Tarot Card Comparisons: The Thoth Tarot-Queen of Disks & The Barbara Walker Tarot-Queen of Pentacles: ERDA

The Tarot of EliThe Thoth Tarot- QUEEN OF DISKS & The Barbara Walker Tarot-Queen of Pentacles: ERDA.

Archetype Personality;
Generous, fertile, opulent, compassionate, comfortable, supporting, Mastery of Reflection and nurturing.

In the zodiac, The Queen of Disks rules from 21 degrees Sagittarius to 20 degrees Capricorn ( the symbol of the goat on the Thoth card).

This represents the function of Earth as Mother. Everything about her is abundant; affection, passivity, kindness, generosity, sensibility and practicality.

The illustrated card shows a Teutonic like image representing the Goddess Erda who was primary Muse and  universal life giver to many primitive cultures in Europe.

As a persona (from the Latin Personae, which means Mask) the Queen of disks (Pentacles on traditional tarot decks) represents a mature, dark woman who is practical and able to make specific forms  out of potential substance. In other words, she is able to both nourish and define. She is the physical nutritionist. We must also remember that a personality is but a mask over the face of our Soul. Which another Thoth Queen, Queen of Swords, points out as she holds a mask in her left hand.

Esoterically for the querent of a tarot reading, the Queen of Disks, suggests a high level of compassion, loving and nurturing the earth, and rejoicing in life.  This card also suggests a gift from a rich relative and since it is a Threshold for birth ( giving substance to dreams) the Queen of Disks can also represent a happy marriage for a young man.

The Queen of Disks, is a personality grounded in mothering and the earth. She shows great harmony with the Physical World  and health. This is a Wise Woman of Earth, who is very intelligent when it comes to physical things but can have difficulty arising above the material world.

There is great Hermetic symbolism to the Thoth card:
  1. The dual meaning of the Serpentine Horns on her helm that represent the Horns of Hathor (Egyptian Earth Goddess whose symbol was the cow) and the Life force of Earth.
  2. The Capricorn goat.
  3. The Crystal headed staff of Life (Crystallized light is what earth material is).
  4. The Reptile Patterned Dress that symbolizes regeneration force (serpents shed their old skin to become new).
  5. The Pineapple Throne of Earthly Wisdom and nutrition.

For the Qaballist, the Queen of Disks, is Water of Earth, (Unconsciousness of Earth) Specific Water in the World of Primal Earth. She holds a symbol of her ruler-ship over earth, the  six sided solid (cubed crystal) that refers to the Altar of the Mysteries. The Mysteries, include the Gnosis of many studies, from that of Alchemy, Qabalah, Tantra, Theosophy, Rosicrucian, Theology, philosophy, The Emerald tablets, etc.

The Thoth Tarot-Queen of Disks and the Barbara Walker Tarot-Queen of Pentacles, represent the Organic Living Organism of Earth. Gaea, or Erda, to some, Mother Nature to others. She is the Water/Blood Of Earth. The Thoth Card shows her with the globe in her hand, for she builds worlds with diet and nutrition.

The reptilian gown represents her  capacity to regenerate her body (organic living organism) through diet and nutrition. The pineapple throne she is siting on, represents the new fruitful worlds that she creates from past barren deserts.
With the clarity of her crystal wand, she established nutrition in all financial, health, work related areas and relationships.

With the practicality of the Capricorn goat and Aries the Ram ( her crown), the Queen of Disks establishes stable diets for herself in all areas of her life. She also represents,  Erda, the Teutonic goddess, who was worshiped by all primitive peoples as the universal life-giver and primary muse. Erda, is being honored on the Barbara Walker Tarot-Queen of Pentacles. Mother Earth, is named after the Teutonic Goddess- Erda, and according to the Kogi or Kagaba Indians, she is: "The Mother of Songs, the Mother of our whole seed, bore us in the beginning. She is a Mother of all races of man and the Mother of all tribes. She is the Mother of the thunder, Mother of rivers, the Mother of trees and of all kinds of things. She is the Mother of songs and dances...the only Mother we have." [Neumann, G.M., 85]

The Kogi (also known as the Kagaba) Indians, live in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta region at the northern tip of Colombia, in the mountains bordering the Caribbean Sea.

On the Barbara Walker Tarot Card, the oldest known stone age artifact-  figurine of the "Fat Venus" is depicted. These ancient sacred figurines were found form Siberia to the Pyrenees,  along with many old matriarchal religions and societies this image goes along way in proving that the Mother was the only supreme deity known to European people for many thousands of years.

As stated before, The Qabalistic Mother- Binah, the 3rd Sephiroth (sphere), is the "Will to Form" and is a force of understanding, that is imposed on the Pure Fiery Energy of Chokmah- "Will to Force".

The Qabalah's Mother Binah is named in English as Understanding, for an idea, once understood, can be molded into manifestation.
Again, these are not Persons, but States of Conscious Energy, called "Beings" (Archetypes) that are parts of the Divine Collective Unconscious, meaning the deep Imagination of The Tetragrammaton (YHWH), "All That Is", where images are formed and words won't explain.  Images are the only way to realize these deep inner layers of Mind, therefore justifying the Tarot. It behooves us to remember, that before individual copies of mind, The One Mind is a collective that forms "self images" as all things. This One Mind is represented as the Image of the Tree of Life.

To reiterate: Binah is the 3rd Sephiroth on the Tree of Life, in the upper part called the Supernal Triangle, She is the essence of Womb, and I often call this state of Mind a "Womb with a View", because She conceives by Understanding.
The Queens all represent the Water/Consciousness in each suit; water representing Consciousness. They are enthroned in the Element of Consciousness and make it bring forth the Force of the King, by realization and understanding that develops that force. As consciousness does to idea.
The Queen of Disks, often called the Queen of Pentacles, is also Queen of the Thrones of Earth; Queen of the Gnomes. She is Eorth, Ertha, Edda, Hertha, Hretha, Nertha, Urth, Urd, Wurd, Wyrd, or Weird, in various areas of Europe.

Astrological attribution is last Decan of Sagittarius and the first two Decans of Capricorn.
The Queen of Disks is Water of Earth, a specific consciousness in the Primal Earth element. Most of us call her "Mother Nature" and/or "Spider Woman".

In the art of the Thoth Tarot: Her ruler-ship over earth is shown in the crystal cubed scepter that has within it a three sided Hexagram. Her zodiacal attribute to Capricorn is shown by the image of the Goat.

Her Throne is vegetation as she is the life of such.  She is the Highest Aspect of passivity and this is shown as a winding passive river flowing through and fertilizing waste land.  The Great Work is ultimately expressed in fertility, where the "As a Above manifests in the Below'. She as Queen,  is the facilitator of such manifestation.

The Disk on her left arm is curved with loops and spheres interlaced, representing the ambition of matter to take part in the Great Work. This ambition is often described as Fecund motion. This is also shown by the Spiral Horns on Her helmet/crown, as Spiral force is both Spirit and Vital Life Force.

The reptilian patterned armor of the Thoth Queen represents the regenerative force in nature, as serpents shed their skin to become more. She represents the Watery part of Earth (consciousness) and the function of that element as Mother Nature. She is also "Grandmother River" to certain Native Nations.

As stated: In the Zodiac She rules from the 21st degree of Sagittarius to the 20th degree of Capricorn and represents the Highest aspect of Passivity/or Magnetic Force in Repose. As a psycho- physical union (Psychosomatic), we may notice that just by sitting by a calmly flowing river, we can feel inner peace flowing through our desert landscape of worry and fear. We become re-balanced and centered again by the Magnetic Flow of the Great Mother. This is the very essence of our Form and brings back the feeling of paradise that form gives Spirit.  Grand- Mother River is a great Lover of Being! She is the river of Psychic-Magnetism, that forms all light into beings. The waste land in which the "Fat Venus" towers over, is how Barbara Walker depicts this very aspect of a waste land of worry and fear, that she turns into a paradise of fertility. she has placed the Pentacle, over the Uterine cave .

There is a lot to interpret on this Thoth Tarot Court Card, as she is enthroned on vegetation (magnetic force in repose-- is "Form") and is looking at a river flowing in the background (Her other name) bringing life to the sandy desert. Oasis are springing up along the River's winding path.

The Goat standing on a sphere, refers to the dogma of the Great Work as fertility (The expansion and liberation of life.) The Helmet she wears is of coins and/or disks, and upon it are the Great Spiral Horns of the Markhor. Her staff is topped by a Crystal Cube (Three dimensional Hexagram)  and in her left curved arm and hand, is the Spiral decorated Disk/shield. Everything in creation is a spiral creation better known a "circles upon circles". All this represents the Ambition of matter to participate in The Great Work and/or Creation.

The Archetype personality (and person) symbolized by this card is endowed with:
  • The quiet and serene qualities of power.
  • Regenerating health.
  • They are indeed ambitious, as water is ambitious which is to say they calmly go about their work.
  • They have immense wealth of affection, kindness, and greatness of heart.
  • They are not usually intellectual, but instinct and intuition serve their needs just fine.
  • Having the qualities of being, hard working, practical, quite, domesticated they are also unassumingly lustful even to the point of "kinkiness" as they revel in the sensual fertility of their demeanor.  However, this can lead to the Bacchanalian abuse of alcohol and even drugs finding them useful  in getting outside themselves and/or the mental servitude of their cultural minds, into the Happy frivolity of surrounding Nature.
  • A personality grounded in the physical world, in harmony with Mother Nature.
  • Also the querent may be involved with important people who are Aries or Capricorn who can present new opportunities that inspire new focus on dietary and financial health or any aspects of their life.
  • The Queen of Disks, states that you are pioneering (Aries) new ways  that are nurturing  and stabilizing (Capricorn). Practical beauty, health, and fulfillment are easily established in this persons life.
When this card is Ill Dignified:
  • This personality type can be dull, servile, foolish drudges rather than workers.
  •  Life for them is purely robotic and they can't seem to rise above their appointed lot.
The general advice of this card:
  • Is to go forward quietly without overt attacks upon existing situations, i.e. go with the quiet natural flow of your personality in all situations.
  • A shedding of poor eating habits for those of  a new diet.
  • A shedding of old habits, or even the purchasing of new clothes.
  • The querent does all things she can do , well and it will be fruitful
  • One of a high level of compassion, nurturing abilities. loving physical life and all it has to offer.
  • One who is exceptionally procreative and nurturing in the nature of Mothering.
  • Power of practical wisdom on the physical level and in the inner world ,, applied spiritual wisdom .
  • A dark woman of great heart and serious cast of intelligence.
  • Opulence
  • Generosity
  • Also implies presents from a rich relative or a rich and happy marriage for a young man.
  • Erda, the Teutonic Mother Earth seen as a warm an nurturing deity.
