In the Tarot of the Hermetic Qabalah, The Thoth Tarot 3 of Wands/Virtue, represents Binah (the Great Mother) the 3rd Sephiroth-Understanding, in the suit of Fire. This card symbolizes the Primeval energy, that all form consists of. The Great Mother has received the transmitted Will and conceives, prepares and gives birth to its manifestation.
In the zodiac, this card is the Sun in Aries, a sign in which Aries is exalted. This is a harmonious flow of energy, as it is the birth of Spring and new things are growing rapidly and this is stated in the Thoth Deck 3 of Wands, as the Lotus Wands. The Sun has en- kindled the Mother.
It is interesting to note that the word Virtue is used to describe this card, as virtue has a often hidden meaning. "Be true to thine own self", is the practice of a Virtuous person. It is easily seen that those who practice self deceit, have deceptive lives.Virtue may be understood as Aristotelian virtue:
"In his work Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle defined a virtue as a point between a deficiency and an excess of a trait. The point of greatest virtue lies not in the exact middle, but at a golden mean sometimes closer to one extreme than the other. However, the virtuous action is not simply the "mean" (mathematically speaking) between two opposite extremes. As Aristotle says in the Nicomachean Ethics: "at the right times, about the right things, towards the right people, for the right end, and in the right way, is the intermediate and best condition, and this is proper to virtue." This is not simply splitting the difference between two extremes. For example, generosity is a virtue between the two extremes of miserliness and being profligate.
Further examples include: courage between cowardice and foolhardiness, and confidence between self-deprecation and vanity. In Aristotle's sense, virtue is excellence at being human." [Quoted from Wikipedia the free encyclopedia]
The Qaballist knows this virtue, as they practice doing to others what they want done to themselves, and this is "being true to thine own self". The volume of Powerful flow of the Life Force (Fire of Spirit) is predetermined by the Virtue of the Manifestation. Open channels, unblocked by deception, denial, and bigotry, are the best Life Force vessels. Often, people confuse morals with virtue, but morals can be rules imposed by others, where as in the Hermetic Qabalah, virtue is the morality of Self. The Virtuous know that when you treat others as you would be treated, you are practicing the only morality needed, for everyone or thing I see is another way of being me.
The Three of Wands-Virtue, represents the Spiritual Integrity, Honesty, that is the Virtue of Spirit.
Virtue is the effective potent force necessary for putting thoughts into action. This is the holy balance of the 3 that defines and clarifies the identity, where you see yourself more clearly.
Virtue/integrity, is the conscious state of heart, mind and physical action working in concert with each other (seen as three lotus bosoms in united purpose). Where I AM ME is a dynamic creative action rather than a "wanna-be" dream.
The sign of the Sun, above and Aries below, represents the astrological sign of the Sun in Aries, symbolizing radiant dynamic energy moving in new directions but from a foundation of virtue. The communion of mind, heart and physical action, is a holy mass of dynamic creativity that "does unto another, what you would have done to you"...a virtuous motion that assists life in its ever-forward expansion.
The Four 3's are associated with Binah who is the Great Mother and is called UNDERSTANDING. In Understanding, the idea becomes fertilized and a child can be born. The formulation of the Triangle, (Kether-Crown, Chokma-Wisdom & Binah-Understanding) is a stability that cannot be made unstable. We know the Triangle that begins all birth as many combinations of 3. For instance, Maid-Mother-and Crone, each a special perspective on the Female triangle of Womb-rite, or Father-Son- and Holy Ghost, each a active part of the stable foundation of "the Spirit Fire" or rite of Phallus. Then there is Ocean-Rain-and River, each a process of Life or Ocean-Sun-and Earth. While the mind is made up of the Spirit Mind of the Universal Collective Unconscious, subconscious (body) and conscious, We can go on and on but in all cases a fertilization is achieved and a child can be born.
The Thoth 3 of Wands is called Virtue, and/or The Lord of Virtue ( Anglo Saxon-Husbandry as in "Shepard" of virtue) , for in this state of conscious energy, the idea of will and dominion has become interpreted in Character.
A lot has been said, but not many understand that the body is merely a Reflection of self, of your "Dark side" and/or the Unconscious of the Great Self; the invisible you who is the energetic majority of You (you are 99.6% invisible). It is in the Dark, warmth, of your "infinite light" (Spirit) that all Life comes from. The body is Alive, but in itself is not Life!
As stated, the body is a Reflection of Life. Think well from your deep dark places, to be Alive and Well! It pays to remember this axiom,"Do unto another as you would have done to you."...for that is in itself a Triangle of three---Idea, Cause and effect. It is unbreakable in its stability. So it pays to know what your ideas create. If you identify "others" instead of "Another" (everyone I see is another way to be me.) you will keep lessening yourself until your life force can no longer sustain the body health and balance. To think less of others, is to lessen your self and this generates a deep sorrow in your soul. Your thoughts, ideas, and opinions only effect the Cause of Yourself. Your Reflection, enacts your Deep thoughts, into "aliveness". Your body, the youngest part of the Spiral Entity that is I AM, is the only one who feels your thoughts and then must enact them as a "me". We are not responsible for how "others" react to us. We are, however, the response of reaction to our own thought!
Love, is smart for it is both wise and understanding---not the act of a simpleton but of a Powerful Spirit.. To Love Being----is to Be love.
Others are just Another way to be Divine Children; Children who have the Goddess given Freedom of Choice; gifted Divine Children, who have a right to their identities, be they ill or well thought out.
The Magus knows, that to be able to "think" means you are not the effect called Thought, but the Cause of it. So my thoughts aren't "my precious", they are the effect that causes the Alive motion, making the body a sacred place of discernment, which is "my precious". I then have the Knowledge to make, and remake thought to improve the function of my body, rather than think that I am the thought I think, and must defend those thoughts to the death....which elevates unproven idea above the proof of Alive and therefore eliminating the Alive or at least enslaving the Alive to unproven "visions". This is the reverse of reason, for being Alive is how Life expands and liberates the manifested consciousness from self-imposed limits and how the Soul learns discernment! To make Thought Sensual, is a to form a screening process!
Because of this Life/Alive process each of us is now a creative Spirit (Life microwave frequency) who can devote our thought controlled "time/space" to "expanding and liberating" the Body from the survival thinking of the animal domain. This in turn expands and liberates self awareness! By the feelings of Love, or Fear generated by the Communion of idea with a sensual- living laboratory, idea becomes experimentation where we can find the ideas that either free the body from the past (love) or bind it to the past (fear). Idea is not enough to properly operate the Alive! Life depends on the Threesome of the Divine Wedding which is the triangle made of Idea ,the Union of Wisdom and Understanding to create the Beautiful Bright Child called "the Alive human"!
When you understand the Threes, you begin to understand your Godhood.
The Qabalistic Thoth 3 of Wands-Virtue:
In the Suit of Fire, the Three of Wands is Springtime, thus the flowering lotus wands are shown. The Sun is exalted in Aries and the number 3 is Binah (Understanding) on the Tree of Life which means that the Sun has rekindled the Great Mother.
In the Three of Wands, Primal Energy is established, as the Will (Spirit) has been transferred to the Great Mother, who prepares, conceives, and gives birth to the Will as manifestation.
Since the Sun is at its zenith in Aries, there is a caution of overdoing it ...too much Sun can kill.
There is an underlying admonishment suggested in this card, one must seek patience and perseverance or succumb to over weaning ambition. With this much force focused on the personality, Virtue is indeed a... virtue.
In the case of the Thoth Three of Wands, Virtue is "always being true to one's Self" which means don't violate yourself for any reason. Since I know that everyone I see is another way to be me, I understand that by thinking ill of or mistreating others in anyway, I violate my own bodies balance, as it must enact my emotional-energetic- thought. Emotional thought, is ambitious thought and with this much fiery motion (e-motion) thoughts seek ambitiously to bloom! Thoughts must be well guarded before they are let out of the "pen" of the brain; be not afraid to examine the seed before you cast it!
The Sun is full-out and Shinning in the Three of Wands, a great emotional period of powerful energy is upon the querent, who must be Virtuous at all times., "or be slain by the Arrows of Apollo".
This is also full on sexual energy, and can be quite a rush towards creation! But again, be Virtuous or "all hell will break loose". Now don't get me wrong, this is not about Chasity, this is about the type of energetic manifestation of the Solar Phallus, that Tantric practitioners seek to experience, as it enlivens the dormant seeds of self, just as spring does to the dormant seeds of winter. But this can become uncontrollable to the untrained personality, so take great care with great energy. These DNA seeds, are all strung together, and there are "seeds" of DNA that one doesn't want to awaken prematurely.
The B.O.T.A. Tarot-3 of Wands, displays its "as above so below" fire wands in a triangle. This mimics the upper Supernal Triangle of the Qabalistic Tree of Life.
As always, the B.O.T.A. Tarot doesn't expound upon any arcane mysteries in the small cards. However, what pertains to the Thoth Card, is so on the B.O.T.A. card.
When thrown during a divination, the Three of Wands, the Fiery Spirit is focusing on the Querent and great things can be done:
