Tarot Card Comparisons: Thoth Tarot- 6 of Swords: Science & The Night Sun Tarot-6 of Swords

The Tarot of EliThe Thoth Tarot 6 of Swords-Science & The Night Sun Tarot-6 of Swords, refers not only to Tiphareth (Beauty), the 6th Sephira on the Tree of Life, but also to the intellect itself. Tiphareth/Beauty, is a harmony, often called love, involving Spirit, mind and body and is known in esoteric circles as the "Christ or Buddha Consciousness". Hence, Tiphareth/Beauty is the highest state of Consciousness the human brain can receive and therefore express. Therefore, the 6 of Swords is the fully established and balanced expression of the Suit of Air/Swords.

This synchronicity is also shown by the Planet Mercury being in the sign of Aquarius which represents the flow of  celestial Energy that operates the Idea of Humankind, i.e. the concept of humankind as the I-mage of God. Both Planet symbols and astrological signs are displayed on both cards.
To some, the word Science implies, plodding mathematics, mind numbing repetition and burrowing into dusty old books, but there is much more implied in the 6 of Swords. This is the ultimate declarative Science ( I AM) of  balancing the moral and mental faculties, that is difficult to achieve, and almost impossible to hold, in an ever-changing world of definition manipulation. Therefore, the 6 of Swords implies the perfect function of equilibrium between the psyche and soma. For those who need a refresher on the meaning of the words *Psyche and **Soma:

In psychology, the psyche /ˈsaɪki/ is the totality of the human mind, conscious and unconscious. Psychology is the scientific or objective study of the psyche. The word has a long history of use in psychology and philosophy, dating back to ancient times, and represents one of the fundamental concepts for understanding human nature from a scientific point of view.
Psyche (psychology) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

  1. biology: the parts of an organism other than the reproductive cells.
    • the body as distinct from the soul, mind, or psyche.
ORIGIN late 19th cent.: from Greek sōma ‘body.’

ORIGIN Sanskrit sōma.

In The Thoth Deck 6 of Swords, the hilts of the swords are not only ornamental but they also form the Hexagram. of the combined Triangles of the "As above, so below" doctrine of Qabalah. There is much to this science of the psychosomatic organism, so much so, that in this blog it can only be best explained in Understanding the Collective Consciousness represented as the entire 78 cards of Tarot. However, it can be said that the 6 of Swords represents "Mind over Matter", the perfected psychosomatic relationship of unconsciousness, consciousness and body.

As quote from the Qabalistic Tarot, by Robert Wang,"To deal with the mysteries of Tiphareth, one must first have undergone the initiations of Earth, Air, Water, and Fire (Malkuth, Yesod, Hod and Netzach, respectively).  No matter how a religious or esoteric cult, whether Christianity, Buddhism or Qabalah, may describe the various component parts of the Personality, or the initiation of the four lower Sephiroth, an integration must be undergone before the descent of the Light which is God the Son. This integration is a personal atonement for the Fall. In Tiphareth is the Redemption."

The  Fall, which is often misunderstood, simply means the progressive sojourn down the Tree of Life, necessary to establish a "point in time", (In physics, a point in time is called an entity) and/or  the human body.  We are Spirit, who is "everywhere and nowhere at the same time", (infinite - I AM ) so in order to become "Self Aware" we need a place in time; a moment of sensuality, for the purpose of Self examination. There is no "Me" without sensation! This is called the "fall", when we build a "Me" we "fall" from the impersonal immortality of the I AM and become a personal mortal/sensual experience of the microcosm as a "Self", i.e. I Am Me.

To know that human kind is the initiator of the Elementals is a Magi's knowledge and requires the "Science of Tiphareth", who is King over the four Elemental aspects that are the Personality (thus the cross symbol which also serves as the "human form") and the Palace of the rulers of the actual Elemental Kingdoms of Earth, Air, Water and Fire. These Rulers are called the Malachim elementals who are kings/queens over other elementals because they have gained immortality which occurs only from the intervention of the Psyche of human beings. When we realize ourselves as Tiphareth, we become the Elohim Malachim "Gods of the gods".  As you may note,  there is much to this Science of Tiphareth. However, one must note, that if one is not the Real Persona, that is the Soul/Psyche, but rather an environmentally -man-made personality, they have no power over their own entity, let alone the elements.

To continue with the examination of the Thoth card, the 6  Swords  have their points joined in the Rose upon the six squares of the Rosy Cross. Thus, the Rosy cross is the central point of this Science.

The number 6 is the number of the Sun and the Rose is the Womb of the Great Mother. The Son (Sun) of the Father joined in the womb of the Mother, is an intelligent state of Energy that requires diligent study and vigilant self awareness. Have fun deciphering this Sephira, for it is a harmonic Magic !

The Thoth 6 of Swords-Science illustrates the Balance of the idea of the Suit. Tiphareth, the Middle-6th Sephiroth on the Middle Pillar of the Tree of Life, is the Sun/son of God Sephiroth, known as Beauty; Beauty being the perfect balance of opposites, or as psychologist/philosopher-Carl Jung would say, "...a Synchronicity".

The  Higher Intellect itself is also referred to in the number 6 , as it is the number of the Sun, which represents the Bright-Warm Intelligence.

In the zodiac, this card is influenced by Mercury in Aquarius, which represents the celestial Energy Intelligence of the Universal Collective Unconscious influencing the Soul of Man. Thus, the Six of Swords-Science, shows both intelligence and humanity and represents the "heart Chakra" (Soul center) energy center of the Human form.

However, there is much more to be seen in this symbol, as it is about a state of all mental and moral facilities hardly won and almost impossible to hold in an ever-changing world.
When we look at the 6 of Swords-Science, we see that the ornate sword-hilts form an Hexagram ( a symbol of the linking of "the above and the below"), symbolizing the perfected balance of all the harmonics of planetary influences.

As previously stated: Illustrated on the Thoth card,  the Points of the Six Swords touch each other in the Center of a red rose on a golden cross of six squares. The red is hard to see on the card illustration as it has faded due to processing. The Golden cross, the Red Rose and the six squares show the Rosy Cross as the central secret of scientific truth.

The Student of Gnosis ( Greek for Knowledge, but not the knowledge we make but rather the Knowledge that makes us.) would be wise to study the Rosy Cross and/or Rosicrucian philosophy, just to add another perspective of Self.
The Night Sun Tarot-6 of Swords, seems to be about the science of back-packing. Here the vulture masked persona, is carrying a load of 6 swords, and 4 casks, in a balanced precision.  Swords are the symbols for the element of air, which is the "rational mind" and/or mind of ratiocination. The Casks are vessels, such as the mind is a vessel for thoughts/ideas. To me, this implies the personal balance of the Conscious and unconscious.

The back ground is the yellow color assigned to the element air. The yellow background is filled with the symbols of sacred geometry. The 6 petaled soul image is part of this geometry. Together, the symbology seems to imply perfected psychosomatic mechanics.

When the Six of Swords is thrown during a reading it indicates:

  •  That in six weeks or six months, the querent shall have experienced or will experience: Labor, work, and even a journey probably over water because of the Aquarius influence.
  • Success after anxiety and trouble.
  • Selfishness, beauty, conceit, but sometimes modesty within all depending on dignity which is supplied by the surrounding cards.
  • So what this card means is that the querent should use the whole mind (The Circle in the Card) to observe the situations of the next 6 weeks or 6 month, and look at what is really there rather than what we want to see.
  • Being able to see many thoughts at once, is represented by the pinwheels throughout the Card and being discerning is shown by the Whole mind (circle) and the Creative Mind ( Diamond) working in unison to solve problems by constructive and creative means.
  • They shall experience success after anxiety and effort.
  • The personality of the querent is, somewhat conceited but sometimes with modesty therein, modifying the selfishness with beauty. To understand this statement, is to know that all of us are "Selfish" ( you can't make an individual expression of Self without being "Selfish"); However, by balancing this self-absorption, with the Science of Union (the Rosy Cross) where it is understood that, "everyone I see is another way to be me" and/or the law of  continuity, we make "Selfishness" beautiful.
