Tarot Card Comparisons: The Thoth Tarot- 7 of Cups: Debauch & The Barbara Walker Tarot-7 of Cups: Dream

The Tarot of EliTHE THOTH 7 OF CUPS-DEBAUCH & THE BARBARA WALKER TAROT-7 OF CUPS-DREAM:

The 7 of cups=Emotional over extension.

Astrologically this card represents Venus in Scorpio. To a Qabalist, this is Netzach (victory) in Briah (the Mental World). Venus in Scorpio is intensely emotional and often involves deceit; a wallowing in emotions or a self-deception. There is a certainty of egocentricity and selfishness and thus the meaning of the card is error, illusion and illusionary success or as Barbara Walker names it; Dream.

Hence, The 7 of Cups mundanely represents a dreamy state of mind where dreams, watery visions, fantasy or imagination are not connected to anything in real life. Therefore, there is a denial, that is determined to make something from dreams but difficulty in deciding among abundant choices. Therefore, in the 7 of, the great Pleasure of the 6 of Cups (Sun in Scorpio) is pervert by the inflation of egotistical fantasies.

The Qabalistic Thoth Deck 7 of Cups is is in reference to number 7-Netzach (victory) in the suit of Water and is governed in the zodiac by Venus in Scorpio. Venus is ill dignified in Scorpio and one is reminded that Venus is the planet of Copper which is noted for its "external splendor and internal corruption". There is a invariable weakness here, arising from lack of balance.

As illustrated in the Thoth card, the lotuses are corrupted and look to be dripping a oozing slime (instead of water), which overflows into a malarious morass of a sea. The cups are iridescent and are carrying out the same idea of corruption.

We know the Six of Cups to Be Pleasure and can say that the 7 of Cups -Debauch is almost the "evil and averse" image of the Six. As A. Crowley put it," it is a wholesome reminder of the fatal ease with which a Sacrament may be profaned and prostituted." It is suggested by this card, that when one loses touch with Kether (Crown on the Tree of Life) The Highest Serphiroth even if diverging ever so slightly from the delicate balance of the Middle Pillar, at once the holiest mysteries of Nature become the obscene and shameful secrets of a guilty conscience.
The Barbara Walker Tarot-7 of Cups: Dream, shows a muse, pouring her inspiration into the mind of a man. The return to the "child's land" in the 6 of cups, leads naturally to the 7s pre-verbal modes of thought. Here, one resides in the rich depths of the unconscious, tapping into dreams and archetypal imagery. Which, in truth, is what the Tarot is designed to do; act as a muse , releasing the conscious from the word bound man-made personality and therefore allowing it to tap into Archetypal imagery, of which we and all things are "made manifest".
Here, one is "breathing in Spirit"(Inspiration) and idea, which is the Goddess within.

Many of us know of the Greek concept of Muses, female spirits of inspiration, and creativity, especially the Arts, of dance, music, poetry etc. Muses were either a trinity or a nine-fold emanation of the Goddess herself. Bringing to mind,  the "9 maidens" of Teutonic myth who produce all the "I-deas".
The Tibetan Tantric's, as well as, many ancient religion's, viewed the source of inspiration as a feminine spirit, even when in a masculine host. By Tantric definition, the way of the Muses was the Left-Hand Path, Vamacara, "The way of Women" or simply Marga, "the way". Marga, was another name for the Goddess herself.[Avalon-164]
To the Chinese, "the way" is called the Tao, and Chinese sages described Tao, by many metaphors applicable to their idea of the Primal Womb.

In Medieval folk-lore, it is said that a man could receive rich favors if he found a statue of the Goddess in a ruined temple, and made it his "lady love", like Pygmalion of the olden time; If he embraced her, ejaculate semen on her, and promised her that he would never enter a  patriarchal church again, she would become his muse/fate, dwell in his dreams and tell him secrets, such as where to find buried treasure and gems. Here the survival ego of ignorant man forgets that a muse's buried treasure  and gems were a metaphoric example of her bright and shining wisdom.  Here to, the holiest mysteries of nature, a sacrament, through time, becomes "profaned and prostituted" to the obscene and shameful secrets of a guilty conscience by those who take literally the images presented in dreams. Because, some men did this act of "statue hugging" and semen ejaculating, but found that they didn't get directions to or found any "buried treasure", word spread that the Goddess of the Left hand path was an artificer of false-hope. However, what some of us know, one's ignorance is not the fault of another.

Direction in life is all about perspective, and perspective is imagined as "I sight" from a point in time. Hence, perceiving ones self a victim is to see only the muck and mire of stagnant emotions. The Seven of Cups is often a card of squalid emotions, shown on the Thoth Card as a putrefying pool of water that has no fresh water input; the emotional self without fresh input of  expansive self perspectives grows putrid and stagnant. To seek only comfort, because we fear, lack or loss, pain, and emotions, both mentally and physically, makes us a static swamp of negative emotions, i.e. turning our  Imagination, the source of ideas and creativity, into an obscene sacrament.

The lack of courage to act, destroys our motion and life is movement, therefore our emotions have become a quick sand that slowly suffocates our identity.  The Tree of Life is Us, the Divine Child, the Adam Khadmon (Ascended-Living- Man) in our most dynamic state of Movement, we are a Sacrament unto Goddess/God. This card suggest that we must take steps to free our emotional self from its  fantasy prison of fear. By taking one step and following that step with another, we shall begin to move into the present and leave behind the past.

To reiterate: NETZACH is the 7th Sephiroth, ruler of the sevens, is where feelings, and instincts begin. Netzach is undifferentiated and the Sephiroth of Group Mind. It is connected to it's opposite, the eighth Sephiroth- HOD-whose attributes are of the intellect, individualization, and beginnings of the individual mind.
When observing this balance we can see that Netzach is the Sephira to which the forces of Nature are attributed.

The Angels of this Sephira are called Elohim, often called the gods, because they are for the personality in incarnation and for the human race. Also, Netzach is the Sphere of Venus-Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love. Thus Netzach -Victory, implies that the Victory is in Love of Being. Remember, Hu-man means God Mind, which declares us Elohim!

The spark (fire is Spirit) of the individual self-conscious mind/personality begins in the Group Soul-Fire that is Netzach, and becomes part of a group of flames that is self-comprehending/ or self aware, while also comprehending the Whole. Therefore, it is not all surprising that the arts, music, painting, poetry and all other things of creative imagination, are attributed to the Netzach/Hod union.

The Three key symbols of Netzach are the:
Rose,  Girdle and the Lamp.

The Rose is attributed to Venus and often associated with Love, as the most perfect flower.

Traditionally the Girdle is also an attribute of Venus and to learn the secret of the knot in her Girdle means to direct the Venus forces of nature, i.e. tie them up or release them at will.

The Lamp is the bearer of Fire relating Netzach to Geburah and the powerful warring forces of Mars. Is also known on another level, as the ever-burning light of the Temple of Lower Self.

The 7 of Cups-Debauch, also known as the: Lord of Illusory Success, because here the Moon is in Aquarius. Therefore, here is Netzach in Yetzirah, influencing the Astral World of Dreams.

In the 7 of Cups, is also Venus is in Scorpio, creating a very intense and emotional presence that is often involved in deceit. There is also a tendency to wallow in emotions, and/or self-deception to the point of dissipation. This does make it a card of egocentricity and selfishness.

Thus Crowley implies a great warning in this card, his lotuses are slimy, and ugly, a perversion of the sacrament of the cup in the Six; a perversion usually brought about by over-inflating the ego or staying locked in past emotions. The consciousness is polluted and the card implies, error, illusion and illusionary success, by denying the failure of past emotions to do the job.

Many of us fail to see that our individual body and consciousness, is a holy sacrament, rather we debase ourselves, with thoughts of lack, or superiority (bad and good), when neither exist.

We are One, who is Many. The Many are a collective of the Sacred Sacraments of the One. In other words, our incarnate consciousness is a formal sacred act or rite of Spirit and our Soul-Psyche, is made of many personalities, each new personality a composite of the past experiences. It is the rite of Spirit to become Sensually Self Aware through the sacrament of Creation and/or self-identity-creation! I AM ME! Is a declaration of an Elohim Yod, who is self aware.....and now can discriminate self-thoughts from group-thoughts. Group thoughts are considered to be "words", while the True Thought is Self-Image!

Thoughts, are the "First Matter" (symbolized as a fish), awareness of "First Matter" manipulation, i.e. linking image and e-motion, makes us Supreme in our creations! By untying the "not" of thoughts that have been installed by social word manipulation and pleasure/pain training, we become masters of Existence---the I AM ME, rather than the polluted thoughts of a "I Wanna-Be Me" or "I AM Not"; A person  who is all tied up in self absorbed pain-creation is living in a swamp of past emotion.  To believe "we are not", really just states that we are creating ourselves as a "Lack" or a hole in time, an "I Ain't" rather than an "I AM".  We are perverted by denying our own immortal sacredness, a 10 dimensional Idea of Self, with the 2 dimensional thinking of the good/bad survival mind who fears its mortality because it is "trapped in flesh".  Being "trapped by flesh", is indeed the limited thought of an "artificial intelligence", for we are of the Divine Mother-Imagination, who is the Ocean of the Universal Collective Unconscious, that all form resides in. Inspiration, literally to "breath in Spirit", is to state that Spirit is All Around  and as YOU! To be the Real Self is to be as an Ocean is to a fish, all around it, creating the image/ fish within itself, and flows through its Imagined creation to form the motion of Life-and/or Self-experience!

The Thoth 7 of Cups-Debauch or Dream,  seems such a large step into the negative after the Six of Cups-Pleasure; The 6 and 7 are both astrologically Scorpio, but instead of Scorpio being exalted in the Sun as in the 6, in the 7 of Cups, Scorpio is governed by Venus and Venus is ill dignified in the sign. Venus is the planet of Copper, She is all "external splendor and internal corruption", such superficiality in a martial and watery sign as Scorpio destroys any altruistic tenancies, turning the amiability of Venus into a grosser sensuality.

Now the influence of Venus, with it's internal corruption, is an act of violence in water signs, and becomes intense physical passion which unless gratified, will become hatred, such as one who ejaculates on a statue, hoping to make it live. When this doesn't happen the Dream isn't blamed, instead it is the object of one's ignorantly direct passion that is at fault. However, even when such intense physical passion is reciprocated, it will be stormy to the extreme. It may also end in tragedies and treacheries.
Such extreme violence of feelings, may also end in poor health, since no matter the physical strength of the person, the emotional strength of desires are even stronger and may eventually lead to dangerous excess. Therefore, Debauchery is an appropriate title for the Seven of Cups.

The number 7 refers to Netzach (Victory) and is the number of the Goddess (Water). Venus is the Goddess of Love, redoubling the influence of the number 7. As most of us know by experience, when Loving desire goes into physical overload, excessive passion becomes dangerous excess, from which some never recover. In the Human case, Passion must belong to the Higher States of Conscious rather than physical bodies as is explained by the very word Human; the word Human means God-Mind (Hu=Mandarin for God. Man=Hindu, Manas, for Mind) and the High Vibration Desires of such a psyche, burn away the flesh, unless the flesh's personality is trained, in the tempering heat of Qabalistic, Tantric, or Gnostic training. The Passion that Created a Universe of Self, is too much for a self-absorbed brain, whose universe is all about "my feelings"!

On the Thoth Tarot Card, to carry forth this idea of excess, the poisoned lotuses have become tiger lilies and the cups are iridescent,(dissolving in the Force), and are arranged into two descending triangles, interlaced with the larger lower cup-showing a greater lower influence on the emotions, as it floats in a slime covered morass of putrefaction. This card is almost a "evil reverse" image of the Six in the reflective world of matter; Zealotry, fanaticism are such evils.

The Seven of Cups, is a  wholesome reminder of the fatal ease with which a Sacrament, such as the "Flesh", may be profaned and prostituted simply by losing ones balance with Kether (Higher Mind), and straying ever so slightly from the middle pillar (Balance of Masculine and Feminine), thereby making the "holiest mysteries of Nature become the obscene and shameful secrets of a guilt ridden consciousness".

"Do unto others as you would have done to yourself", is the place for such creative passion, for that is the knowledge of the Higher Brain called Hu (Mandarin for "God") Man (Hindu-Manas-for mind), the Human brain, which resides on top of the Mammalian brain, which in turn, rides on top of the Reptile Brain, and  is the only one that can bring Holiness, to our ternary (compose of 3 parts)  brained physical Self. The "fleshy body" is a Sacramental Temple of DNA given to the animal, when the "Angels fell from Heaven to the Earth" and our personality should reside there, in the higher human brain, rather than in the lower brain of the reptile. Sadly, for the mundane, this isn't so.

When the 7of Cups-Debauch or Dream,  is thrown:
  • Emotional over extension
  • The querent is being caution about the apparent Victory of Denial.
  • There is a suggestion of deceit, promises unfulfilled, illusion, and error.
  • Slight success may be experienced, a minor victory so to speak, but not enough energy to retain it.
  • The querent maybe experiencing drunkenness, wrath, vanity. lust and promiscuity or even violence against women; a violence which is not limited to the male sex.
  • This card bespeaks of selfish dissipation.
  • Deception in love and friendship.
  • Let it be said, this is a card of passions run afoul because of too much fantasy and denial.
  •  A state of depression where one tries to ease the pain by overindulgence.
  • The imagination running away with itself and the resulting patterns are depleting the persons energy.
  • This is the place of Dreams, so it could be the ability to conjure up visions, fantasies, but the vision is watery, making it difficult to see reality.
  • There is a implication of true talent and insight, but tending towards fantasy, illusion and unrealistic attitudes. The surrounding cards will support this latter  interpretation.
  • Has or will experience for the next 7 weeks or 7monts, lying, deceit, promises unfulfilled, illusion, and deception, either by self denial or by others.
  • There may be slight success but there is not enough energy to maintain it so error develops.
  • Possible victory, but that is neutralized by the  supineness of  the person.
  • Drunkenness, wrath, vanity, lust, fornication for the sake of ego; violence against women.
  • Selfish dissipation.
  • Deception in love and friendship.
  •  Some success gained, but not followed up on.
  • All of which is modified by the dignity of the Card as determined by the accompanying cards.
  • This card is a warning that the sacrament of pleasure is being perverted by the survival mind and has made pleasure a egocentric need/delusion rather than a spiritual awareness.
  • Time to Know Thyself as a Spiritual Entity who owns a physical body and is in command of the senses rather than wallowing in them as a emotionally stagnant identity.
  • This is a warning that must be heard and understood if we are ever to expand and liberate our bodies mental-emotional function from animal survival reality, a fantasy for none survive life and to install the Real of Spirit as conscious energy-in-Motion.
  • Remember to seek anything is to deny you have it! I Am Love, states your true-self but ."I am looking for love". States only your lack of Self Awareness----and keeps the Love that you are from yourself!
  •  This card says, "Remember, we are the Will and the Way of our energy-in-motion! That's called freedom of choice, and we are not free to choose today's motion when our identity is stagnant in the delusion of our past egocentric dreams".
  • Take this "false success" card to heart---it is a warning that if understood, releases you to move ahead and out of the swamp of "self-absorption".
