Tarot Card Comparisons: the Thoth Tarot- ACE OF CUPS & The Barbara Walker Tarot- ACE OF CUPS/LOVE

The Tarot of EliThe Thoth Tarot- ACE OF CUPS compared to the Barbara Walker Tarot- ACE OF CUPS/ LOVE  and the 1st Sephiroth- Kether:

If you have any knowledge of the latest in Astrophysics, you may understand that Kether is the "Dark energy that becomes-Dark Matter", and that both are really not understood by us. Kether, the Crowning Source of All, is not known to us objectively, but it's presence is subjectively understood as a movement within all that moves; an invisible thermodynamic that produces energy, often called the "Dark Sun".

Again, the Aces are attributed to Kether and they represent the most pure forms of the element they represent. Each is a specific type, and density of Energy and Form that we call the Pythagorean or Alchemical Elements.

THE ACE OF CUPS:
Is Kether in Briah, depicting the influence of Kether on the Mental Level. The Ace of Cups is the Root Powers of Water, an element used to symbolize the Consciousness ( The Unconscious builds Conscious) and emotions (in combination with Fire) .

The Thoth Deck Version of this Card shows the wave action characteristic of physical water implying the activity that encloses and directs pure consciousness. As the Universe of Energy is woven out of waves of consciousness, ideas that are understood. Thus the Web in the background. The Barbara Walker Tarot, chooses to show the wave action as the power of that turns the Water Wheel  of "Life" with the heart central, indicating the Graäl and/or Loving womb of the Great Mother.

The Cup, is the Psyche Womb of Form, and emerges from the Lotus (Crown) on the Thoth Card implying the idea of Womb; the seed of the concept of conception. Therefore, the Ace of Wands is the idea of Phallus and the Ace of Cups is the Idea of Womb.  The Ace of Cups is derived from-Yoni Moon, as the Ace of Wands is from Phallus- Sun.. The Thoth Ace of Cups represents the "Holy Grail" as does the Barbara Walker Tarot, showing both heart womb, and drinking cup.
Seen on the Thoth Tarot- Ace of Cups, the dark Sea of Binah supports the Two in One Lotuses that fill the cup with Life Fluid, be it symbolized, by water, wine or blood or a women's own "sexual fluids", which the ancients believed was stimulated by the impulse of love in the heart of woman. Two in One, is the realization of the Womb and Phallus, or as the ancient myths of Egypt, the "yoni swallowing phallus", often depicted as a Fish.

According to Crowley, the White Light descending is depiction of the Holy Ghost and/or Holy Spirit, more often than not, symbolized by a white dove.
The Holy Spirit represents the All of  Spiral-Energy and/or "The Holy Spiral"; each spiral a circle, each circle a dimension of the Divine Creative's Self-Understanding. On the Qabalistic Tree of Life, are 10-numbered Circles/spheres called Sephiroth. In Quantum physics, it is understood that there are 10 identifiable dimensions.

The Qabalistic Thoth- ACE OF CUPS, and the Barbara Walker Tarot Ace of Cups, represent the emotional world of feeling; the time of Summer and the Space of East. This is the symbol of receptivity, psychism, instincts, fears, memories, desires, dreams, fantasy, and all the other aspects of the subconscious. This is the essence of imagination, what I call "the womb-with-a -view". This is the Dark Abysmal Womb of The Divine Creative, which Dr. Carl Jung called the Universal Collective Unconscious.

The colors of the Tarot Cups, are those of water, lakes, ponds, oceans, rivers, rain and the blood. If you remember your biology, blood is blue until it is oxidized, becoming red(You may have notice your blue veins). The Thoth Ace of Cups, is the Holy Grail/Graäl sitting within the emotional nature (would be a fitting symbol for the Emotional Body of our Aura) which is represented by the blue cup. It is the conscious state of emotional integrity, as represented by the double rainbow. The inside and outside are without dichotomy. As above so below can also be seen here.

The Ace of cups also symbolizes the ability to nurture one's-self with the same capacity as one gives out to others.

The blue Grail, is Wisdom and the Cup symbol is Love, making it apparent that Love and Wisdom are in union as a flow of nurturing, healing, supporting emotional force (as seen by the radiance entering the cup). Love and Wisdom in equal balance. This Love and Wisdom balance is shown on the Barbara Walker Tarot, by the turning water wheel, with heart red love hub, turning on an axle lodged in the Uterine Womb/ cave.

The serpent handles of the Thoth Tarot- cup symbolize the regenerative nature of this balance.
The lotus base represents the trusting heart who never over-extends itself emotionally but unfolds itself naturally without resistance or holding itself back. In fact, this Love-Wisdom union is the woven fabric of Life itself, as symbolized by the web of Spider Woman (Native American Mother of the Universe) that is seen behind the Thoth Grail/cup.

Barbara Walker
chooses to use an old European image of the Great Mother; the Goddess
Minne,
a name made famous by the medieval minnesingers,
who called Minne their patron. She was often depicted as a mermaid. Pre-Christian Europe new her as Aphrodite, Venus, Isis, Freya, Mari, Mana, Maerin, Mene, Diana, Juno, along with many variants
of these. Churchmen regarded her worship as heresy, for her minstrels, who called themselves her honorary sons, celebrated her in poetry and through minnedienst, the "service of Women". To serve women, was indeed a horror to the Christian fathers who blamed Eve for the downfall of mankind.

The reasoning behind the mermaid image, was because she symbolized the Vesica Pisces (vessel of fish), the emblem for the female yoni, fertility, giver of love, life etc.: along with the Oceanic Womb, the water producing full moon called the Pearl of the Sea, the single or double fish tail,  and the cup or Grail, identified as her Sacred Heart.
One must remember, to the ancients, there could be no father god, unless she gave birth to him and "named him father".  To those misogynists who wish to control Life and its production thereof, this thought process had to go. Justifying the Misogynistic- Patriarchal religions still worshiped today.

I would re comment one get the Barbara Walker book: The Woman's encyclopedia of Myths and Secrets. For a greater in-depth presentation of the Ancient Mother, for it is prodigiously researched and well presented.

When the Ace of Cups card is thrown, it indicates:

  • That  in the period of one year you will experience  emotional integrity, equal balance in self-nurturing and the nurturing of others.
  • The Ace of Cups also implies the implementation of trust that can be experienced in relationships with water sign people in your life; Pisces, (February 21- March 21), Scorpios, (October 21 to November 21) and Cancer (June 21-July 21).
  • The Ace of Cups is a quality of the Magus (key 1 of the Trump) who is the archetype of communication.
  • The Ace of Cups is the aspect of being able to communicate feelings from a place of emotional integrity and trust rather than from a place of control.
  • This card represents the Ecstasy that comes with the Love of life in its entirety. As the Tao has stated,"..where there is ecstasy, there is creation. Where there is no ecstasy there is no creation." Maybe Ecstasy built us so it could be us!
  • A new attitude brings rewards.
  • In a period of One Year, the querent will develop a new relationship, or new awareness about existing relationship.
  • Is experiencing a new bust of empathy, emotion, sentiment or enthusiasm  This is a time for staying open and vulnerable in order to reap rewards.
  • The opening of spiritual, psychic, intuitive channels
  • Heart opening to the gift of Love.

Thank you for your interest, comments and supportive donations. May you and yours live long and prosper.

As always, wonderful deep and complex explanation of the card. One question-you mentioned that the ace of cups corresponds to the east. I would think that because it is water it would correspond to the west. Dbr

Hi Bee! The Ace of Cups, is The Moon, whose light responds to the Sun, and as such it is the time of Summer and responds to the Rising Sun in the East. However, your comment has merit, as West is setting Sun and Moon rise. But in this case, She Responds to the Sun light, rather than the dark Moon or Moon light. Thank you for your comments. May you live long and prosper.
