noise in the back wash of your powerful wake on the ocean of possibilities.
  • The querent maybe experiencing thoughts of futility.
  •  A sense of resignation produced by wanting something but believing they can't have it.
  • Giving up.
  • There is a possibility of breaking through this futile cloud, in seven weeks or seven Months.
  • This card suggests that because of guilt feelings or resentment, the querent is creating problems for themselves.
  • There is a certain craftiness displayed, schemes and actions are brought to bear, that solve nothing.
  • There is an opportunity to regroup and review, if one forgoes the schemes and seeks advice from others.
  • There is suggested that there is just too much noise in the brain for focused action, as many feeble thoughts of vacillation out shout the One strong will to act.
Thank you for your interest, comments, and supportive donations. May you live long and prosper!
