The Thoth Tarot- 8 of Swords is called Interference, while the Witches Tarot illustrates a young woman standing in a circle of eight swords plunged into the ground, in an effort to restrict her movements.
The color that is used to identify the element of Air, is yellow and is shown as the golden hilts of the swords. Hence, air is blowing about the clothing and bling fold of the woman.
She seems defeated, as she is unmoving, in the loose circle of swords, that she could easily exit. Behind her is a river and castle shrouded in mist.
Rivers are traditionally used to imply emotions streaming by. The Castle in the mist represents goals that seem hard to realize.
In the foreground are blooming nightshade flowers. In the language of plants, nightshade means false dark thoughts. Therefore, the implications of this card seems to be that she is bound in her own dark and gloomy thoughts and is emotionally unable to move on. Hence
the Primary meaning of the Witches Tarot Eight of Swords, seems to be about a withdrawn personality whose lack of confidence produces a feeling of self-imprisonment.
is also called The Lord of Shortened Force. This card is attributed to Jupiter in Gemini. Jupiter's natural expansiveness is in detriment in Gemini, as the duality of Gemini affects Jupiter's positive energy, scattering half one way and half the other.
Here, Hod, the 8th Sephiroth-Splendor, is in Yetzirah, the Astral World.
The angels of the Decan are, Vemibael and Yehohel.
Because of the desire to go one way than the other, the shortened forces of Jupiter are scattered, erratic and unstable. This is indeed an interference when trying to focus one's consciousness on a goal. Yes it can certainly be an intense and positive beginning, but it soon loses momentum in misdirection.
Crowley illustrates this in his 8 of Swords, as two strong and long main swords (consciousness and unconsciousness), being crossed ( as in Crossed-up) by six short swords of different designs (scattered thoughts). The shorter swords also imply, shortened force, narrowness and restriction. There is a definite lack of persistence in intellectual matters and of contest. Jupiter's natural good fortune still attends even the weakest of efforts, yet the will is constantly thwarted by accidental interference. Here the consciousness and unconsciousness communication is interfered with and confused by "nagging thoughts".
Therefore, the Eight of Swords also implies a certain amount of fear of change, of moving out of a binding or restricting situation. The Positive side of this is that change, no matter how resisted, will soon come anyway. The Good Fortune of Jupiter, will show up, albeit a stunted good fortune. What is again implied, is stop wasting time and proceed with change, your scattered efforts will not stop it, only interfere with your wholesome transition.
